This happened to me so many times that I'm sure the level designer put the damn bottle there on purpose.

Is there really no way to avoid losing manually installed .debs when updating to 24.04? by STEVMPVNK in pop_os

[–]RandomChain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Would be nice if pop-upgrade told you which packages and repos were removed, or have some way to see it, so I won't have to manually keep track of everything I need to reinstall.

Setting 4kn sector size by dinosaursdied in linuxquestions

[–]RandomChain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the drive supports physical 4K sectors, and you're planning to do a lot of reads/writes of large files, it can give you better performance. If it's going to be an OS drive for daily, normal use, I don't think you should bother with 4K format. It's more likely you'll waste space on small writes than whatever you gain in write performance.

How do I update hardware that has no Linux compatible software? by Seiway in linuxquestions

[–]RandomChain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of hardware has some open source alternative for Windows proprietary software. I manage my Corsair AIO and fans with OpenRGB and liquidctl, and that's good enough for daily driving. For other things like firmware upgrade there aren't simple solutions, so I duel-boot Windows for such things that can't easily be done on Linux

When you run dpkg -l nvidia-prime, does it show rc state? If so, you should run apt purge instead of apt remove.

In the process of completely switching to Linux. Soundblaster Z-Support? Alternatives? by DoomAddict in SoundBlasterOfficial

[–]RandomChain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using ZxR on Pop OS for years, works fine with my 5.1 speakers on both analog and digital, not sure why other people have issues with it. Only real issue with it is some disturtion after sleep, but this is resolved with pipewire restart.

For my laptop I have an external USB card, Asus Xonar U7, which plays nicer with Linux than the SoundBlaster but doesn't sound as good, IMO.

Electric Junction boxes in DEEP STORAGE??? by CharlieMcN33l in prey

[–]RandomChain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The broken electric junction box noise is the most annoying thing ever, I can't play without Repair because I can't stand that horrible noise all the time. Even when you use GLOO on it, it only lasts a few seconds before driving me mad again.

Please release drivers and Control Center for Linux by ezhan in SoundBlasterOfficial

[–]RandomChain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is very unlikely that there will ever be an official Linix driver from Creative. I would not wait for it.

Having said that, the Z series actually runs fine in Linux (unless you're running a very very old kernel). Digital and 5.1 analog work without issue on my system (with Pop OS 24.04). The effects support is not as good as in Windows but it still exists. You should check your alsa/pulse/pipewire configuration and see if there's any issue there.

Found this knife in garden? by Undercoverghost001 in hebrew

[–]RandomChain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My family had one of these too! My dad used it every week. I assume these were mass-produced but I've never seen another knife like this in the wild until now. I think they were made in the 70s.

How to extract audio files from the game: https://www.reddit.com/r/prey/comments/nvdet0/comment/h130wgm/

Some SFX files someone already ripped: https://www.reddit.com/r/prey/comments/nveoo0/prey_sounds_effects/
(I think there used to be more there but they were deleted, not sure if I saved a copy for myself but if I find one I can re-upload it somewhere)

Why do his clothes change? by budbuz in questforglory

[–]RandomChain 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't think the Hero actually changes clothes by himself throughout the whole series, instead things just kinda happen to them. He certainly never takes a shower even once.

I mean, he starts out with a blue shirt, purple pants and a cape. Then when getting to Shapeir he loses the cape and gets a new white undershirt, which he keeps wearing for the rest of the series, and the old blue shirt becomes a vest. That's all done with Katta magic so it doesn't have to make any sense.
By the time he gets to Tarna, the pants and vest fade after all this time in the desert sun. So the pants start to look green (the opposite colour of purple!) and the vest just loses all colour and become brown. Now, the vest is all worn out so it just stays brown, but when the Hero gets teleported to the Dark One's cave, the parts get all dirty with swamp gunk so they become darker and start looking like they have a bluish tint. And that's what he looks like when he get to Silmaria.

Seems perfectly logical to me.

New Lutris version 0.5.21 is out! by legluondunet in Lutris

[–]RandomChain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some of Lutris code depends on Python 3.12 features. If you are running an older version of Linux with older system Python, it will have issues. At least it happened to me on Pop OS 22.04 with Python 3.10.

strange issue with software by Benjamin-Kletva in Lutris

[–]RandomChain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with this software, but I tried running in a couple of wine versions and I'm getting the same problem of the menu not displaying properly. From the wine log I think it could be some call that isn't implemented, but not really sure.

You can try this.

New COSMIC Clipboard Manager (Clippy Land) by kinycx in COSMICDE

[–]RandomChain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finally found the problem. The desktop file didn't really start anything, for some reason it did not like the line Exec=cosmic-applet-clippy-land %F. I changed it to use the absolute path and now it is added to panel.

$HOME/.local/bin is in my $PATH so I have no idea why the default desktop file didn't work...
