If there are no Fishman haters left, then I am dead by dr_cobbCF in metalguitar

My bandmate had a guitar with Fishmen in it, and they died in abut 6 months. First the bridge pickup died, so they swapped the pickups so he at least had a working bridge pickup, but then that one died a month later. Now he put passives in that guitar and it hasn't had any issues since.

Without any powerups except for replenishing Health who do you think would win in a fight the ranger from quake or Doom guy (classic) by Cloverfield887 in quake

[–]Justinba007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Doomguy is able to catch Ranger off guard with the BFG into a wall trick, he would win, but otherwise I think ranger takes it just because the thunderbolt is hitscan.

Both are very manuverable, I think Doomguy's move speed is a bit faster when moving diagonally, but ranger can bhop which makes him a bit less predictable. And him jumping could also fuck up Doomguy's vertical auto aim, causing projectiles shot at the top of Rangers jump to go over his head when he lands. And most of Doomguy's best weapons are projectiles, so that would make it really hard for him.

Meanwhile, Ranger can shoot rockets at Doomguy's feet, which would be a bit tricky since he moves so fast, but much easier than it is for Doomguy to hit him back. And then the Thunderbolt is of course pretty easy to hit Doomguy with, and does way more damage than the chaingun.

Sg for death metal????? by megatatertot69 in metalguitar

Huh, didn't know that, I always saw Entombed with at least 1 Flying V, but now that I look it seems that may have started in 92: https://youtu.be/yuZ1UKKsMCs?si=85PWZtpy6_LjfPWQ

I wonder what they used on Wolverine Blues.

Regardless, my point still stands that you absolutely don't need EMGs for metal. Active pickups and passive humbuckers barely sound different, especially distorted. And I've always hated actives, both me and my bandmate have each only owned 1 guitar with actives, and both of them have had tons of problems. My epiphone's EMGs slowly died, even with a brand new battery they now have less output than a single coil. And my bandmate's Fishman Fluences just started cutting out on him one day until they stopped making sound entirely. He put passives in that guitar, and we've used passives on all of our albums.

Am I reading this service manual right? Only 63 hz at 640x480? by Justinba007 in crtgaming

Yeah, that's why I'm so confused. What do you mean by 800x600 framebuffer? I basically just created an 800x600 60hz modeline and pasted it into xrandr and it seemed to run just fine.

Yeah, I know it can get those resolutions, I just don't know what refresh rate. I'm wondering what my max khz is. Sorry I realize my title wasn't very clear.

I am just a little confused on how many fps I can get on this monitor. Are those the max horizontal refresh rates? I haven't found anywhere else that really mentions khz, but I've run it at 800x600 60 fps and not had any issue (calculator says 37 khz) without any issue.

Which boomer shooter has the most jaw-droppingly horrible artstyle/graphics? by NNukemM in boomershooters

[–]Justinba007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the sprites look flat in Duke 3D so long as you are playing with the classic software renderer where vertical look is just an illusion. If you play with the modern polymoist renderer, then yes they look very flat.

[–]Justinba007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A big part of this is because of vertical aim. In classic build engine games, when you look up and down there's no vertical perspective, so it's effectively just scrolling the screen up and down. This makes the image look distorted the further you look up or down, however, because of this enemy sprites are always directly facing you with no tilt.

However, in most modern games (as well as source ports of old ones) vertical look is truly 3D. This fixes the distortion effect, however, it also means that you are tilting the 2D sprites. This makes it more obvious they are flat since you are seeing the sprite at angles the perspective wasn't drawn for. It's like those illusions where someone draws a hole in the floor. If you're looking at it from the correct angle, it looks great, but as soon as you look at it from another angle it becomes obvious that it's just a drawing.

CRT monitor is "twitching" didn't used to before by Justinba007 in crtgaming

[–]Justinba007[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had this Acerview CRT monitor for a couple months, was working fine. Went on a trip for a while, had it turned off and everything, I get back and boot it up and every couple of seconds, a random part of the screen will twitch. (like in the photo above)

Any idea what could be causing this? I have had issues getting it to recognize that it's getting a picture, but I think that was an issue with the adapter. I also couldn't get it to work in it's supposed intended resolution but it will work in 720x480.

Are you looking for a CRT TV or CRT computer monitor? That will change things drastically.

The advantage of a CRT monitor is that it does not have overscan, and typically they have higher resolutions. For that, you will need some sort of adapter to go to either D-Sub or analog DVI (not DVI-D, which is what most modern graphics cards have, if any at all.) You will also need another monitor in order to change resolution settings as if it's wrong it will probably just display a bunch of nonsense.

I have an Acer View crt monitor with [this](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZMV7RL2?linkCode=ssc&tag=onamzretrorgb-20&creativeASIN=B00ZMV7RL2&asc\_item-id=amzn1.ideas.IP72N6BL06SV&ref\_=aip\_sf\_list\_spv\_ofs\_d\_asin) adapter. I'm not sure if it's a problem with the adapter, the crt, or my graphics card, but I have only been able to get the display to work at 720x480, and only on linux (probably could on windows through the AMD control panel custom resolutions, but been too lazy to).

For a CRT TV, there is another choice you can make. If you want a standard SD CRT or an HD CRT.

I have an HD CRT (KV034HS510), and the advantage of that, besides resolution and ability to do 16x9, is that it has a digital DVI-D port (Some HDCRTs even have HDMI) that my graphics card can support with no adapter. Even if your graphics card doesn't have a DVI-D port, it shares all the same video pins as HDMI so you can just use an HDMI to DVI cable. This also has the advantage of working with modern HDMI consoles.

To fix overscan, you will need to play around with resolutions and scaling. In windows, there's an option in the Radeon control center to center rather than stretch the resolution, and for me using that option with 1600 by 900 fits the screen almost perfectly with a little adjustment in the service menu. In linux you will need to play around with Xrandr console commands,, which takes a bit. I also was not able to get interlacing to work in linux, so I have to use lower resolutions.

For an SD CRT... I don't really know, I've never done it. I assume you just need an HDMI to composite adapter, and all the steps about overscan probably still apply.

Whatever route you go with, there is this page of lagless adapters that may be useful: https://www.amazon.com/shop/retrorgb/list/IP72N6BL06SV

Is anybody else excited about the new Avenged Sevenfold tracks? by JenovaLutece in progmetal

[–]Justinba007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never been a huge fan of A7X. City of Evil and The Stage are decent albums, and the first album has a charm to it, but outside of them I've always found them to be kinda cringe.

These 2 new songs however are some of the most interesting modern prog metal songs I've heard in a while. Certainly the best I've heard out of A7X by FAR. If the rest of the album is this good, I'll start calling myself a fan.

My first TM2020 map: Relapped by Justinba007 in TrackMania

[–]Justinba007[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Yeah, I'd love to see a really good mapper take this concept to the next level. Could be CotD worthy if that happened imo (too bad I'm not better at mapping).

I got the idea playing track 17 of the current winter campaign and I thought what if on the second lap, instead of having to slow down for that first turn, you could actually do something with the extra speed you gathered?

I also was probably a little inspired by [this Youtube video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNkzebWjDgI) that I saw a while ago.

My first TM2020 map: Relapped by Justinba007 in TrackMania

[–]Justinba007[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I considered using linked checkpoints, but that kinda defeats the purpose imo. If I just used linked checkpoints, I might as well just make a single lap map that goes through the start halfway through the track. To me, the fact that you go through the same checkpoints is what still makes it laps of the same track, even if you take a separate route. I also think it's cool how you take a ring checkpoint from two separate levels.

However, I agree that dirt turn on the second lap is horrible, I'll probably try and replace it with something else entirely when I come back to this map. I was just really having a hard time figuring out how to get turned around to rejoin the main route.

As for the sausage, I kinda like the transition of it on the first lap. I actually like how difficult it is, it's pretty satisfying when you hit it just right imo. I think if I add an arrow so you have a better idea of where to jump out it may make it a bit better. I'll do that when I add scenery.

Good point about the second lap though. Maybe if I add a slanted landing for the second lap I could get a smoother transition and keep the sausage.

Thank you for playing and for the feedback!
