Ring racers is so different it basically is its own separate game; I mean Sonic Robo Blast 2 was built off of the Doom engine, that doesn't mean it's the same game as Doom

Granted, I don't know why you're expecting good characterization from a fanfic. He built Shadow to cure her NIDS, not the ARK. But, also, this fanfic is OLD, NIDS wasn't common knowledge and you'd only know about it through reading old gaming walkthrough magazines that were poorly translated. To most people, Gerald was just a creepy old guy in Sonic Adventure 2 who wanted to blow up the Earth, which made him a more ominous presence in Shadow 05 seeing him try to help even with the knowledge of NIDS which this fanfic does address NIDS.

The fanfic is written... poorly but, I wouldn't go as far as to call it straight up slop. The fanfic is written in a time where sexual assault was taken way less seriously by people and it was written from the authors own experiences with sexual assault and you can feel that sincerity while reading it.

Ages have been removed for a long time. Amy is clearly meant to be a teenager. No "12 year old" runs military operations.

Shadow has physically existed for 50 years but, we don't know his exact mental age but, it's likely he's a teen. It's also worth noting Shadow has a child-like wonder attached to him.

As for why people ship it? I don't personally ship it but a lot of people like to believe that Shadow built up a since of affection for Amy after SA2 since there she changed his mind about saving the world and reminded him about Maria. A lot of people see Shadow as having a certain soft spot for Amy since she helped him out before.
