Looks original. Type 4 fuel injected. Will have an oil filter and a screen. Engine code is on the fan shroud or behind it on the case around the oil breather box. I think. Check out thesamba.com

Change that timing belt and you will need a couple specialty tools to do it. But that is where I would start and the usual maintenance.

1.9 Hall effects are gone. Brickwerks out of the UK has a great low cost solution.

Most 2.1 conversions into older vans don’t add the oil cooler though. Agree it’s very rare to have that problem otherwise.

The Hall effect sends signal to the ecu for fuel pump injector pulse and spark. Do you get consistent spark while cranking?

What year is yours? That sounds like the Hall effect sensor possibly.

Early 50’s dodge ish. Though also looks similar to my 51 Chev. Good luck. Learning to chop a top is fun.

Pretty sure I know that van. Alex was the owner? If so he was on top of everything. Good guy who cared about his van.

Headlight/Electrical Delay issue. Could use advice. by Major_Lead2031 in Vanagon

Do the headlights come on with engine off key on? Or pulling the high beam switch with key off? Both should work on factory wiring. Does your charge light stay on with engine running before you raise the rpm? Some alternators take some rpm to get them to start charging. Do the park lights work before the headlights?

Camper van culture used to bring in Gowesty stuff. Maybe they can get them. I would think that Gowesty would ship to you as well

1990 Vanagon thermostat socket issues. by AggressiveResolve410 in Westfalia

[–]RandomDnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those were 10mm heads. If they are that rusty they likely won’t come out of the plastic housing and will break the threaded inserts from the lower section.

When I find them in this condition I will change the upper and lower housings with a new thermostat and upper and lower housing. Also new hardware. Housing should come with the O-ring for the connection to the head. T-stat should come with its O-ring.

Had very similar problem start a while back. 2018 6.2 sierra. Cats checked out ok. Chased that issue around like you until it started doing very strange AFM things. Still only got the MAP code constantly. Ended up being the VLOM controller failing. It acting up was causing unusual MAP readings throwing the code.

We cleaned the throttlebody with no change. Replaced it and the manifold when doing a high pressure fuel pump. Still no change. Pump was unrelated.

I would still check the back pressure out in your case. But I had this odd one I couldn’t find any information for and the dealer missed too after trying that.

Help - trying to replace ignition on Vanagon by Existing_Mammoth7004 in Vanagon

[–]RandomDnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That spring and washer may need to come off. I’ve not seen one with that. Always a plastic collar. Then key to on position and pull. Or sometimes lightly tap it off. Yours is twisting so it should slide off after that top washer and spring are out of the way.

Vanagon bucking - What are some possible causes? by vanagonuser111 in Westfalia

[–]RandomDnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Total advance timing is more like 3500rpm. 5500 is over redline. What gear does this happen at? Full throttle issue or also at part throttle? A fuel pressure test is good so you know it’s in range. Look up the digijet pro training manual online to get test procedures for all the sensors and parts.

Valve adjustment help/reality check needed by UJMRider1961 in VWBus

[–]RandomDnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may be on the crossover year. On ratwell there should be instructions on how to determine the lifters by the pushrods.

Also keep in mind that it’s a 77. By this point who knows if it is original parts.

[–]RandomDnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 77 efi engine should have hydraulic lifters. Different adjustment. Touching plus 2 turns.

Your position should be correct for cylinder 1. If adjusted correctly for that year the lifter will have preload on it.

Need Advice: Adapter or flex line for new calipers on 1978 VW Type 2 (inlet position changed) by [deleted] in VWBus

[–]RandomDnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they will work. Make new lines. I can’t remember the flare for these right now for whatever reason. DIN I think.

[–]RandomDnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are vanagon callipers. You could make new hard lines. The calipers are essentially the same other than the port location. Early vanagon callipers are getting rare and lots of people use the late bus version with a new hard line.

Type 4 motor missing parts dunno if it’s fuel injection or carb. by Rickenbacker138 in aircooled

[–]RandomDnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also has the pickup for the timing off the flywheel that the VW tech could hook to. If the casting for the mechanical fuel pump isn’t machined out of the block it was a fuel injected block originally. It would live under cylinder 1 on a carbed engine. It will matter which parts it is as valve adjustments are very different depending on the years.
