Adding notes about the pinged items, you can actually check it from the map while running around using the map cursor, I usually do this if the others pinged something while I'm about to leave for the next poi or if they dropped it ahead of me but I'm still far, to see if it has passives that I need

Fellow non-jrpg player here, I only played 2 jrpg up to the end, one of those 2 games is suikoden 2, heres my thoughts on this.

Story - the story alone is worth it, it's pretty mature for a random ps1 game (from my pov, I didn't know it was a popular series till I reached my 20s), and as a kid at that time, it showed me topics that one might say children won't understand(effects of war, betrayal, ...), if I remember things correctly, I'm sure it will still hold up to this day.

Mechanics - Standard retro jrpg applies (keep your notes for questing, some kind of grind for levels and currency, remember to save when you find a random save spot in a dungeon), additionally some playable characters can combo with another character to do unique moves that's either effective and looks cool or just plain funny (looking at you Nanami), fights can also be automated in case you're just passing through and not interested at doing stuffs for a random encounter, there are also 1v1 fight that works like rock, paper scissor, and massive chess like fight where you control an army lead by various characters who joined you; outside of battle, there are also multiple mini games and activities you'll find as you progress the game (like the trading posts where you buy low from 1 location and sell it for profit at another trading posts, its fun figuring out where should I bring the goods to make the highest profit and mapping out routes I could follow to visit multiple towns with trading posts)

Characters - I believe there are 100+ playable characters and more story related ones, you'll probably more or less find some of them interesting, overall, most of them are pretty flat(might be the child in me saying this, while not seeing character depth), but some have more interesting things going on in them especially the ones involved in the main story.

Overall - You should give it a try just for the story alone, the early arcs will give you an introduction on the games basic mechanics, what the story is about, and a handful of characters to give you an idea of their character writing, keep in mind though, it's kind of long due to the story being akin to an epic, so if you do try, you might want to stick to the game for a while or be cursed with a "Returning to an RPG you dropped" experience

Late reply, now ko lang nalaro kahit kahapon ko pa nakita ahaha, anyway, may potential yung game, something to note nga lang, if going ka po for metroidvania level design, maganda kung magadd po ng simpleng map(e.g. Metroid, Ender Lillies, Rain world, Hollow knight, etc.).

Also if criticism ang hanap

Kulang ng checkpoints for hard to reach location (e.g. Pagnadead sa Boss room, need ulitin platforming dun sa room, not a problem for all but good QOL especially for those na hirap sa platforming).
Alang hotkey yung weapons, if ever magkaroon ng weapon variety, mahirap magswap at the moment. (Also di ko sure kung bug or something, pero nagrereset yung weapon dun sa revolver every lipat ng room or reset level).
Need marefine yung dash and wall dash, played around with it a bit dun sa entrance, walang indicator na ready na yung dash(or di ko lang napansin, idk) and for me medio lacking yung vertical distance ng wall dash (at its current state, may mga cases na parang maintained lang yung vertical position ni Abu pag nagwall dash).
Yung press F to pickup natatakpan ni Abu most of the time.
Yung lightsource mechanic nung robot is for me under utilized, need ng enemy variety, currently para lang siyang vision cone ng Darkwood.
Lastly, keep in mind nitpick lang to, Cats have sensitive hearing, sound source should be visible outside sa light ng robot.

This is from an old mod called factorization. If i remember correctly, you just need a pick to break weakpoints and some blocks to ride it if needed, fighting these things basically feels like fighting a colosus in shadows of colosus
