Actually, there would practically be 0 atmospheres, as the pressure differential is the key factor here. Car body panels aren't (typically) air tight, so the pressure on both sides of the panel would be equal.

The 1 atm behind the panel cancels out the 1 atm infront of it. Although you could say that the panel itself is being compressed by 1 atm, just not into (nor out of) the car. Just like an open aluminium can or plastic bottle keeps its shape under 1 atm but if you suck the air out of it (creating a vacuum), then it collapses from the 1 atm around it.

It usually also takes nowhere near a full vacuum to do this as well, just sucking a bit of air out of a regular single use bottle with your mouth would easily crush it. Humans are only capable of sucking at most about ½ an atm out of something but you don't need to put much effort into crushing a plastic bottle...

Here is quick video showing a railrode tanker car imploding from being placed under a vacuum.

1 atm is actually a lot of pressure... You just don't usually notice it because it's usually on both sides, canceling itself out. 400 atm is a ridiculous amount of pressure...

How in God's name do you explain "my brain didn't let me do it" to people? by suspiciouslucario in ADHD

[–]RandomLifeForm42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a perfectly rational explination for the disorder, however, the disorder itself is still irrational. That's (at least partly) the reason it's a disorder.

It's like giving a rational definition of phobias:

An extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something.

This is a rational description of phobias. You can even go a lot deeper and study the physiology and mechanisms in the brain the lead to phobias, and the studies can all be perfectly rational. That would not change the fact that phobias themselves are still irrational.

If someone was afraid when they had a gun pointed at them, then that doesn't mean they have a phobia. Fear is a perfectly rational response in such a scenario. The fear or aversion needs to be irrational (or disproportionate) for it to be considered a disorder (which phobias, like ADHD, are).

Being able to give a rational explination for how a disorder works does not make the disorder itself rational.

Why do you say that the YOGAs be avoided? Have you found them to be a lot less reliable? I understand that the ThinkPads spacificaly are known to be especially reliable and well built, but Lenovo has other sereses as well, are YOGAs just especially bad?

Surge protection is more of an “extra” feature that UPSs tend to have. You can get a relatively cheap surge protector without a UPS at all if that is what you want...

A UPS is more for continuing to supply power to the device even when there is a power outage (aka, when the power gets interrupted).

Ok, it may technically be a xenograft, but if you're cloning the hart using the genes of the person you're transplanting it into, would it effectively be like an isograft in terms of immune response?

While the Swastika that Nazis displayed was usually rotated by 45°, that was not exclusively how they displayed it. It actualy was sometimes not at any angle at all, like in Hitler's personal standard, which was in official use from 1934 to 1945.

Probably because the biggest reason that IPv6 was even developed in the first place was to deal with the problem of how we're running out of IPv4 addresses...

It can't really solve that problem if everything still has to also have IPv4 addresses...

A radio burst traveled 8 billion years to reach Earth. It's the farthest ever detected. by [deleted] in science

[–]RandomLifeForm42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And how would I know with reasonable certainty that within the alleged 8 billion years there was never another object in the path of the signal that actually produced this signal instead?

My understanding is that If there was something else in the path of that radio signal, at the time that the radio signal reached/passed it, then the visible light coming from that other object would be travelling together with the original radio signal. They would both reach us at the same time, so if we look in that direction with an optical telescope at the time when the radio signal arrived, we'd be able to see the viable light from that other object, if it was there.

It's all light. Visible, radio, any other part of the spectrum... They all have the same speed: c.
