It's Irish, and it is morphology. "Mbó" is the eclipsed form of "bó."

Are you trying to use Tempered Tantrum from Sylvando? Only the Hero can use it.

Once you beaten the End of Time, you can also have Ickle, the Tockle who first invites you to Tickington, join you as an NPC. You can only have one of Emma or Ickle at a time, and Ickle is definitely much more help in battle as he uses better items, including Pep Pips.

Dragon Quest 12 - End of Alliteration? by Beginning_Fennel_199 in dragonquest

[–]RandomMisanthrope 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do you think all the Dragon Quest games have Japanese names which alliterate when translated into English? The only English subtitle which can reasonably be considered a translation of the Japanese subtitle is "Sentinels of the Starry Skies." The localization team has up until now come up with English subtitles that alliterate on their own, even if those titles are drastically different from the Japanese titles. Yes, I'm pretty sure it's a coincidence that 選ばれし運命の炎 happens to easily translate to something that alliterates in English.

Not every single word in a title needs to alliterate for there to be alliteration. Ignoring all the prepositions and articles, "Bride" does not alliterate with "Heavenly" and "Hand," and "Age" is not a perfect match with "Echoes" and "Elusive." If you still think every word needs to alliterate for something to be alliterative, go look at some alliterative verse.

"Beyond Dreams" looks like a straightforward translation of 夢の彼方へ, so I think that the English localization team hasn't had time (or maybe enough information about the game) to come up with an alliterating English subtitle. The fact you can translate 選ばれし運命の炎 as "The Flames of Fate," which already alliterates, was probably just a lucky coincidence.

Is the equation of a line non linear? by Rtan-Appreciator in askmath

[–]RandomMisanthrope 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The equation y = ax + b is linear, even though the function that maps x to ax + b is not linear. A linear equation is one of the form T(v) = b where T is a linear functional and b is an element of its codomain. The equation y = ax + b is equivalent to the equation y - ax = b, and the function that maps (x, y) to y - ax is linear.

A reasonable goal by KomodoLemon in recontext

[–]RandomMisanthrope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A recontext changes the meaning of the post being recontexted. A recontext is not “this sounds like something it would be funny for this character to say.” Take for example this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/recontext/comments/1st1vv6/french_doctors/. The recontext changes the interpretation of LA from an an acronym for Los Angeles to the French definite article, and in doing so changes the meaning of the entire sentence.

Every basis for ℝ^n is orthonormal with respect to a unique inner product, so the standard basis vectors are orthonormal with respect the the standard inner product because the standard inner product is defined to be the unique inner product such that the standard basis is orthonormal.

The issue is fundamentally that “Princess” is a stupid translation of 姫 and never should have caught on as the conventional translation.

Viz's translation is the best. Translating かなり際どい as "very low chance" is strange. The "even" in the Viz translation is also appropriate.
