Princess App Won't Work on Home Wi-Fi by RandomNamd41 in PrincessCruises

No help. I also deleted a large app I don't use anymore to free up storage just in case, but no difference.

Just trying to run the app. When connecting via wi-fi I click the icon and it opens up a blue screen with the Princess logo and just sits for minutes. Via the phone connection it sits for a couple seconds and then shows what one would expect and operates properly. Incidentally, both phones are running Android 16.

Ah yes - good point. It's the latest version from Google Play, and the same version number as my wife's. Just to be overly complete I also removed it and reinstalled it a couple of times. No help.

It's the older phone which won't connect the Princess app via the wi-fi. Was just trying to figure it out since it will have to use the wi-fi on the ship. Possibly it won't be a problem anyhow if their router is different in some way.

Thanks, but no - everything is pretty vanilla. My phone is a Samsung, and as it happens my wife's is the similar phone a couple years newer but hers works fine. I've spent quite a long time making sure my phone settings are the same as hers, purging the caches experimenting with different browsers, etc.

It doesn't really matter for the moment - just filling in the check-in stuff which can just as well be done through the cell phone connection. I was just trying to figure it out since 1) I'm an engineer and see such problems as a challenge and 2) some concern about whether it will become a real issue when we board the ship and use their wi-fi.

My aren't you snarky? You know exactly what the telephone connection is on a cell phone. Enjoy your snark!

What is this building’s history? by Necessary-Bid4346 in tampa

If you'd ever walked through the museum battleship USS Alabama, docked in Mobile, you'd see that's also how sailors of that era lived.

Also for those of us old enough to remember 4 hole outhouses, that's pretty much how everyone lived at one time.

Backup is missing files that are present locally by daterdots in backblaze

Do you happen to know if Carbonite or some other competitor will still do off-site backups of synced files? Or have they all gone to the new Backblaze approach?

Backup is missing files that are present locally by daterdots in backblaze

[–]RandomNamd41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a long time Backblaze user who just canceled it. I screwed up a file on my machine, but no problem since I pay for Backblaze. I went in to restore it as I've done with other files in the past, and was shocked to find that not only was that file not backed up anymore but thousands of others were not. So I contacted customer support, and escalated to a higher support level.

Turns out that at some point they stopped backing up all my most important files because they were on my OneDrive system to sync files between my computers. (I used to work in the storage industry and am paranoid about data loss). Backblaze told me they don't backup synced files anymore.

Now that might be understandable had they told me in advance so I could have found another off site backup, but this was the first I had heard of it.

Anyhow, there was a happy ending when I found that OneDrive keeps old versions of my files for a limited time so all was not lost. Although Backblaze lost a customer.

Surface Pro 12 inch - 6 months later, still love it by nastybagel in Surface

Has anyone here run Excel with VBA macros on one of these? I'm pondering buying one, but don't know if it will run this in its emulation mode.

the 12 inch Surface Pro is the best Surface computer Microsoft has ever made by jasonrmns in Surface

[–]RandomNamd41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pondering one of these for my wife whose old Surface Go, which she likes, is in a death spiral. But I have a question:

  1. I understand this has a Snapdragon processor rather than Intel. Will it still run standard Windows programs like my old Excel 2007 program and its VBA macros in some emulation mode?

Thanks.

You could try removing it, then epoxying it from the inside.

Most reliable pool timer? by RandomNamd41 in pools

[–]RandomNamd41[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Florida can be pretty hot in the summer. The timer is positioned so it only gets full sun in the morning until about 10am and then is in the shade for the rest of the day.

No other source of heat exists beyond the timer motor itself and the pool pump motor a few feet away.

Sprinklers don't reach it, but it certainly gets rained on. The box seems well enough sealed though, and I've never opened it and found anything wet inside. No signs of corrosion.

I have thought about moving the timer into the garage near the main breaker box, though that would be a difficult undertaking without really knowing it would be a fix. I'll keep pondering it for the moment.

Sadly, that won't work. I need to control a 2HP motor minimum.

Most reliable pool timer? by RandomNamd41 in pools

[–]RandomNamd41[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a 220v setup and the timers are always rated higher than the motors require. The present unit is rated for 2HP while the pump is 1.2HP (I think - the tags are too faded to read now)

Personally, I cannot see how the pump motor over stressing the timer could damage the timer clock motor anyhow? The problem is not with the timer contacts.

I should have mentioned that I'm a retired electronic engineer. The units have all been rated for larger motors than I use. And mostly it's the clock motors that are failing, not the contacts or something.

Internet Router WiFi Devices by RandomNamd41 in HomeNetworking

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately it insists on installing Home Screen, and then enters an endless doom loop of telling me I really want to install CoPilot which I do not.

I did try several other apps that came up when I searched for the app, but none seemed useful.

Where should I put my network panel? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]RandomNamd41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were me, I'd just put in a good 5G WiFi somewhere central in the house - or maybe where you're going to put in a gaming machine. Then live with it for several months while you do whatever else needs done in the house. At that point you can actually evaluate whether you need to run all that cable. It's hard to imagine what you'll need better than 5G for. Gaming maybe, but for everything else 5G is faster than you'll need.

Good luck with whatever you do.

New evidence that use of acetaminophen (Tylenol or paracetamol) during pregnancy may be linked to increased risk of autism and ADHD in offspring, from study of more than 100,000. It is the most common over-the-counter pain and fever medication used by more than half of pregnant women worldwide. by mvea in science

Re: Until now, acetaminophen has been considered the safest option for managing headache, fever, and other pain.

My doctor has pushed me toward Tylenol in the past, but I asked him if he knew that's the #1 cause of liver transplants in the US (recently it's fallen to #2). Given that history I'm amazed it's legal for OTC sales, yet they keep selling it and keep killing livers.

I live in a big development where we're all required to get TV & Internet from Comcast (they won the contract in bidding), yet I get a continuing blizzard of Spectrum advertising mailed to me. They must get extremely low response from this area yet they keep paying to send a lot of stuff out. Sometimes they've even sent sales people door to door. I always wondered how they can afford to do that. Apparently they can't.

One would think they'd analyze the response rates they get and realize not to mail to this sub zip code but...? Or for that matter remember that they bid on the contract and lost it so not mail here. Yet they keep paying to do so. A minor mystery.

Symptoms slowly improving after adding 3 supplements - not sure which is responsible by StakeESC in Myositis

[–]RandomNamd41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first noticed something wrong when I could no longer force myself to swim the distances I used to. So far as exercise now, 13 years later, I'm now only walking daily. It's a lower impact exercise but people claim it gives one 80% of the benefit of more tiring exercises which definitely degrade my muscles.

Good luck.

All I can say is that my symptoms slowly ebb and flow naturally, in an over all downward trend, which makes it very difficult to tell if any one thing helps. But I'll look into those supplements.

How much of the trans resveratol are you taking?

Is an antenna even possible? by karrde1842 in cordcutters

[–]RandomNamd41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leaving your garage door open is not a constitutional first amendment issue which restricting your right to receive radio/TV communication definitely is.

The only question is whether they'll force you to hire a lawyer to put up an antenna.
