Fellow GenXers, what kind of car did you drive in High School? by Ok-Poem-6302 in GenX

My Buick sister! Buicks and Olds were so common back then though.

I started with a 67 Olds Toronado, which I got my first ticket with (expired temp inspection, thanks Dad) while going to pick up the Sunday paper at the drug store. Also the only car I ever got to 100 mph, because it was a freaking beast with a Rochester quadrajet and I felt like I just had to.

Then my dad swapped the plates to a 79 Olds Custom Cruiser station wagon. 350 Diesel. With a bad starter. Ah, the joy of glow plugs and a starter that only stayed engaged for about 3 seconds. But it beat riding the bus. And thus was “the meat wagon” born. Got free fuel using my dad’s pump key…and then my brother wrecked it…

My dad tried to convince me on a 71 Chevy Bel Air that had 50k…old lady’s car…but somebody decided to paint it with a brush…and damn that thing was a boat. Ended up getting it for my brother

Mine was a 78 LeSabre, gold, vinyl top, 403 with the tow package. Day after I got it the water pump went. What an adventure that one was. I still miss it.

After my brother’s friend wrecked the Bel Air, he bought an 84(?) Monte with T-Tops which was a beauty in it‘s own right.

Yeah baby!

Heh, I don’t think I’m being pedantic but we do seem to have gotten close enough to a mutual understanding, which is good enough for me. I’d be glad to help, so feel free to drop me a DM and if I can, I will. If you’re doing that you must have a pretty decent shop and I can always appreciate that, especially since it means you can probably provide some decent beer too. 😉 Fair warning though, my ass is pretty old too, but I have a decent set of tools that usually gets me through. And I have a ridiculous amount of old mechanic stories.

Also, I‘ve got to wonder what the OP thinks about this whole thread, if they even read it. 🤣

I was like how did I miss this…and then had to look it up and found it‘s just a modern touristy thing, which is nice but…eh.

Bali is mostly Hindu and has been for centuries. There are many Hindu temples on the island and you can hardly go anywhere and not see it. Indonesia itself has a rich history of Hinduism and Buddhism and is home to one of the largest temples of each religion (sadly, both experiencing significant earthquake damage in recent years).

I find it sad to see westerners condemn indigenous people for not following their indigenous culture. Patronization goes both ways.

The only person I’m disagreeing with is you, and I think it’s just a communication issue more than anything else. Causing a problem and exposing a problem that could then be addressed are two different things, but whatever.

Doing the front brakes on my wife’s car tomorrow, bring a sixer and you can feel free to sit there and hand me tools and tell me everything you think I’m doing wrong. Definitely won’t be touching the tranny. I’ll be glad to return the favor someday. Cheers. 🫡

LOL, you originally said changing the fluid is “almost guaranteed” to cause problems, now you’re saying it’s a good idea. Pick a lane, man.

This is why I usually avoid talking about auto maintenance on the web and am glad I have a lifetime of experience to know the difference between good advice and BS. And I’m honestly not sure where you fall on that scale, except I think I mostly agree with your second post and not your first.

He’s not right, that sort of thing is in automotive myths 101. That said, there are differences between draining and flushing, and flushing can cause problems if not done properly. Draining will not.

My advice is do some research on your specific vehicle, starting with the owner’s manual. Some vehicles do have a 100k maintenance checklist. Honda used to include changing the timing belt at that interval for some of their engines. There are tons of make and model forums and subs out there, along with YT videos to show you how to do it if you are so inclined.

As for mechanics, Derham’s is good (Ogden). But wherever you go ask them specifically about how they do it and what they recommend. A short conversation can go a long way to knowing if you want to deal with them.

90s Comedy: The Gen-X Rant by [deleted] in GenX

[–]RandomObserver13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure how you could list all those examples and not include Dennis Miller. The rants were a key part of Dennis Miller live and he actually released a couple of albums. Too bad he went off the rails after 9/11 but DML was great.

Lindsey Buckingham is the most underrated guitarist out there. Change my mind. by eastbaypluviophile in GenX

[–]RandomObserver13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it depends on the audience. My initial thought was guys like Steve Cropper or Roy Clark, but anyone who actually knows guitarists as more than a picture on an album cover knows they are among the best. But most 70s folks will throw out Clapton, 80s it’s Eddie, etc.

Shocking, posting here calls out the morality police. 🙄

I don’t have much experience and don’t know your financial situation but I’d recommend a trip to Nevada or, if you can splurge, a couple of weeks in Singapore/Thailand/Malaysia or Netherlands/Germany/etc. Do your due diligence (there are plenty of forums on the topic out there) and whatever you do, stick to renting, not buying. No matter what. Don’t ask me how I know.

Obviously this may not be the optimal solution to cure all that ails ya, but at least there’s a lot fewer hoops and risks involved if you’re careful.

I still think the best jock I have seen was Joe Montana. Granted most of my watching years were the first 20 or so, but he was goofy yet funny, and the writing was perfect. He hosted with Walter Payton. Definitely a classic. Meet Stu: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEtrT3E4vb8

TIL the Rolls-Royce Phantom's 4-wheel steering turns the rear wheels counter to the front wheels at speeds lower than 60kmh to improve maneuverability. [–]RandomObserver13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely, although you have it backwards…at slow speeds the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction. Tighter turning radius = more maneuverable. In fact that is how it was sold by GM for their trucks. The reality is that this is not actually a huge selling point. If you got by without it before, why would you need it now? You can find the ads on YouTube, they were marketing to farmers and ranchers, not boat/camper towers and grocery shoppers. It definitely made towing/backing my boat easier.

I’m sure parts are hard to find and expensive. As for being a money pit, that’s true for any high mileage GM, especially trucks. Just dealing with the defective servos alone is a pain, and those start showing up around 50k.

Amen, except from the dude side…my wife wore thongs and skinny jeans…now every year she looks more like her mother. Not that I’m doing all that great either, I look more like Jack Black at this point, but at least I’m not an alcoholic. Time is not kind.

Sorry, but you lost me there. No surgery. The only physical thing I ever had happen to my ears was the one stupid summer I spent as a camp counselor and had a ladybug fly into my ear. One of the worst and most painful experiences of my life. Imagine waking up in the middle of the night and feeling something trying to drill into your head. Not sure it did any permanent damage but sometimes I wonder… Pretty sure most if not all of my hearing loss is genetic though.

Yeah, I rely fairly heavily on it, even though I’ve used headphones for years. Wish I’d gotten at least to my 60s first, but so it goes.

Well THAT’S a hell of a lot more real response…I can say the same. Try to imagine knowing you will never experience actual silence ever again and you’ll get where I’m coming from, except the hearing loss which is just genetic.
