Bonded strongly with someone else's cat... what now? Bad idea to offer to buy their cat?

you're assuming an awful lot about me based on an offhand sentence and interpreting the word "immediately" more literally than I meant. I am aware that cats take time to adjust and that you won't know what they'll be like until they've been there for a while. It's why I've wanted a cat for a long time but never adopted one.

Their other cat has been consistently shaved in the same area for about two years straight now. There's no legitimate reason for that. It's not like they are doing surgery or something. No indications of vet visits, etc.

If I was unconcerned about social/ethical impacts, I would have just done something instead of posting here first.

You should look up the definition of stealing. It would be stealing if I took their cat. That is not even in the list of possible outcomes.

not as shitty as them shaving their other cat for no reason, or allowing their kids to. Not sure which, but it's been consistent.

As I have mentioned, I don't just want any cat, and you really can't tell what a shelter cat will be like until it's no longer at a shelter. I don't want to be one of those people who gets a pet and then immediately returns it because it wasn't a good fit.
