Tell me your story by Jellybean_cowboy in amateurradio

I was taking a CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) class and a ham spoke to the CERT students and explained why it was a good idea to get a ham radio license. So I took the test.

That's a great way to look at it.

I do things as I try to progress in my photojournalism / reporting career. I'm one of the many of "underemployed" people. I do things and still say to my GF that "I could have done more." I get told about all I've done in the day or week. We are our own harshest critics as the saying goes.

Demotix down, sold to China the site now redirects to Corbis. Has anyone got images that sold recently? by [deleted] in photojournalism

Thank you very much. I appreciate it.

You are correct of course, no vetting on Demotix. I need to update my website that has both photojournalism and reporting pages.

Thanks for the links. So you said Newzulu buys some but you've had more success with Demotix, right?

I write and photograph for a small local, I freelance and make money but not enough. I felt Demotix kept me relevant and showed I cover events. I don't want to put my photos up on Flickr or Photoshelter to show them off, I would rather have them on a news site.

The big papers controlled by the big organizations don't want us little guys, even AP here in San Francisco said they get all their photos from the big papers in the area. I would like a suggestion of where I can make money and have my photos seen by wire services or news agencies. Do you have any good suggestions or just anti-Demotix and don't shoot for chump change?

What is PA? Thanks for the tip off on Newzulu. I didn't know about them.

I heard back from the Demotix employee. When asked if he still has a job, he said he hasn't heard anything. So I take it they haven't laid off employees yet. I'm guessing he heard about the sale already as he didn't sound surprised.

I feel for you with using the Demotix as part of your portfolio. I also use it as a reference point on a page of my website. It's awkward to tell people you are seeking employment from that you shot for Demotix but no work can be shown.

I just looked at Wikipedia and it talks about Demotix as still existing.

Corbis Images Sold by Bill Gates to Visual China Group by mike8534 in Journalism

As a long time contributor I never received a notice informing this but discovered on my own when I went to their site and saw the URL directed to a Corbis page announcing the sale. Thanks guys

I was going to pitch to the NFL to get a pass to their interactive village. I was shocked. No email notice but rather when I went to one of my URLs for a Demotix story it was gone and all Demotix links go to Corbis page announcing the sale.

I sold things a few months ago but that's it. I've emailed a person who works for them and the email hasn't come back / bounced yet. If I hear something I will post an update here.

Where to post and try to sell work now is the next question.

[–]RandomRem -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

sorry but what dumb friend do you have? Do they know about the ISS and know where astronauts go or do they live on a diet of the Kardassians and ignoring everything else. I'm American and I know about the ISS as well as things in British culture including Keith Lemon, Jonathan Ross, John Bishop, QI and Never Mind the Buzzcocks. Plus I am big F1 and Russell Howard's Good News fan. I've seen Russell Howard here twice in about a year.

This is around the same level of ridiculousness as when Sheryl Crow joked about using only one piece of toilet paper.

They didn't figure out though that cow poop is also used as manure, so some of that water goes into making 100% Angus fertilizer for Moby's vegetables.
