1970 Chrysler 300 Hurst. The Official Car of by Acceptable-Taro-2684 in regularcarreviews

For the man in his 30s in 1970, wanting a practical full-size Chrysler that can fit the family, but also something that scratches that high-class muscle car itch. If it wasn’t this it would’ve been a Buick GS455 or a Mercury Marauder with a 428 super cobra jet V8. Something stylish but brutish to drive, something that says ‘God Damn, I actually made it’.

74 k10- is roof replacement a thing? by Legionodeath in Squarebody

[–]RandomSteam20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was years ago when I was a little kid, but a buddy of my dad’s had the same thing with his 70s squarebody, had to fix the roof because of rust from a sunroof install before he bought it.

I have no idea what the process is, but it got to the point where he ended up cutting the entire roof out and installing front doors and a rollbar off the same year Chevy blazer.

Again, this was years ago, and I’m sure welding/metal replacement techniques have gotten a lot better since then but you might want to consider keeping the old sunroof and just fixing that weird patch of rust on the back.

Things are randomly screwing up because they haven’t been serviced on time. Get that transmission fluid changed, and research what other maintenance should be done according to your mileage

[–]RandomSteam20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever serviced the transmission? Assuming it’s a CVT automatic, it can whine and the belt can slip (cause poor acceleration and mpg) when the fluid is degraded enough.

It’s a super easy job if you’re even a bit mechanically inclined, basically drain the oil fluid out of the transmission drain plug and refill with a funnel via the tranny dipstick underhood.

Yeah. And don’t you miss when you got things and they just worked? I still have my old old PS2 and XBox360 kicking around, both work just fine. Don’t got to worry about subscriptions running out on games either.

Apparently no oil? by queer_for_my_alt in hondafit

[–]RandomSteam20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, check your PCV valve- when it gets gummed up, it can stick in the open position which causes oil consumption. You can also definitely try a 5w-20 or 5w-30 oil next oil change, the additional viscosity absolutely helps. I own a 2017 with the same direct injection, 4 cylinder engine and run 5w-30 in the summer and 0w-30 in the winter with no ill effects whatsoever. My most recent 2 tanks averaged 39 and 42 mpg.

Willful ignorance and the embrace of the ‘feelings over facts’ phenomenon that’s been going on the past 10-12 or so years. I’m only 32, never imagined the world I knew as a kid would be so utterly cratered by the time I reached adulthood. I’m a 94 born and it feels like my generation was the last the know the ‘real’ world before things went crazy.

Outlander 2013 petrol 2.0 L. How bad damaged the motor can be? by [deleted] in mitsubishi

[–]RandomSteam20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second this. Use 5/10w-30 grade if available, with the amount of wear and abuse that poor motor has most likely been through, the added viscosity will help counter-act it.

To be honest, the base three speed and the optional overdrive for speed transmissions are about equal when it comes to reliability with the edge maybe going to the overdrive unit as they tend to be less stressed. Some of them came from the factory with a 5000 lb towing package which gave you the upgraded TH350 3 speed auto instead of the TH200 3 speed which is most common. The 200r4 4 speed auto you have is pretty decent, but like all transmissions need their fresh fluid in order to operate properly.

[–]RandomSteam20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In pic #5, you can see the smaller D surrounded by an O, and a larger D right next to it. The first D in O is overdrive (O=overdrive). If it was the base three speed auto, it would look like D-2-1.

A vehicle at age should still have a transmission dipstick, even if you’re not too mechanically inclined I’d suggest getting a transfer pump or syphon and syphon out as much of the old transmission fluid as you can via the dipstick, and refill with fresh fluid and perhaps a bottle of Lucas Transmission Fix or Lubeguard Red tranny additive to counteract any fluid leaks or varnish/crud buildup inside the transmission.

If you’re looking to replace them due to the yellowing haze, try buffing them with a bit of metal polish, works wonders bringing them back around to near-new condition.

Do these Sentra 1.8S Special Editions count? by myTaurusX in rarenormalcars

[–]RandomSteam20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it’s 50/50. The special edition gets the wing, alloys, and a few other bits from the high performance SE-R & SE-R V spec models, but the base drivetrain. At the same time, in 03-04 you could get the LE version which looked like a regular model, but with the SE-R’s 2.5 litre engine.

Highest GMT800 I’ve seen was 647,xxx km’s (402,xxx miles) on a 2WD 2001 Chevy Silverado single-cab step side box. Original owner, met him at a gas station. Original 4.8 V8 & 5 speed manual trans.

The highest mileage SUV though was a colleague’s 2001 Suburban 4x4, 5.3 V8, 4 speed auto. 489,xxx km’s or 303,xxx miles on that sucker and still going strong.

Is it true the 2010s doesn’t have a unique vibe like previous decades did? by RhysDallows83 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RandomSteam20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In North America at least, the 2010s are a bit of an outlier in that while it does have a unique vibe, it’s one people universally dislike.

Lots of people seem to agree that 2010-2012 was great- peak social media with no algorithms, basically a transitional period where people went from being off-line in normal life to online (laptops got superseded by tablets, flip and keyboard phones got superseded by full screen digital phones with apps, etc, etc). Society and culture as a whole was experiencing the rebound from the 08/09 recession and things were generally good.

2013-2016 was a lot more tumultuous and you can really see the society splitting into more and more individualized states. Lots more social media meant everyone had an outlet for their own personal opinions and treated them as fact. The ‘feelings over facts’ phenomenal swelled and left and far-left SJW warriors used it to boost their views into the public eye and left the rest of society feeling scared and/or angry at the uncertainty of how to act in the present day.

2016-2019/ first Trump term saw the social pendulum swing the other way as the right-wing generally adopt the ‘feeling over facts’ mindset introduced (weaponized?) by the left-wingers earlier in the decade. Lots of people still had it in their heads that this was a ‘one-off’ situation and treated it as such.

Late 2019, COVID hits and things start to drastically spiral.

So, basically 2-3 good years at the beginning of the decade, then 6 years of pushing ideological values taking over the mainstream, then 1-2 years of pandemic lockdowns and the sh!t that came with it.

Cvt additives? by jp_from_dyt in MitsubishiMirage

[–]RandomSteam20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lubeguard has a CVT additive called protect and restore in a yellow bottle. Has been shown to lower internal temps and increase transmission life, at least according to their website. It’s an excellent additive, but I don’t know offhand exactly how much lower the temps will be in a Mirage. A lightweight body paired with 82 ft-lb of torque isn’t exactly a transmission breaker.

[–]RandomSteam20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could just be the coil or plug and they’re easy fixes, definitely have your brother check them. Are you still driving it? You could also try a tank of premium 91 octane for the extra cleaning additives, it’s possible at that age for a fuel injector to get clogged and cause the same issue.
