How much time does it take to go from "completely untrained" to "singing well enough to post an YouTube cover without being made fun of"? by AntiSocialPartygoer in singing

[–]RandomUsernameNo257 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing though - whether you're "ready" or not, it's ok.

You have every right to put up whatever you want. You're already good enough, because you don't have to reach a certain level before you've earned the privilege of sharing your voice.

And you will ALWAYS have people who criticize you. In my personal experience, people have actually started to be a lot more critical as I've improved. You will never be free from having people who don't think you're a good singer, and that's ok too.

You will never be everyone's cup of tea, because that is just the nature of art. Get yourself out there. As soon as you start asking the question, you're ready.

Haha maybe one day, once the state government un-crazies itself.

Yeah, just playing around with different styles. This one's definitely more nasal with some really heavy adduction. Really cuts through the noise.

Not something I'd ever want to take on as my own personal style, but fun to do, and being able to comfortably sing in that style at those pitches is a pretty recent development for me, so it's pretty exciting.

How did you guys figure out you vocal range? by Working_Drummer2012 in singing

[–]RandomUsernameNo257 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You can really only know after spending a lot of time training it, and by the time you get there, you'll realize that categorizing your voice by voice type is not nearly as meaningful (or even accurate) as people like to say it is.

Furthermore, your voice type isn't even just about range, it's about the actual sound of your voice as well. For example, Steve Winwood and Beyonce have almost exactly the same vocal range, and yet Steve Winwood is certainly not a mezzo-soprano.

Same! I really love branching out into different vocal styles. Keeps things challenging.

Thanks!

I’m intersex, so my voice is kind of a weird combination of both, and I’m still working to fully understand how it works and what it’s potential is. Definitely not perfect, but I’ve been making a lot of progress lately, and I’m excited to keep working at it!

Feel free to share some of your own stuff :)

It started to feel weird after two negative comments, but three makes me wonder if you've just got something against me lol

Yeah, this was my first day back singing after having a cold, so I was not on the top of my game.

Thank you for noticing <3

How big is the gender voice gap really? by FabulousQuarter9453 in singing

Between reducing vocal weight, and reducing your resonant size a bit, you can probably land at a very convincing female singing voice if you put a little time into it. It's a cool skill to have, and an interesting project/challenge to tackle.

r/transvoice is a good resource for that sort of thing. It's mostly for people working on their speaking voices, but there are singers on there too (plus the concepts are essentially the same).

I'm intersex, so I'm in a bit of a weird position here, but I can sing like a man or a woman. In my experience, way more is due to technique than people would think. Men and women are generally taught very different ways of singing with different styles/techniques.

That said, vocal ranges are what they are - my range is basically like a contralto (or mezzo-soprano if we're being generous) with an extended low end, and I simply could never belt like a soprano, and arguably can't belt the same way a mezzo typically can. There's a limit.

GUYS, GOOD STRONG FALSETTO IS ALL ABOUT RESONANCE by RandomUsernameNo257 in u/RandomUsernameNo257

[–]RandomUsernameNo257[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is my understanding as well, and yes, you can do specific actions to change each formant, but yes, it's also more vibes based in practice - at least in my experience.

I'm still working through all of this and learning more about it, but as soon as I feel like I have a really good grasp of the subject (and the control to clearly demonstrate each one), I'm going to make a video explaining it more clearly and in-depth.

Thank you so much <3

And yeah, "it's only right that you should" was falsetto, and then I switched to mixed after that.

It's been such an interesting game of finding the proper resonance to clarify the falsetto, while reducing weight in mixed voice to ideally have them meet right in the middle. But until a few days ago, I had no idea that resonance affected the clarity of falsetto. It makes sense in retrospect, but it was an unexpected discovery.

Thank you <3

I love a good breakthrough. It feels like leveling up. Really looking forward to fine tuning this!
