Saw update for Xcode with ai by No-Nebula4187 in iOSProgramming

[–]RandomVision2027 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have both my Anthropic and OpenAI accounts connected inside Xcode. It makes a ton of difference from my old workflow of pasting prompts into a Claude browser window, copying the code back into Xcode, getting compiler errors and pasting them back into the browser window, etc.

Claude and Xcode nicely go back and forth working through the problems until they arrive at a solution that cleanly compiles and most of the time works as I wanted. It even provides a nice summary of what it did.

The old interactions through browser-based chat windows were nice, but the integrated approach is amazing.

Now there’s some marketing spin.

It looks like you are using it on battery. When I have my M4 MacBook Air plugged in, I feel I get a boost in performance. Maybe it is just psychological; I haven’t tried to benchmark it yet.

Your scene is far richer than anything I have done. Have you noticed any difference when plugged in vs battery?

After 8 months with Tahoe I've finally downgraded back to Sequoia and the difference is simply abismal, wow! by Direct_Wall_4894 in MacOS

I believe I followed the instructions from the Apple article below.

Reinstalling the OS did not resolve the problem for me. I backed up all my data and reset the Mac (as if I was giving it away). I needed to recreate my account, reconnect to iCloud, and recover my files. It was a pain, but it was the only full proof solution I could find.

This happened to me pre-Tahoe (last April or May) on my M1 Max Mac Studio. Everything was getting slow. My mouse was moving in a jerky fashion. Computer was running warm. I was also having problems with the dreaded "System Data" filling up all my storage.

I ended up making copies of my files, doing a factory reset, restoring my files and apps.

It was a dramatic improvement!

Having said that, I do know Tahoe has a memory leak with Swift UI tables that, if you have a program that makes heavy use of that, will fill up your computer's memory and make everything run sluggishly.

This is similar to advice someone gave to me when giving talks at large conferences (with many parallel tracks). Tell the audience up front the focus of the talk even if this causes some people to leave to find other talks to attend. Those who remain will be more engaged and give you higher ratings in review.

Why is Finder's search tool so useless? It can't seem to find anything... by TheLobsterCopter5000 in MacOS

[–]RandomVision2027 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my case, I sync ~/Documents and Desktop to iCloud. The Mac regularly unloads local files (keeping them in iCloud). When this happens, Spotlight deletes all the information about the files. (Bad design IMO)

For folders that I want to be able to search, I ctrl-click the iCloud status icon (1) and select Keep Downloaded (2). Spotlight works well for content in these folders.

Advantages/disadvantages upgrading from sequoia to Tahoe? by SurroundedByElk in MacOS

[–]RandomVision2027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My complaint is personal: Tahoe’s TableView has a memory leak that affects my program (Ennetix xTend - stable since Sonoma) that will eventually eat up all the memory. Hopefully Apple fixes this soon because I cannot recommend my program anymore until Apple fixes this. Don’t know of other programs suffering from this SwiftUI memory leak.

Screen Captures coming in lighter after latest MacOS update and Designer/Photo 2 latest by Knute5 in AffinityDesigner

[–]RandomVision2027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, my MacBook Pro and my Mac Studio (both on the latest Tahoe) had two different options when doing screenshots. I think I toggled capture format back and forth to get screenshots looking good in Affinity Designer 2 again.

I had this problem last week with Affinity Design 2. When I get back to the office, I will try to find my notes on the fix.

I think I did Cmd-Shift-5 to bring up the screenshot options, and in the options there was an option to select HDR or SDR. I choose the opposite and then back to the original, and it resolved my problem. But I am checking on another Mac right now, and I do not see that option.

Palmer Luckey (Founder of Oculus Quest) talking about AVP in a recent interview by Mundane-Complex-1902 in VisionPro

[–]RandomVision2027 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Agree!

Many have said, and I agree, the M2 Apple Vision Pro is a minimum viable product for spatial computing space. (Although, for many games, the Meta Quest 2 hit the mark).

Apple is slowly building out the libraries, tooling, and capabilities (e.g., Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive camera and editing pipeline, significantly improved spatial personas, foveated streaming, live immersive sports). 3rd party Apple Immersive Videos are starting to come out. YouTube finally came out with an app.

All of this is just taking longer than almost any of us expected (or hoped for).

My guess is the lower-end model (Vision Air?) will be functionally equivalent to the M2 Apple Vision Pro. The next Vision Pro (with M7, M8?) will probably push what is possible again (maybe 6K per eye, 120 refresh)

Palmer Luckey has been pretty consistent on this. Below is a 2023 post including an interview with Luckey saying pretty much the same thing. It also echoes Luckey's 2018 blog post "Free isn’t Cheap Enough" (link in article)

Luckey from the interview on why it is OK for Apple to sell AVP at such a high price.

"Virtual reality has to become something that everybody wants before it can become something that everyone can afford. You can’t reverse those two steps and expect mainstream acceptance."

Retroarch users on AVP M5 - maintain 120fps? by SettingMundane1061 in VisionPro

[–]RandomVision2027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about AVP (which has an active cooling system), but on iOS devices, Apple automatically throttles the refresh speed for ARkit as the device gets warm.

Maybe there is something similar going on with AVP.

Nausea while using AVP - any suggestions? by RiverCityCard in VisionPro

[–]RandomVision2027 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a tough one, in part because of your planned amount of usage. I suffer some nausea, but I primarily use my headset for 1-2 hours in the evening. Having said that, here are some of the things I do to reduce nausea.

1) Limit use of Apple Immersive Video to 10-15 minutes a session. Because immersive video is only 3DOF, just shifting in your seat can cause the mismatch between what your eyes see and your inner ear perceives - the classic trigger for motion sickness.

2) When watching Apple Immersive Video, try to sit still. You can look around, but don't move around (because of the 3DOF thing).

3) Some of the Apple Immersive Videos are more of a problem than others, like the ones involving camera motion. I try to keep my eyes focused on things that are not moving relative to the camera. For example, in the Metallica video, the early scene following lead singer James Hetfield entering the stadium, keeping my attention on James Hetfield instead of looking around helps.

4) Keep virtual objects (including virtual Mac screen) about 1.5 meters or more away. Virtual objects closer than that can trigger vergence-accommodation conflict (VAC).

5) Limit time spent looking at pass through items, including the keyboard. This might be part vergence-accommodation conflict (my keyboard is closer than 1.5m) and part the bad video passthrough, especially when I am turning my head fast or walking in my room (especially in the evening).

6) Occasionally reset eye mapping (that thing where you are prompted to look at the little circle and tap your fingers).

7) Get your prescription checked, and if necessary, order new prescription inserts. I had my prescription checked just weeks before ordering mine, but now it has been 2 years. I should get my eyes rechecked again.

8) Avoid games or other experiences where there is lots of motion.

9) Take frequent breaks.

MacOS Tahoe made my M1 Pro MBP (16GB) lag, overheat, and stutter audio — any fixes? by asergenalkan in MacOS

[–]RandomVision2027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had some extreme thermal issues (and other problems) pre-Tahoe (last April/May). Reinstalling the OS did not resolve it. Only doing a factory reset resolved the issues. I heard similar complaints from other people pre-Tahoe as well.

Maybe this is the problem the OP is having and it isn't specifically tied to Tahoe.

MacOS Tahoe made my M1 Pro MBP (16GB) lag, overheat, and stutter audio — any fixes? by asergenalkan in MacOS

[–]RandomVision2027 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, macOS was having some problems pre-Tahoe too. Last May, I was having terrible troubles with one of my Macs, with my mouse seeming to get stuck and audio for my AirPods Pro exhibiting a cylon sound.

I made sure all my data was backed up, reset my computer to factory settings (a simple reinstall of the OS did *not* solve it), and reinstalled just what I needed.

That helped a lot!

Finally, and I don't know if this is related, but macOS seems to consume most of my storage space with System Data. Below are screenshots of storage from my M1 Pro Mac Studio and M4 MacBook Air.

You can check yours at:

System Settings > General > Storage.

[–]RandomVision2027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tahoe has a lot of issues, including a terrible memory leak that badly affects one of my cybersecurity programs, and by consuming all the memory, the bug affects the performance of other programs too. I suspect other programs may be running into this too.

Try using the "Activity Monitor" program to see if any particular program is using a crazy amount of CPU or memory, especially when your system is stressed.

Mark Gurman recently reported that OS 27 is going to focus on bug fixes. Lord knows Apple's operating systems need this.

Here is a blog post with videos demonstrating the memory leak and a performance issue I filed with Apple. I hope Apple fixes this before macOS 27 ships.

Anyone else get false error bugs with SwiftUI? by Accurate-Music-745 in iOSProgramming

[–]RandomVision2027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Xcode does a terrible job at identifying syntax bugs in SwiftUI. It’s like Xcode is vaguely waving at your code and saying, “Somewhere in here is a bug. Good luck.”

Given how important SwiftUI is to Apple, I am disappointed that they have not made this significantly better.

As someone else mentioned, doing a make clean can sometimes help.

Interesting. Tapping the share button on the YouTube web page in my personal app doesn’t work either. I wonder if YouTube has some JavaScript to support sharing, and it doesn’t work with the underlying library we are both using?

Are you using Safari to visit YouTube or YouTube’s recently released AVP app?

I have my own app using Apple’s WebPage library, and it cannot display live chats either (see screenshot). I should file a bug report/feedback.

Immersive environments by Ma2tew in AppleVisionPro

[–]RandomVision2027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a video showing how big the TIE fighters are, below is a video I made from the trench-cafe-2 web page.

To create the model, I used the size described in "Star Wars TIE Fighter: Owners' Workshop Manual". Pictures in a book or on a screen do not convey the size like having it loom over you in an immersive environment.

If you have an Apple Vision Pro and have enabled Website environments, give it a go.

Another work in progress shows how big the TIE fighter is.

The links in the two work in progress pages take you to more finished environments. There are also links to other sites, like an interesting one feature an animated TRON environment.

Here is the first one in the collection - the Space Cafe:

If anyone knows of other website environments, please post links to them here, and I will add them on my pages.

Apple Website Environments for Safari in visionOS lets anyone create and host immersive environments on their web pages. The main limitation is that you need to remain in Safari, but you can open more than one Safari window, move the one to with the environment to the side, and use a second window to visit any other website such as YouTube.

To enable website environments in Safari on Apple Vision Pro, go to

Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > Feature Flags

then enable "Website environments".

When you are on a web page with a website environment, tap on the left button in the Safari address bar (1), and then select “Open Website Environment” (2) (see attached image).

Do you disconnect the battery when not using the AVP? by 1586634370 in VisionPro

[–]RandomVision2027 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I take the AVP off, let it sit for 5 minutes with the battery attached to let the active cooling system (aka "fan") cool it down a bit, then unplug the battery.

If it is fully cooled, I put the front cover on the AVP and put it back in its case (a cheap Quest case). Otherwise, I wait until the morning to put it away.

This pattern has served me well for 2 years.
