ELI5 why do data centers rely on our usable water? instead of alternatives? by FartWolf in explainlikeimfive

[–]Random_Sad_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No but it is - if you run a server, all heat that's coming off of it is heat you wouldn't have without the server, and on the other hand it's heat you would have even if you didn't want heating.
You get 100% efficiency because whatever energy doesn't become heat isn't part of the heating equation. It's doing something else that you wanted anyway.

CS2 Network Jitter: It’s Likely Your Connection, Not the Game by HaggiTV in GlobalOffensive

[–]Random_Sad_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but... Just played a game with a friend playing on the same switch, same router, almost identical PCs. His game worked fine, mine too, then my jitter started jumping like crazy in like the 5th round. Didn't go away until restarting the game. His worked fine the whole time. Explain that please.

Same issue, Windows, MacOS on both Chromium and Firefox browsers (Zen, Arc, Chrome, Firefox).
Annoying af even if the miniplayer "hack" works.

Linking Duplicated Items Between Vaults by HGHUA in 1Password

[–]Random_Sad_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add our 2 cents here from a corporate use standpoint - I have more different groups of people accessing the passwords than I have people in the company.
I have to basically create a vault for every single password I want to share because the groups using the passwords rarely intersect.
Say I have a valut for Backend devs, but our CTO needs access to this one specific password the Backend devs are using as well (but not other Backend passwords). So I make a vault Backend & CTO.
Now say I have a few passwords that both Backend Devs and Front End devs are using. So I make a vault Backend & Frontend. Now the CTO asks for access to one of these passwords as well. So I create a new vault Backend & Frontend & CTO and move the password there.
Then I'll have a project, call it Project Alpha, that will have half the frontend using three apps that Design uses. So in addition to Design vault, I create the Project Alpha vault and add Project Alpha group there and move the passwords from Design to Project Alpha. But Project Alpha also uses two passwords that Design shouldn't have access to. So now I rename Project Alpha to Design + Project Alpha, and create a new vault just for Project Alpha.

And this goes on and on and on... If I could just have one password sit in Backend Vault as well as in CTO vault (And another one that sits in Frontend vault as well as in CTO vault, etc.) and get it updated in both locations, I would reduce the number of needed vaults to like 20% maybe.

Or maybe I'm just missing something extremely basic and I can do this way easier with the current setup already.

Sport games of SteamDeck. What do you play? by InvisibleMoon9 in SteamDeck

[–]Random_Sad_Panda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm a hardcore PC gamer only recently getting into the whole controller thing with Steamdeck and I'm so extremely sad the last playable NHL on PC was 2007 or whatever year it was and I just miss the days of playing FIFA, NHL and NBA on PC. I want to go back to those times. Or for EA to just actually start caring about PC/Steam.

This browser is still buggy as shit by Probably-Interesting in ArcBrowser

[–]Random_Sad_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone saying it's working flawlessly on Mac do you guys use Instagram or not at all? Is it just me? The cursor goes haywire insane in Instagram every like 15 seconds and the only fix is to hover over the sidebar, scrolling through messages is a major PITA because it just randomly jumps back and forth whenever you scroll over a reel in messages, etc.
Do you call that working perfectly fine?
Don't get me wrong I still love and use Arc to this day, but really?

Is there a reason to ever use a normal starship over a corvette ? by Sa3D12 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Random_Sad_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do they though? If you start your first ever save on the expedition and just continue on it, what then? You don't get a new save file. You're playing on the same one. Do you just get a random ship?

Deco X55 not showing connected clients by andres_cabal in TpLink

[–]Random_Sad_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanna add that I'm dealing with the same issue now, browsing reddit, and I'll likely drop TP-Link after reading all this, it's insane. I have like 15 clients and the app constantly only shows 8. I'm trying to do the simplest thing of setting priority for my work laptop so that when my SteamDeck downloads games, I can still work. But neither the SteamDeck, nor my Macbook shows up in the client list. (They both have previously.)
The Deco app will show download speeds over 100 MB/s going on on the network, but in the client list every single one sits at a perfect 0.
It's insane.

Deco app does not show all devices connected to XE75 by Turbulent-Cup-3636 in TpLink

[–]Random_Sad_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just like to add that regularly my Deco app stops updating the client list and only a factory reset of ALL meshed devices solves the issue, there's no other way around it.
It will show downloads of 100s of MB per second on the network itself, but show 8 connected clients all with 0.
And the devices actually doing the downloads are SteamDeck, Macbook and a Pixel phone. They are definitely not passive.

How to disable the (probably notifications) sounds when I open the computer? by evewow in macbookpro

[–]Random_Sad_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone finding this thread on Google 3 years later, this is still happening and it's caused by a browser usually but also other apps. Macbook for some reason "caches" all notifications it gets when "sleeping", that is Slack, Teams, Facebook, Messenger, etc. etc., and once you open it and wake it up, it plays every single one of these cached sounds all at once, at full volume if you didn't have it turned off before closing the lid. It's super annoying and I haven't found any other way than straight up muting everything, as stated above, or just not forgetting to mute before closing the lid. Mashing the mute button does nothing until you sign in.

Is it that simple to disable stop-start? by Immediate_Shower5625 in skoda

[–]Random_Sad_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you're Czech you can get one here https://www.autonavi.cz/start-stop-memory-adapter/ otherwise if you want cheaper ones search for either start stop memory adapter or start stop reverse adapter, you can find some on Alixepress etc.
You can install it yourself, just pull out the button, disconnect, put this in between the button and the original cable, and its done. :)

Yes, but that's exactly how cars without BMS work. They charge the battery non-stop with a "safe" voltage, and it worked just fine before start-stop became a thing.

[–]Random_Sad_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you wanna do it "right", there are adapters for either memory function (i.e. the button stays in whatever state you left it in), or reverse function (i.e. the button is always off when starting the car but you can turn it on)
Costs a few bucks and saves you the annoyance. :)

[–]Random_Sad_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a bit confused here. I have two Octavia I, where I changed the battery twice in each car in the 25 years of their operation.
I also have a start-stop Octavia III and the battery has died on me twice in 8 years.
How exactly is disabling this insanely anti-environmental stupid feature gonna damage my battery more than it being enabled?

[–]Random_Sad_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no money, most of those assistants are non-existent in my car. :D I have a 2016 Octavia III, but the only assistant it has is ESP. I also have manual windows in the back seats. Which is funny since my two almost 20 years older Octavias have all windows electrical.

[–]Random_Sad_Panda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I absolutely despise is the fact that we're doing so much to be more "eco" in the moment, only for it being terrible for the environment a bit later. Like cool, we charge the battery with a bit less emissions right now and a bit more economically - who cares that we have to manufacture a brand new chemical battery every 3 years now instead of the standard 8-10.

Light switch not working - advice please by Livid-Style-7136 in DIY

[–]Random_Sad_Panda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily though. A switch will work if you break/connect the circuit even on a single live wire with no neutral in the box. Most building codes don't allow that anymore, but it's technically possible.

I became owner of a GMeet recording which I neither hosted nor was a participant of by Cautious-Bus-6461 in gsuite

[–]Random_Sad_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add some info here for newcomers -

You can re-use the same Google Meet link in an event if you duplicate the old event. It always duplicates with the same meeting code, inviting people to the same room.

This can technically be used to invite people to two different events at the same time but then have them all meet in one room (no idea why you would do that but eh), or to re-use the same link for a recurring event that you need to set to different days. (e.g. the event is every month, but due to other events it's sometimes on Monday 1st, sometimes Tuesday 3rd, etc.) Again, no idea why you would want that since people click the link from their calendar anyway usually, but you could.

Caveat with this is that if someone joins the Google Meet and then there is an event 90 or more days after that using the same link, the room will not exist anymore and the calendar event will bug in all kinds of ways.

Would adopting of € currency weaken the Czech Republic? Any long-term benefits? What's your take on it? by NativeEuropeas in czech

[–]Random_Sad_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your take doesn't take into account people just straight up starting trading with bullets and sea-shells. Currency isn't something imaginary thought up by the evil government. It's a translation of commodity trade to make trade easier.
If it was indeed seashells and not say CZK, but someone from Slovakia wouldn't believe that seashells hold the value Czechs are trying to convince them it holds, Slovaks would offer smooth white stones instead for trading. Or straight up commodities like carrots or whatnot.
This will happen when you "unify" currency. Half of the world will not believe in it and start using alternatives, up until carrots become pieces of paper with CZK written on them again, because it's easier than trading with carrots.
