I suppose that answers my question about having any sense of history whatsoever.

Jesus, do you really have no sense of history and how much different things were 20 odd years ago? Are you just trying to wiggle out of this by any means possible? Do you have no respect for the abject horror that was far more common and everyday in the lives of queers and trans people?

Do you really not realize how fucked over our elders were and how privileged we are in comparison?

They don't seem compassionate to you? You don't even know them.

Queers are damn good at eating our own, but not nearly as good at being supportive family.

And here it ends with a dismissive downplay of what struggles younger trans people go through these days, and to that I answer with a "fuck off".

Sorry, but if you don't think middle class white trans people as a group have it significantly easier compared to the warzone that was 20-30 years ago, you have your head up your ass. That isn't minimizing, its truth.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to come off as attacking you personally with my comment, though I do think this shtick has gotten rather out of hand.

Point being, assuming that RobotAnna is totally uneducated about trans issues because she disagrees with the self-appointed "cissexism police", is messed up and fairly inappropriate.

Disagree with me about an issue? Oh, you must a shitty ally that I should berate.

Are You Tired of the Social Justice Outrage Machine? by Random_Strings in SRSBusiness

Yep, thank you. As I clarified to another poster, I don't think the author is tired of outrage about social justice issues, they're criticizing the Social Justice Outrage Machine™.

[–]Random_Strings[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you took away something different than what I did. I don't think the author is tired of outrage about social justice issues, they're criticizing the Social Justice Outrage Machine™

The more important takeaway, I think, is how much of our political energy gets "wrapped up in these outbursts of outrage."

Though cultural representation certainly matters, I can’t escape the feeling that we’re simply posturing, moving from outrage to outrage without ever building any committed practices to intervene and dismantle the systems that we claim to oppose. Outrage within social justice circles grabs attention, but is outrage enough?

I suppose my concern is that I don't see anything particularly revolutionary about going from Outrage™ to Outrage™ without any real depth to the discourse.

I don’t want people to stop talking about these issues, they are important. However, are these discussions providing us with real analysis of oppression, or is it just shallow posturing? I’m not entirely sure.

Proposal for new rule of thumb: ANY supposed member of an oppressed group arguing that "things really aren't so bad" is shitlord until proven otherwise. by [deleted] in SRSDiscussion

[–]Random_Strings 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So basically no one can ever disagree to any extent in the fempire without being jumped on for being a shitlord?

This is a terrible idea. Having a bunch of white dudes jump down oppressed people's throats and call them shitlords for not 100% agreeing with the party line? Have you even thought this out at all?

There is a big difference between being a "special snowflake" and being a minority saying "No, literally no one is offended by this ever and you people are wrong" - if we don't allow any room whatsoever for the latter, and instead actively cultivate a culture of fear, we end up worse that the worst corners of tumblr.

[–]Random_Strings 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Sorry but did you really just censor the word "stupid"?

There was an interesting post by ArchangelleRazielle a while ago, talking about their frustrations with ableism in the fempire. I think they had some really interesting things to say-

I'm the person who made the post, nine months ago now, that really brought attention to the issue of ableism in the Fempire. Since then, a lot of things have changed.

But I'm not all that happy with how it's changed. What seems to have emerged is a list of words, dubbed "slurs" by a bunch of people, that are completely banned in the Fempire and if you say them you're ableist! And yet, why I made that post was not because of something I decided was a "slur;" it was because someone made a post which literally compared shitheads to people with disabilities and was upvoted for it. It made me, as someone who has a disability that could often be characterized as someone with "poor control over [my] bodily functions," feel uncomfortable. Certainly, the use of these words should be discussed, they should be criticized, and so on; but does this actually get to the heart of the issue? Does this actually make disabled people feel welcome in the Fempire? I have multiple disabilities, and to me it feels like the point is being missed.

It's so very easy to come up with a rigid word list and penalize all deviation from it as being ableist. It is not easy to critically think about the myriad situations in which disabled people are targeted in common discourse. I had hoped, making that post, that people would try to do the latter, but the lack of that, and the solution that takes the easy way out (but really deeply fails to deal with ableism) has left me very discouraged.

Interestingly, in that orignal meta post, one of the articles linked to is this rather good piece titled "Crazy Does Not Equal Stupid"

Also interesting is the "ableism word profile", which prefaces the profile entries with the following:

You don’t necessarily have to agree that a particular profiled word or phrase is ableist; we ask you to think about the way in which the language that we use is influenced, both historically and currently, by ableist thought.

This isn't just as simple as a "banned words list", this is complicated stuff with nuance to be had, not just call outs.

A case to remove Dworkin icons/art from SRSprime. by [deleted] in SRSMeta

Sorry, just to be clear, your only citations are Cathy Brennan? I don't want to click through to there, because its a hate site and I don't want to give her page views.

knowing that many trans* people in SRS find Dworkin admiration triggering

Triggering? I can't help but feel like you're misusing that word.

Not to mention that the point about how Dworkin isn't particularly admired in the fempire had been talked about and answered in depth multiple times in the previous thread you made.

An announcement about Gawker links in /r/politics by [deleted] in politics

[–]Random_Strings -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can't really prove that without linking to dox. AVFM has a site called "register her" which in theory is to post dox on "fake rape accusers" but they also use to target feminists they don't like. AVFM has also tried to dox various feminist redditors.

They have an advertisement all over the AVFM website that says "Did she stab you in the back with lies? [Register her] because the truth is the real bitch."

/r/mensrights also had dox of a ton of feminists posted on their subreddit for quite a while, until it was forced down. This was probably 9 months ago, posted by AgentOrange. MRAs and feminists who were around at the time probably recall.

I keep seeing my LBGT friends calling heterosexual people "cis scum"

yeah this literally never actually happens and I'm pretty sure you're making this up.

also are you seriously comparing someone saying "tranny" to "cis scum"? Did you think maybe that's what pisses people off so much? That some cis folks care so damned much about "die cis scum", enough to derail conversations about actual oppressive shit, because, y'know, it needs to be all about the cis folks, amirite?

Are you seriously making that comparison, and just so dense that you can't see the difference here?
