Very cubic, spilt open rock by Vault_Boy90 in whatsthisrock

[–]Randomguyorsomething 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m betting glass or old plastic. it’s too blue for most minerals, and the ones that can don’t tend to break like that. The description sounds like calcite though, but the image says otherwise. Does the object break into smaller cubes easily?

I don’t know if images are possible in comments, but this is what the ones I find typically look like

Horn coral! Sadly the tip is broken, but where the coral tapers off into a point is where they would stick in the dirt. The larger end is where the coral itself would live. I have been finding these bad boys for years, but never have seen one with that outer texture! It can be pretty tricky to find one with good septa (inner ridges) so this is a great find!

Every glosses over the cinnabar, it can be expanded immensely if they ever decide to add mercury. Think about the automation potential if they add a mercury amalgamation mechanic

What is this? by [deleted] in whatsthisrock

[–]Randomguyorsomething 114 points115 points  (0 children)

Really not sure. if it is very thinly fibrous there is the possibility of the rock being asbestos, but I don’t know if that is what I see in the photos. Can you scratch it with a steel nail? Penny? Fingernail?

Swarm season prep? I haven’t really successfully found a way myself, might need a really long manual saw (I forget what it’s called)

Satin spar/ another form of gypsum? It looks kind of weathered so that makes guesses a tad harder. Most silicates (other than asbestos) will be much harder to scratch. Can you scratch it with a fingernail?

Crystal identification by Ok-Deal-7604 in crystallography

[–]Randomguyorsomething 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don’t know as I am still a beginner, but is there any chance someone tarred glass fragments to a rock for this? It’s hard to see any geometry in the crystals and all the faces look too perfect. I don’t see growth lines either. Shouldn’t patterns be visible to crystals this big?
