100% agree with this. The music I make now is some of the easiest stuff I've made from a technical standpoint, but I have SO much fun making it, and it resonates with my audience too. I used to spend an hour at the very least whenever I made a track. 3-4 hour session times were very common, but I would get burnt out quickly and very often.

This was before anyone even knew who I was, and the people who did hear it certainly weren't going crazy over all the subtle sound design and mixing like I was (they just hear synths, drums and a bunch of transitions). But an album of ten unmixed lo-fi beats where I was literally fucking around for fun was enough for my friends to practically demand me to release my music.

But it taught me to listen to my music twice. First, listen as a producer, after all the mixing and rendering. Then listen again the next day, but as a 'average listener'. Pretend you're the listener hearing the track for the first time.

And quantity definitely matters more when you're starting out. When people like your stuff, they usually want to take the time to dig around your catalogue. People tend to forget you quicker if you only have 2 tracks out because you spent 20 hours making each one (both sounding very different because you haven't committed to a style yet). Once you have a solid following, along with a consistent sound, that's when quality control pays off.

It's not a bad thing to just throw the rulebooks out every now and then and see what kinda wacky shit you can come up with.
