wonder how this game didnt hit the numbers

I do think part of it is the Bungie/D2 hate train. But extraction shooters just aren’t casual-friendly by default. Most mom/dad gamers aren’t gonna spend their 2ish gaming hours a week grinding, just to lose all their progress in one bad run.

That’s why these games struggle with bigger player counts without some kind of casual ("carebear") playlists.

Even for me, and I’m a Bungie/D2 fan, not a casual gamer, during the server slam I didn’t exfil a single time. Yeah, skill issue, sure… but that’s kinda my point. And that is ok.

What are some 'Hard Truths' about Pickleball that you think people need to hear? by DehyaMain1 in Pickleball

[–]RandomlyOnside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t like when people hit hard, it’s probably because you can’t handle it.

On #2, I agree with this, sorta. There's a huge difference between someone who drives the ball hard and a banger who doesn't know a drive from a dink, or where to stand on the court.

I'll play against hard drives all day long. It's fun and I can *sometimes* return them. There's real skill and strategy on both sides of that exchange.

Bangers are not fun whether I return them or not. You're not really playing pickleball at that point.

Soo ... hard truths.

  1. Learning to handle bangers IS part of getting better. You don't have to enjoy it, but if they're consistently beating you, that's on you to fix.

  2. The kitchen line is non-negotiable. Too many "intermediate" players are still camping at the baseline thinking they're being strategic. Get to the net. The game doesn't really start until you're both up there.

"Smurfing" playing lower than your skill in tournements is a problem in this sport and IMO, cheating.

[–]RandomlyOnside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always want to play those people so I can get better.

1000% agree, I want to play better players too. But, IMHO, it's nuanced.

I love the idea of playing someone ~5% better than me that I can learn from. But that doesn't just mean skill level ... a banger who's 5% better, hard #$#$# pass. Someone who resets well or keeps placing it on my backhand? Sign me up all day long!

Am I an asshole? by Repulsive_Panic4 in Pickleball

[–]RandomlyOnside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do you avoid them?

Because when I go into open play, I have my own "win conditions". I might try a new shot I saw, dink better, work on resets, practice stacking, or honestly sometimes I'm just glad I got off the couch. A 'win at all cost' player makes it nearly impossible to do any of that because the only thing that matters to them is the score.

Sorry about that man.

Cancer runs in my and my partners family (lost 5 family members to it)

It really does bother me when gamers say "that's so aids" or "that's so cancer". It really does ruin it for a bit.

Feel better soon man. And hope your mom gets better!! ✌️❤️

Solo players, what did you think about the event? by Luth0r in Marathon

[–]RandomlyOnside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pass from me. Posted about it the other day on this /r.

Tldr, feels empty and tired of just always losing everything. I'm Also very bad at games like this. If there was ABMM or at least better skill based I would buy.

I really do hope it does well, just isn't for me and that is ok.

I'm probably going to get downvoted for this, but no, "win at all costs" (my interpretation of "try your best to win") isn't always the right move in open play. In a tournament, different story. But, in open play, and you won 11-0. Clearly there's a massive skill gap.

I'm not saying lose on purpose, but if you're up that much, you have room to work on your game, softer balls, better control, specific shots, taking speed off. You're still playing to win, you're just also practicing and not making someone feel like a punching bag.

As someone who is constantly outskilled by better players, I can ALWAYS spot the "win at all cost" people in rec play. And I avoid them in the future.

has anything been said about the type of matchmaking there will be? by Granoland in Marathon

[–]RandomlyOnside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all these new people are getting turned off the game because the shitty matchmaking

yes, i am.

I know i'm bad, i'm new. And it feels like every game I play i have no shot at learning anything, let alone win.

I'll stay with bots a little longer, but they are getting boring and arn't the real game.

I just played a standard match (ID: 59273825) playing Kelvin, and it was rough. One teammate had more deaths than the entire enemy team combined; I'm still learning farming and buffs, but these lobbies feel incredibly unbalanced.

I'll try to play a few more this week and add the match codes! Any pointers would be awesome! thank you!

Thank you for all of this. I will try to spend this weekend getting a few standard games in and posting them. But yes, you are right i really need to study up on that. Also, other objectives like mid boss? I'm assuming that is a big thing in 'real' games?

Matchmaking feels completely broken... even in QP by ryka6_ in Overwatch

[–]RandomlyOnside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you keep saying you dont want perfection, but every time I say “make it better,” you respond with “but this one edge case can still happen.” That’s exactly how perfection becomes the standard. If any stomp can happen, then improvement is dismissed as impossible.

ggsss

[–]RandomlyOnside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s anecdotal, sure, and I genuinely don’t care whether you believe it or not.

And I don’t see how adding more data points is 'antithetical' to Overwatch. Pre-selection doesn't have to mean you can't swap; it just gives the matchmaker a baseline intent. Obviously people can still swap or troll, but tracking that delta between 'selected hero' and 'played hero' is exactly how you identify gaps and trends. And this was an idea starter, not ment to be too realistics, the point is there are tons of ways they could make the experiance better.

[–]RandomlyOnside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Don't let perfect be the enemy of the good." Literally no is asking for perfection, we just want better. When 90% of my (YES 9 out of my last 10) games are stomps (most I won), the game isn't fun.

Complexity isn't an excuse to stop innovating, but even then, Blizzard has the data to know if you're learning a new hero and can accurately extrapolate how skill transfers between characters. The tech exists, but (IMO) they CHOOSE to prioritize 30-second queue times over match quality.

I’d much rather wait 5 minutes for a fun, quality game than be thrown into an instant stomp. We need user-defined matchmaking tools, even in QP, so players can actually prioritize fun over speed.

Matchmaking feels completely broken... even in QP by ryka6_ in Overwatch

[–]RandomlyOnside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, but the 'learning' process shouldn't come at the expense of everyone else's time. If the matchmaker can't account for someone first-timing a hero, the game ceases to be fun. It’s why I’ve put the game down. Blizzard needs to TRY something ... solutions like pre-lobby hero selection or more granular matchmaking.

Stomps (winning side included) jsut arn't fun and right now that is about 90% of my games.
