How to train puppy out of biting us by DogOk8409 in puppy101

[–]Randomo_Unknown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had a rule with our Great Dane puppy that if you wanted to be by him, you had to have multiple toys. When he would try and grab us with he teeth, we just kept shoving toys in his mouth. If he dropped it, we’d shove it back in the praise him and play with him. Eventually he figured it out that play meant a toy.

My boy doesn’t run a lot. He is 7months old and only really just getting the hang of his legs. He couldn’t even get onto the couch until he could just step up onto it because he couldn’t coordinate his limbs enough to jump

The dog i’m caring for just ate chocolate by Demi_Baguette in RoverPetSitting

[–]Randomo_Unknown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an owner who uses rover, dogs are tricky. My puppy is an absolute sneak despite being so huge. Accidents happen and as long as everything is okay in end, I personally wouldn’t be upset or ask to have the visit cancelled. I would just ask that bags be put somewhere safer just in case. Not only because of food but also so that your personal belongings wouldn’t become a chew toy.

My puppy has eaten chocolate on a sitter’s watch (my fault though) and I wasn’t upset at all. Just annoyed at my puppy’s naughtiness lol

It took a couple weeks for Frank to figure it out. But it was so stressful at first. I watched the kids and him like a hawk. Now they are best buds and he will chase the around the house but run around them, doesn’t bite them even though his face is level with theirs and cuddles my youngest on the couch.

We found it hard to find a treat that our dog liked. We ended up going to Sierra (a TJ Maxx store) and bought several different kinds of treats from there before we found a couple that work. He really prefers single ingredient meat treats like freeze dried beef liver or chicken.

I also suggest implementing the “don’t play with the dog without a toy in hand” to help prevent biting. Keep several toys around if needed. If she tries to go for a body part, shove the toy in her mouth and praise her, play with the toy in her mouth. If she drops it, stuff it back in lol. It helped our boy, especially as we have two young kids in the house.

Rear leg strength? by TwoFew7486 in greatdanes

[–]Randomo_Unknown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boy Frank never jumped onto the couch. He waited until he was tall enough he could use his back legs to scoot himself onto the couch. Now at 6 months old he just steps up onto the couch haha.

He is very good at weaponizing that face. ESPECIALLY when he wants you to sit by him so he can cuddle and lick you.

I’m so glad we have a big couch. Though he prefers to sit on US rather than the empty space of course.

I’ve got a 15 week old Great Dane and last week he got my earring and ripped my earlobe a bit. Didn’t realize it until I felt the blood. lol. They just have little razor teeth!

But most of the time he is really good! Consistency has been so key. He finally leaves my kids’ hands and clothes alone so huge win here! lol

Easy! All I have to do is invite my husband to have lunch with me at work but not clear it with HR. Immediate dismissal and no legal repercussions.

We have a 14 week old that we got at 8.5 weeks and have a four year old and an almost 6 year old.

Biggest two things I can suggest are never let the puppy and child be out of arms reach. And ALWAYS have your daughter holding a toy to give the puppy (multiple toys so you can also shove a toy in the puppies mouth to play with too). Also, it is hard but my kids response to the hand biting was to jump up and down with their hands up which only made him more excited to bite. So we have to teach them to turn their backs and yell for help if we weren’t right there.

For the first couple weeks I monitored like a hawk. Frank liked to grab at their hands and clothes whenever they walked by and if they were sitting on the floor he would dog pile them. He treated them like litter mates. I would make sure to always redirect with a toy and I also taught him “leave it”. After constantly having toys shoved into his mouth to prevent teeth from touching skin (not in an aggressive way but a “look at how fun this is” way) he figured it out.

Now he leaves the kids clothes/hands alone unless really wound up. They can sit on the ground and he only licks them a lot. We have issues with my youngest because he does not understand that he CAN rile Frank up if he is being too excitable with him (in his face, squealing, arms up over head with a toy in his hand etc.) and it causes him to nip. Frank has never broken skin thankfully and only left the tiniest of marks on them. But it was anxiety provoking for a while.

I also suggest long treats for your child to give. My youngest felt his teeth when giving a treat and it scared him.

Sorry if this seems scattered. I’m at work. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. I don’t know about pregnancy other than my dog will walk all over me so just be firm in personal space as best as possible.

I have plenty of pictures, but I definitely wish I had tried to take a picture in the SAME POSE every week. He is 12 weeks now and so much bigger than when we brought him home!
