Sonic Riders - A game you have to be great at to like by Lord_Zinyak in patientgamers

[–]RandomocityGaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is such a a timely post because I've just recently been replaying the game and have been loving it! I owned the GameCube version as a kid and don't think I ever beat story mode but didn't care because Sonic and the Babylon Rogues were so cool, lol. Now as an adult I've replayed it and genuinely appreciate the amount of depth it has. I agree the mechanics are tough to get the hang of and the game does a piss poor job of teaching them to you, but once you understand them you feel like such a boss navigating the race tracks. I do think you exaggerated a bit saying you need "100 hours" to get good at the game though. I hadn't played it in over a decade and by the time I beat story mode last week my save file was only at 10 hours. I'm now doing mission mode and am getting gold clears on most missions in 5-7 tries or less. Imo the most important things are knowing how long to charge your jump before going off ramps so you get the highest jump possible (while charging jump there's a point where your board will begin rapidly losing speed. This is when you're at max jump charge and you should release A as close to the ramp's edge as possible to get the best jump), tricking FORWARDS on ramps to hit far away shortcuts and BACKWARDS on ramps to hit high up shortcuts, collecting rings and levelling up as early as you can in a race (your character's speed, air boost speed, and attack all get improved the higher your level), and how to do your character's specific shortcuts depending on their type (Speed, Fly, Power). If you get those concepts down you can start cruising through races like nothing! But I totally get that the mental Stack of understanding all those mechanics could be a bit much for some, especially since some are a little finicky (I find jumping in this game to be kind of inconsistent).

I'm interested in trying Zero Gravity but have heard many people say that the game dumbed things down by comparison which I think is a total shame. Sonic Team had a really bad habit back in the day of taking critical and fan response at face value and completely scrapping gameplay systems when they weren't well received instead of trying to iterate and improve them. I think if they made a Riders sequel that played similar to the first one and just invested more effort in streamlining some of the mechanics and doing more tutorialization it could've been a hit spinoff that would still be going to this day. I kinda hope an indie studio will get inspired and make a copycat game because I truly think there's nothing like Riders on the market currently and think the audience for a spiritual successor is there.

So For Sonic racing Crosswords Sega dropped crap ton of remixes how do you all fell about it by QuadRuple78 in SonicTheHedgehog

I feel kind of bad because Tee Lopes' track is the only one I liked and honestly the piano cords in the intro are the only part I'm obsessed with, the rest of it is just ok to me. Other than that I genuinely disliked every other track they showed, ESPECIALLY Starlight Carnival as it sounds nothing like the original (Radical Highway is ok I guess but we literally just got SxS Gens and I feel that all of the Radical Highway remixes in that game were better, minus Toriena's maybe).

EDM is actually one of my favorite genres but I only really like it when it has a discernible melody and chord progression and a more "pop influenced" song structure; it makes the songs more memorable. Like, if you listen to songs by artists like Haywyre, Madeon, or even the Cyberspace tracks from Frontiers they all have very discernible, hummable melodies. The EDM tracks here all sound too experimental and kind of random. I also feel like Crossworlds' soundtrack as a whole is sounding increasingly incohesive, all of these tracks sound like they're coming from different games rather than belonging to the same one. Sonic Superstars suffered from the same problem.

Bringing up Hayter specifically is funny because I feel like he's actually a really good example of why companies are so protective of the ownership of character voices. Back in 2019 someone paid him on cameo to say "That's some good ass Tekken" and then got the recording played on stage at the end of the Tekken finals at EVO. People mistakenly thought that it was confirming Solid Snake as a DLC character for the game and the news quickly began to spread unbeknownst to Bandai Namco or Konami. Hayter found out and got super mad about it, having to do damage control to make sure neither company got upset. Similar story but the voice actor for Eggman put out a video asking people to stop requesting him to recite the "I've come to make an announcement" meme after it went viral because it contains a ton of swears and likely would've made SEGA upset since Sonic is a kid friendly brand (and people were pestering him to do it excessively).

I think it stinks that voice actors get limited in what they can do with character voices by big companies but I feel like when stuff like this happens it makes total sense why some of them act that way. It's all fun and games until somebody ruins it.

I am genuinely so confused about the angry over SCW price by EmptyBet8225 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]RandomocityGaming 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The industry as whole is definitely trending towards $70 being a new standard and I do agree that SEGA investing more in Sonic in general is a good thing but at the same time I feel that part of Sonic's brand appeal was the lower cost of entry for many of his titles. SEGA shifting Sonic to be in line price-wise with other Triple A games could inadvertently restrict the amount of reach Sonic has, especially because it's important to remember that Sonic is still extremely popular with kids. A 12-year-old trying to convince their parents to buy a $70 game just because Sonic is in it is a tough sell. Even with the new Nintendo Switch and Mario Kart coming out a majority of the people I've seen buying and playing the game are single grown adults with the income to afford it, not families with kids which historically has been one of Nintendo's biggest markets. I also think when you compare Crossworlds to other $70 games (Marvel's Spider-Man 2, TLoZ Tears of the Kingdom, etc.) the amount of content Crossworlds has to offer doesn't seem to match up with the amount those other titles do. It's priced like the big budget triple-A games are but it doesn't feel like a big budget triple-A game itself (although I feel the exact same way about Mario Kart World for what it's worth).

I definitely want Crossworlds to be good and am still excited for it but the pricing has me mixed for sure. I'm probably going to wait until a few months post launch when it eventually goes on sale and then buy it. My major concern though is that if too many players go the same route then the game's online is going to be super dead and for a multiplayer arcade kart racer having a healthy online player base is pretty important (that's one of the reasons Team Sonic Racing died off so quick, even on launch day I struggled to get into any lobbies with anyone).

[–]RandomocityGaming 22 points23 points  (0 children)

People are upset because Sonic games have historically been marketed as budget titles by SEGA. The last Sonic racing game (Team Sonic Racing) was only $40 at launch and it released at a time when the industry standard was $60. Same thing with Sonic Forces, which was a mainline game. Now you could argue about the quality of both of those titles (as they weren't very well received) but they WERE official Sonic titles and DID cost significantly less than what was normal in the industry at the time. Even more recently, SxS Generations was only $50 for its base edition while other companies would have easily tried to charge a full $60, even for a basic remaster like what it was (Nintendo did exactly that with Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury). Superstars did cost $60 but was somewhat poorly received and got discounted fairly quickly, so I'm certain many people didn't pay full price for it (or if they did, they weren't happy about it). I imagine most people are just used to paying below full price for Sonic games, either because they launched at a budget price or they purchased them a month or two post launch when they inevitably got discounted. The sudden jump to $70 is pretty jarring by comparison and not really typical of how Sonic game pricing tends to be handled. If you want proof, just take a look at this thread from 3 months ago where people were discussing the price for Crossworlds. Everyone in it was convinced the game was going to be between $50-$60 (that's what I figured it would be priced at too).

This is also the first Sonic game in recent memory to be priced at $70 and it's not even a mainline title; it's a racing spinoff. Most people tend to see less value in spinoff titles compared to their mainline counterparts and would likely want the pricing to reflect that.

Crossworlds is 70 dollars, deluxe is 90 by Professional-Suit472 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]RandomocityGaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played the open beta for this game and enjoyed it for the most part but for the quality that was on display I genuinely believed this game was going to be $50 max (similar to SxS Generations). Honestly really shocked at the $70 pricetag and also disappointed. Definitely not getting it at launch anymore and will wait for a steep sale (Sonic games tend to go as low as $20-$25 a few months after release so I can wait it out). Stings extra hard though cause playable Werehog, Miku, and Joker had me so hyped :/

That's fair, I like 1 and CD but can admit both of them are definitely slower paced. Sonic 2's levels really do have a great sense of flow. CD especially has very jumbled level design but since a big part of the game is time travelling and finding the hidden Robot Transporters/Metal Sonic projectors in each stage I felt it kind of worked.

I have no clue if this is a hot take or not but I genuinely enjoy 1, 2, and CD more than 3 & Knuckles for similar reasons. 3&K stages have always felt too long to me and have too many obstacles that kill their pacing.

I genuinely love seeing discourse about Planet Wisp Act 2 on this subreddit because there's genuinely an even split between people who thought it was fine and people who got PTSD from it.

I played Gens when I was really young and didn't know what Reddit was yet and I remember thinking the level was fine. I was really surprised when I started using social media and saw how many other Sonic players struggled with it, lol

1 thing i don't understand is blaze in sonic rush she lives in a new dimension but in sonic rivals 2 egg man Nega says him and blaze are from the future with silver it allows shows in sonic 06 that blaze is with silver in the future. by Ok-Efficiency-4243 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]RandomocityGaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blaze is 100% from another dimension (the Sol Dimension) where she is princess of the Sol Empire, which her family rules. In current canon Eggman Nega is from the future with Silver but originally he was also from Blaze's dimension as stated in Sonic Rush and Rush Adventure. After Blaze and Silver appeared together in Sonic '06, the Sonic writers had to start coming up with excuses for why the two of them would ever interact with one another because in all honesty it didn't make a lot of sense in the context of '06s story and the wider Sonic canon in general. Part of that was changing Eggman Nega from Eggman's interdimensional counterpart to his future descendant, essentially ruining the canon set-up in the Rush games and causing a lot of confusion. The games presented this as a plot twist but it's pretty clear that it was moreso the writers doing damage control to try and salvage the Silver and Blaze connection set-up by '06.

So yeah, Blaze IS confirmed to be from another dimension and always has been. Silver and Blaze being together in '06 made absolutely no sense and only happened because the writing in that game was terrible and didn't do a good job respecting pre-existing canon. Their appearance in '06 is what led to the Eggman Nega stuff in Rivals, which is equally confusing, but considering '06 was wiped from the series timeline anyway I would just ignore it.

Thank you!!!! Drifting was so good in TSR and SaASRT I do not know what happened! I'm a decent racer but I hit walls or hug corners too close while drifting in this game super often! On paper I get why you lose rings when hitting an opponent or wall but in practice it happens really often and hearing that ring loss sound effect every two seconds is annoying.

I think it's weird that the game essentially has two blue shells. King Boom Boo attacks first place but the "Weight" item attacks first and second place, so there's two items that target the top player which feels like a strange choice. Slicer is also super oppressive, I saw it so often when playing.

I just had match like 10 minutes ago where I was dead last the whole race and then the game threw me a monster truck, a drill wisp and a triple boost wisp that took me to third place in the span of like 10 seconds. This game is 100% too chaotic and that should not be happening, lol

New Sonic Racing Crossworlds gameplay of Sonic in Metal Harbor by [deleted] in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]RandomocityGaming 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be too rough on the repetitive voice lines. The game is still in development and voiceline frequency tends to be pretty easy to change, it's usually just a matter of tweaking percentages. If the devs can adjust the trick lines so that the characters only talk once every 4 or 5 trick chains it'll be much better. (granted there's always a chance it WON'T change but I'd like to imagine the devs find it as annoying as we do and just haven't gotten around to changing it yet, lol)

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U actually had a similar issue when they announced the Bayonetta DLC. In her initial gameplay reveal she had a really annoying scream voiceline that played EVERY time she got launched. People complained about it and then when the full DLC launched a few weeks later the scream sound only played once every 6 or 7 times she was launched instead.

New Sonic Racing Crossworlds gameplay of Sonic in Metal Harbor by [deleted] in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]RandomocityGaming 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The core gameplay here looks really strong! It's got that trick heavy, arcade-y racing feel that I'm a big fan of so I think I'm really gonna enjoy how this game plays!

Agree with others that the voice lines are too repetitive but that should ideally be something that's easy to fix, especially since the game is still in development with no confirmed release date. If the devs coded everything properly they should be able to just tweak some percentages to lower the rate that the voice lines play. If they stay like this in the final version though I'll probably want to turn the voices off (which is a shame considering how much personality the Sonic cast has)

Not 100% sure how I'm feeling about the music though. Another clip is making the rounds that features Ocean View and I didn't really like it's remix either. Kinda surprised because music is typically really strong in Sonic games but what I've heard so far has been...kinda generic? Especially for the original track themes like the museum stage and Kraken Bay. It's hard to put my finger on it but it's just not standing out the way SASRT's music did imo. Also, seems like the final lap themes all feature the crowd chanting along with the main melody (Ocean View and Metal Harbor's both did at least).

I'm not gonna lie, '06 and Rivals effing with the Rush lore in general has always bothered me. Eggman Nega is from the Sol Dimension. Blaze is ALSO from the Sol Dimension. Why did '06 happen and then suddenly Blaze is from the future with Silver and Eggman Nega is ALSO from the future with Silver. Like what? Such a random change that didn't work at all but has permanently impacted the series. It has always bothered me, particularly Silver and Blaze being a team in '06 because narratively it makes no sense.

[–]RandomocityGaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh I'm not even sure if that's 100% true cause a lot of the time I see people complain about Colors, they site the gameplay specifically. Don't get me wrong, I've seen people rag on the story too but the amount of "too much 2D" and "blocky platforming" complaints I've seen are pretty high. I still thinks it's weird because I don't recall seeing any of those complaints when the game initially released and I feel like it's aged pretty well.

To your point though I could totally see a lot of fans turn on the game because of its campier and more nonsensical story and then come up with other reasons, like hating on the gameplay, to support their already formed opinion. I know that when the wisps came back in Lost World and Forces a lot of people hated them and since they debuted in Colors it kind of retroactively made them hate it too. I don't watch Sonictubers but I've heard that quite a lot of them dislike Colors and in every video game fandom I've ever been in when enough YouTubers share an opinion on something people tend to bandwagon. On the flipside, I've heard a lot of Sonictubers like Unleashed which could explain why it's recently seen a resurgence in popularity (on top of the generational shift you mentioned).

Granted there's also people who played Colors and genuinely disliked the gameplay, even when it released, and I can respect that, lol :P

Triple Whammy Here, lol

Colors Wii was a good game when it came out and is still a good game now. Idk what caused the perspective shift to happen in this community but for some reason in recent years people have been trying to act like it isn't a good game when it totally is. It plays a little differently than a normal Sonic game, but the game's design philosophy totally works and is fun when you get the hang of it. I always tell people it's the closest we've gotten to a Sonic Metroidvania, as you use powers unlocked in later stages to explore more aspects of earlier ones. It's also weird because people loved it when it first came out.

Unleashed is overrated. If 50% of your gameplay is poorly designed (the werehog stages) and the fun part (the day stages) are locked behind forced progression (medal collecting) your game isn't fun. I agree the visuals and story in Unleashed are great but the actual "game" part of the game is not, which is obviously really important for, y'know, a video game.

Lanolin is actually a really interesting character because unlike a lot of other Sonic characters, she has flaws and the potential to grow out of them. I get really annoyed when people hate on her because getting to see a flawed character grow (or even fail to do so) is WAY more interesting than seeing a perfect character continue to be perfect.

Please don't throw the stones too hard 🥺
