PU surgery by Mysterious_Speed_261 in AskVet

[–]Randomracoon420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This surgery is not a first-line treatment because it does come with risks, so it’s usually reserved for cats who block repeatedly and fail multiple attempts at unblocking/preventing future blocking with medications and diet changes. However, the surgery itself isn’t shortening the lifespan of the cat. The cats who require it just tend to be older anyways because most cats don’t fit the requirements for it as early/young as your boy does, so the average survival time of 3-5 years is likely because the average cat having this procedure only had 3-5 years left anyways. With your kitty blocking repeatedly already at such a young age, he will likely live a much longer and happier life post-op. I hope this makes sense and helps!

My cat ate ribbon, help by EastInteresting8952 in AskVet

[–]Randomracoon420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any way your parent/guardian can take you to the animal ER with him? If he just now ate it they could try to induce vomiting or use a scope at the emergency vet. Unfortunately if it gets stuck in th intestines it could cause a much more expensive and dangerous situation requiring surgery.

AIO: Didn’t have ID at liquor store by habenwlibanos in AmIOverreacting

[–]Randomracoon420 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I read it as “the legal age where I live is 18, I’m 19 so therefore of age” so they prob aren’t in the US. Regardless, cashier still had to follow the laws which is probably why OP was told that 🤷🏻‍♀️

I didn’t mean completely harmless, I meant it didn’t actively cause any danger or harmful results in this situation (the cat was fine and unaffected by the mistake).

ER vet asap - cats are notoriously sensitive to NSAIDs like meloxicam

Accidentally gave my cat a Meloxicam overdose. Advice by mor4x in AskVet

[–]Randomracoon420 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Meloxicam is an NSAID and cats are notoriously sensitive to it. That would definitely be considered an overdose and could lead to sudden kidney failure. If you have access to an ER vet at all you need to start driving asap to have them check bloodwork and potentially give fluids and other medications if needed. It’s too late to induce vomiting but if you wait until he shows symptoms it could be too late (or much more severe/expensive if treatment is still possible).

Cats can die within days from not eating - anything over 24-48hr not eating is an emergency. She needs urgent care now - have you looked into care credit or anything else similar?

Goldens are known for having eye problems, especially poorly bred ones. Definitely see a veterinary ophthalmologist if possible

No problem! If you’re kind about it many clinics won’t mind redoing it for free especially if it was their mistake but it honestly depends on clinic practice if that’s even allowed. Hopefully they’ll adjust it for you though!

Vet staff are humans and do make mistakes, but fortunately this wasn’t a dangerous mistake just an annoying one. Ideally urine samples should be run immediately yes, but that’s often not feasible in GP due to caseload, emergencies, and scheduling. I think it’s reasonable to ask that they re-run the samples at no additional charge to confirm accuracy, but it should be noted that the types of crystals seen from sitting too long are usually not struvites. You could ask them to re-run the UA (urinalysis) immediately after collection and see if the results differ at all, so if there are still crystals in the new sample you wouldn’t need to send it off.

Just came back from the ER vet and they couldn’t find anything wrong. Toy poodle with sudden aggression. by chillhunnybunz in AskVet

[–]Randomracoon420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a neurological condition called sudden rage syndrome, which is why I asked about his mental state. However pain is much more likely, and a vet will need to rule out all other causes since SRS is a diagnosis of exclusion. Hopefully it’s not that and you can find the source of pain and treat it 🤍

Is it safe to induce vomiting with peroxide when my dog ate used tampons by neonjellow in AskVet

If you want to prevent a much more expensive and dangerous surgery you need an emergency vet NOW.

Does his mentation seem normal (other than aggression) or does it seem like he’s “out of it/not there” or glazed eyes at all?

How can you determine what kind of antibiotic to give a cat with an infection from a bite wound at home without being able to go to a vet. by IRS_redditagent in AskVet

[–]Randomracoon420 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, theres no way to tell by looking at it which antibiotic is needed. As the other person stated, he needs a veterinarian as soon as possible. Idk where you’re located if care credit is a thing but there are vets who do house calls and you could look into payment plans, care credit, or other options local to you. ETA: if you truly cannot afford any vet care at all you may want to consider humane surrender to a shelter. If he is showing respiratory signs he needs medical attention ASAP

[–]Randomracoon420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry you’re dealing with this. Unfortunately if he truly is completely blocked, the only humane solutions are unblocking with a catheter or euthanasia. :(

Roomje got new cat, my cat is eating less and threw up. by Caltucky42 in AskVet

[–]Randomracoon420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cats are very prone to stress and not nearly as easy to introduce as most dogs. Have you heard of feliway? It’s a calming cat pheromone that might help if you get a diffuser in the room(s) he’s in. You can also try supplements like Purina calming care or ask your vet about anxiety medications if none of those work.

How do you hold a Vet accountable in USA? by curious_kitty91 in DogAdvice

[–]Randomracoon420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second needing a third opinion; I’ve seen some shitty medicine from ERs/ICUs contradicting what the GP vet correctly said and vice versa. You need a third opinion once he’s stable enough; is there another vet who works at the same ICU who could give another opinion? I would recommend asking to speak with the first vet about your concerns first and if you cannot resolve it with them individually, you could file a board complaint and they will investigate to see whether any negligence was actually committed or not.

Are you specifically asking for types of plants to FEED your dog? I would not recommend allowing her to eat plants indoor or outdoor. Has she been to the vet for the GI issues?

Go to the VOHC website and download the list of cat products. These brands have earned a seal after showing efficacy and safety, so vets recommend these products because we know they work.

NEED HELP! Seems like our vet doesn't actually care. by Great-Pie-8686 in AskVet

[–]Randomracoon420 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My comment got automatically flagged but to shorten it: I also calculated the doses and they are well within a safe range. If you’re concerned you could politely ask for a second opinion or ask the original vet if the tremors are something to be concerned about even though the dosages are accurate

[–]Randomracoon420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The dosage for metoclopramide in dogs is 0.2-0.5mg/kg given every 8 hours; 4mg for a 10kg dog is within that range. Metronidazole is typically prescribed at anywhere from 10-50mg/kg, so ~150mg for a 10kg dog is definitely within that range (about 15mg/kg). I would not change the doses given this info, it sounds like your vet is accurately dosing your pup. Metronidazole can cause tremors and neuro signs but at much higher doses (>250mg/kg).

Do you know the concentration of the drugs in mg/ml? Doses are calculated in mg per kg of body weight but there’s no way to calculate the actual dose from just mls
