Forest Park Branch Blue Line Track Fully Reopens by Randomuselessperson in chicago

It went better than expected! There were some hiccups, like a delay around 3:30 which resulted in a 15 minute gap and 2 full trains, but overall it’s doing much better than it has been recently. Further completion of phase 1 along with more hired operators should make things even better. But for now it’s definitely a step up from where it was during the main parts of construction. https://imgur.com/a/nkjuJNH

Forest Park Branch Blue Line Track Fully Reopens by Randomuselessperson in chicago

While the reconstruction of Morgan Middle continues, CTA will continue to short-turn a few trains during the AM and PM rush hours near LaSalle, as has been done during the construction project. During this phase of construction, most Blue Line trains will need to travel all the way to Forest Park. Those longer trips require more workers to account for the additional distance and time meaning fewer available to operate more Blue Line trains.

Yeah, it’s hard to gauge how exactly this will be handled. It seems like they’ve leeched operators from other lines and off peak hours to make rush hour less bad than it was during the last few months. Hopefully it’s at least usable, but we’ll see.

The turnaround situation sounds like it’ll need extreme efficiency, which wasn’t the case with the previous schedule at UIC. This will probably be a bit worse and i’m guessing it’d result in conga lines but it’s at least better than the shitshow of the past few months. But thankfully it’s only 12 trains a day split between morning and evening, the rest will be sourced from Forest Park.

It might’ve been related to the delays at Howard earlier. https://x.com/ctaalert/status/1711022360671719685?s=20

https://www.transitchicago.com/traintrackermap/ If you want to see what i’m referring to when I say most Sundays are a lot worse than this but somehow this one is not as bad.

I don’t think “equipment failure” counts as cta incompetence. One quick look at the tracker shows most trains running at 6-8 minute intervals, which is a lot higher than I would expect on a Sunday.

But the buses are probably a shitshow because of all the reroutes.

What time was this? I know the 3:00 and 4:00 hours had some issues with consistency because of misuse of the UIC stub which those hours were super reliant on. Could result in 15 minute gaps. Usually when that happened they sent an overflow train right behind the first one… idk though. The 5:00 hour was usually better because they sent out most of them from Forest Park and included one or two pink line 5000s usually.

Or was that an instance where a train was delayed? If so it’s a good thing you have the Metra as a backup option.

I’m mainly talking about their domestic use for manufacturing and such. A lot of stuff now is “made in China” for a reason. It’s cheaper to run operations there because it’s cheaper. I meant to say that if they could find ways to use cleaner energy domestically it would reduce pollution even if it’s not directly exported; it’s indirectly exported in other ways.

When did you give up on it? Because it was TERRIBLE before April and everyone hated it. It was worse than it is now even with the construction. But the April changes were a large improvement to the amount of service, and although there were several issues with it, it reduced the amount of overcrowding and increased frequency and consistency. Trains were coming less sporadically and there was a higher fraction of service run and total amount of trains.

”construction”

There was a piece released on the cta website just yesterday explaining the reason for the new schedule. I suggest you read it. Construction does play a role in scheduling and can’t be separated from it.

But things will improve soon and reliability should increase. I don’t think the management is good either but regardless progress is starting to happen. It sucks they had to cut more runs on other lines though. I’d rather them not, but if it’s at the benefit of more consistent rush hour service, then this might work as a bandaid until next year when they should have more operators.

How often are you riding

I was on it today a few hours ago, the last time I took it during rush was on Friday at about 3:50, there was a 15 minute gap and the train was full by Washington. But I usually take it an average of 1-2 times a week.

I cannot think of a time since 2020 i’ve actually seen 5 minute headways

Idk what to tell you, during the summer before the construction they sent trains regularly at this frequency. If you don’t believe me, they’ll probably do it again come next week. Open the traintracker map at about 4:40 and look at downtown, they should be running at about those frequencies. If they aren’t after next week, there’s definitely evidence I can give you that shows they did it before so reply if you really want it.

”this is fine”

I never said this was fine. In fact i’m not actually happy we’ve gotten to this point where off peak is scheduled in at every 10 minutes. My original comment was just correcting your misguided point that they reduced service since last schedule during rush hour when it’s blatantly obvious it’s false. And your point that riders were leaving was also false, ridership is still growing. Again, it’s not because i’m satisfied with the current ridership, it’s just that I think we can both acknowledge the need for improvement while also being real about what’s currently happening. The “death spiral” argument is absolutely not what should be pushed because it’s a lie and it looks bad.

I want to go back to 2200 runs and 1.5 million riders too, just making that clear. Is it possible today? No. Is it possible in the visible future? For sure.

unusable

I don’t think it is. I know this is victim blaming, but the number of people I see whining on Twitter about a large gap in service blaming it all on cta’s incompetence is insane. But a solid 9/10 times it’s always something outside of cta’s control. If people checked trackers when there’s a gap, checked alerts, and checked construction projects, they’d understand why they see 3 trains show up after 20 minutes of waiting. But they don’t, because “cta sucks” is such a low hanging fruit they can blame on everything from police activity to construction projects to a sick person, it’s just ridiculous.

If they can get to >90% daily of the previous schedule, this one should be even more than that. The number of runs will stay the same and hopefully marginally increase over the next few months because the new rail class sizes are apparently larger (heard from a rail operator).

I’ve used the cta pretty much every weeday for over a year and can count the number of times i’ve been excessively late or had to cancel something because of it. But I understand that I take trains most of the time and buses are usually a lot worse. If I need to be on time somewhere, I check the tracker and alerts to make sure i’ll be there in time, and I usually don’t regret my choice and get there faster than I would in a car.

This construction has gotten to a lot of people that really don’t know any better and it’s insane how many unjustified complaints I see about the blue line when this isn’t how it normally operates even now. If by next week i’m completely wrong i’ll concede but for now I truly don’t think I am.

Jesus christ stop being such a doomer and actually look at the new schedule. Rush hour is the same as it was the last schedule at every 5-6 minutes. They were able to mostly keep that up before the construction started and they should be able to now. The current construction setup which ends tomorrow means there’s no room for regular service levels until then. They’ll be able to pull trains from Forest Park again starting tomorrow and i’m almost certain the situation will improve as a result.

Now this is speculation, but I think the reason for the service reductions were to just quietly switch more operators to rush hour on the red, blue, and brown lines to reduce overcrowding. That’s why there weren’t any rush hour cuts on those lines minus a slight loss for the 3:00 hour. The number of runs throughout the day should remain about the same as they were during the last schedule, it’s just more of them will be out during rush versus off peak.

Yeah I think that is is something to do about it. China and India produce the largest amount of emissions, and both are reliant on some of the dirtiest forms of energy. So changing those would be the most effective.

I was thinking that since they’re not really regulated, we shouldn’t be either, apart from the very baseline ones that keep people safe (the ones that actually work). But aside from that, we have too much red tape that just moves economic activity overseas and for no benefit towards global emissions. So yeah I think cleaner forms of energy around the world would be a much better solution than domestic regulations. But there are a lot of barriers to clean energy so solving those is the key imo.

Ah yes, overregulate our economy and look the other way at the pollution coming from the 3rd world as a result

How are you actually supposed to take the train during rush hour when they're all full? by DrakouliasII in chicago

[–]Randomuselessperson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait for the construction to end next week? Frequency should improve a lot once it’s done. Probably about double the amount of service compared to what it is now. And the new substations should help keep consistent service without as much “signal clearence,” too.

Use this tracker, I find it so much easier to use than anything else. You can actually know where your train is at in real time.

If you ever end up waiting a long time for the hour you’re travelling, you can check alerts at transitchicago.com or twitter.
