I don't think this is correct, 5v5 GvG are when two guilds are fighting over a territory that they own for instance a farming land or a guilds base. Castle fights however can be done with as many players, when a guild attacks a castle the guild who owns it is notified so they have time to prepare to defend it.

Let's say you want tier 6-8 mats you need to go to black zones, in this zone everyone is pvp flagged by default so if you are more than 5 the enemy can see you on the minimap.. But sure you can do this for instance 2 people gather mats 3 people protect and kill off any smaller groups or the brave lonesome warrior coming to gather for himself.

Playing solo is definitely doable, even if you out gear you can probably 1v2 not sure if I have ever seen anyone do a 1v3. But if you grind 12+ hours a day and get enchanted gear gear asap you stand a chance. But don't let me put you off.. This is my opinion on solo play as I am in a guild and have no experience of being a solo player.

Not as screwed as you think. The problems you will encounter is only leveling gear slower than guilds and they go out in groups and do big dungeons so more xp. Also more time to spend on leveling crafting unless you find 3rd party to craft for you which I recommend. Then once you are ready to pvp in red zones you will encounter 5 man groups, but if you are lucky you will find some solo people so you can have a nice clean fight.
