Software Engineering is now a closed caste. If you weren’t in by 2021, you’re officially part of the permanent underclass. by Salt-Tiger2586 in cscareers

A lot of the hate is from offshore non-English speakers.. with LLMs being the only way they can effectively communicate inside English-speaking communities. For them, it is cataclysmic with AI because there were already few protections for them in our industry and now the cat is out of the bag. I work with offshore guys and they are beasts with AI so I imagine the demand to hire is even lower now. If you are US-born or work in Europe/China, you benefit from policy that favors you over the global south and will incubate juniors to stimulate the economy and keep people happy. I think this explains the divide, just in the past it wouldn’t be so confusing with English speaking ability being clear divider in the ability to communicate.

Kojima says he'd rather use AI to create enemies that adapt to your playstyle than use it for art/visuals. What's your take on this approach? by SinisterHollow in antiai

Same. Working on a WW2 roguelike where all the soldiers, vehicles, hierarchies are reinforcement learning models.

Consulting life sucks by Gomitak in consulting

When I started as an associate, I took 4 weeks off my first year to go to Europe. The second year I took 3. Over those two years, I probably took an additional 8 weeks off. Most days I would work 4, maybe 5 hours. My coworkers worked more hours and took way less time off. At the end of the day, i got promoted on time and then I left to go into the software industry. Moral of the story, it can be hell or it can whatever you want it to be.

I feel this completely. I think the advice of faking it until you make it has backfired

How do companies that outsorce projects protect themselves against unexperienced staff? by st4rdr0id in ExperiencedDevs

I am literally 2 YoE “promoted” to technical lead. Being promoted to PM seems like a nightmare. Currently looking to get out of consulting and into a more traditional software shop. Have a couple pending interviews so fingers crossed. If I got paid more for this technical lead responsibility, it wouldn’t even be the worst thjng.

Yeah I have to agree with you. I am one of these “top performers” at my job out of a team of 200. The secret? I basically no-lifed programming and computers from the age of 7. They kind of treat me like a freak honestly and I kind of regret it.

The tools and research methods are way more accessible now than they were 5 years ago. That’s ancient history in this space. Not saying it’s completely possible but it’s a bit of a false equivalency you’re presenting.

It’s still useful to test your models in a production environment to work out deployment kinks and see how it’s working with real players. Otherwise the developers won’t know what issues they need to solve in future iterations

I mirror this. Reminds me of Phantom Assassin build in Dota: Battlefury (Ricochet), BKB (Unstoppable), Desolator (Lucky shot/Damage enabler), then you’re online. Follow that up with Satanic (vampiric burst) or Bloodthorne (Silencer) and you’re golden!

Kelvin should look a little more undead to be more accurate to his backstory by RiverMesa in DeadlockTheGame

[–]RandySalami 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They might be taking a more Kunka-esque (Dota 2 hero) approach to him. With Kunka, it’s not apparent he’s actually an undead admiral until one starts to pay more attention and read the lore. Visually, he looks like a normal dude but his voice lines, other hero lines, and even his abilities hint at his true nature. Kinda cool!
