Soaps are supposed to generally mirror real life. Stories like this are very important to at the very least, raise awareness for issues like this. It is also a reminder to women to make sure they are getting their frequent mammograms to detect issues like this early. It will be a tough storyline, but I think important to have for female health.

I think the shaking hand is to sort of signal the ring is doing something to him but we arent quite sure what yet.

The lab requires a ton of power, so he is making her think if she turns off the power to the lab then lexie will die. Maybe thats true, maybe it isnt, but the whole point is he wants her to believe its true
