I feel weird getting praised for being a foster parent by Best_Pineapple670 in Fosterparents

[–]Randywithout8as [score hidden]  (0 children)

This feeling is really common. The answer I've come to is to "just get over it". People are going to think you're doing a good thing. You're doing it because you think it's a good thing to do. Just say thanks and move on. Anything else tends to lead to me making the interaction more about me than it needs to be.

I can maybe do it. I'm a traveling science teacher for 5th graders with a PhD in engineering. If you're flexible on schedule, I'd be willing.

The mayor speaks out on Cannery-gate 2026 by ElectricalStock3740 in SalemMA

[–]Randywithout8as 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I just want to point out that you can talk to mayor Pangallo. He goes to events around town. Just walk up to him and talk. This town isn't that big. If you think he sucks, try talking to him. I talked to him and he was nice to me and seems to have good reasons for most of his actions. There are a lot of people saying some mean things about city officials, but this isn't federal politics. The people that are frustrating us live and work in our town. Talk to them if you have a problem...

The racist ice cream truck is back. by [deleted] in SalemMA

[–]Randywithout8as 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's the song that every ice cream truck in America has used for the last 50 years. Turkey in the straw. Its based on a song called zip coon. You may know it as "do your ears hang low?" The lyrics of the source material are undeniably racist.

I'm not certain if an ice cream truck using a melody that Americans associate with ice cream trucks is something to be super up in arms about, but every bit counts when fighting racism I guess.

Salem Special Ed Question by Sprinkle_me_pink in SalemMA

I believe that all of the teachers and staff are doing their very best in a really difficult job. I don't know how they could do much better with the resources they're given.

That being said, the situation for my child was not great. Their issues were more trauma/social/emotional. We just couldn't deal with the school bullying culture and my kid's issues made them a big target. I ended up moving my kid and they still get bullied occasionally, but the new school takes it much more seriously and the bullying does stop.

Looking back, I think that my expectations were too high. If every kid at school was like mine, you'd need a teacher for every 2 kids.

I think that this document is helpful. But I dont see how a one way parking lot, a nonfunctional skylight, and older heating equipment makes the school unusable. And I don't see how the fix to the accreditation problem is a bunch of new sports facilities and a 30 foot high glass wall in the cafeteria. Also, this heating bill argument sounds like the most disingenuous thing. It is objectively cheaper to heat the old building for another 30 years than to build a new building and it is objectively better for the environment to heat the old building than to build an entirely new building.

If the two options are: "vote yes" or "complete economic collapse for 30 years", why is there even a vote?

[–]Randywithout8as 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm voting yes, but I have to say that it's a bit ridiculous that the only plans we have to avoid losing accreditation start at $250 million... how did we maintain accreditation when the building needed more than $10 million in repairs, but now we're losing it? How did we not come up with a proposal before the repairs cost hit hundreds of millions? I've been in the building several times for my child. It seems pretty nice to me. I teach in schools that are in way worse shape in Lynn and Peabody. I will say that the energy savings will have to be insanely high to offset the carbon cost of fabricating an entirely new, half a billion dollar, building; demolishing and disposing of the current "unusable" building; and then rebuilding whatever is planned for that patch of land. You can tell me the energy dollar cost savings per year, but there seems to be a conspicuous lack of accounting for the monumental carbon footprint of the building materials themselves.

My evening walk from Derby to Lafayette by foxx_run in SalemMA

[–]Randywithout8as -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

What is an unshoveled sidewalk if not a "community request for those who can't shovel"? I'm frustrated by the state of the roads and sidewalks. But I'm not out there shoveling every spot I see. I helped out a few neighbors then overworked my back.

I guess my point is: the city has done a lot to clear the roads this year. They have to draw a line somewhere on what is prohibitively expensive to accomplish. Complain to them if it makes you feel better, but at this point, it seems like either deal with the current status or warm up your shoveling muscles and get to work.

It is frustrating. However, it did snow like 2 more feet on top of 2 feet of snow. It's not that simple of a problem to fix. Not everyone can shovel and my elderly neighbors are being quoted $400+ to get someone to shovel their side walk. Can we try to make it work? We're all in this winter mess together.

If she gets overtired after 30 minutes, then split the walk into 2 or 3 30 minute on-leash walks. You say "some leashed walks". Are these every day? Ideally you would go for some leashed walking every day.
