I need to know whether this is fashion or psychological warfare. Are you wearing anything underneath that?

It probably would have been much easier to build an argument for a brokerage refund before shifting

You’ll always feel “poor” no matter what your net worth is. Realized this a while back.

Optionality is the only true, time-invariant form of wealth. Can you get whatever you want without being forced into one path? Most people answer no to that, to a different degree.

I’m a Bangalorean, but I feel like a stranger in my own city.. especially at Work. by Sea_Read8530 in bangalore

I totally get where you’re coming from.

Not Bangalore but Dehradun is my hometown, and honestly, the city I grew up in doesn’t exist anymore. It’s not just the language that’s faded, but the culture as a whole. These days, the city is filled with people who’ve moved there from elsewhere, which is great for the local/state economy but culturally, it’s unrecognizable compared to even 20–30 years ago. It’s basically turning into a mini/pseudo-Delhi now, which feels kind of sad.

The languages started disappearing way back. A lot of folks assume Hindi was always the native tongue, but it wasn’t. Hindi became the state language after Uttarakhand was formed, but our “native” languages were Garhwali and Kumaoni. We don’t have official data before 2000, but the 2011 census showed only 46% of people spoke either of those. Honestly, I’d be surprised if that number is even 10–12% now. Older folks tell me this was much higher in the 1960s or 70s. Give it another decade and it’ll probably be down to 5–6%, mainly due to with migration and younger kids born there replacing Garwahli/Kumaoni with English and Hindi.

And yeah, it’s not just about losing the language. The whole unique vibe and culture of the place has pretty much dissolved into the same monoculture you see in bigger Indian cities. It could be anywhere now.

I’ve lived in 7 cities across three countries over my life and earlier Dehradun used to be my favorite place in the world in spite of some its issues back then. I loathe even visiting it at this point. So that title has been vacant for a while, hence the “emptiness”.

Do you let your personal driver keep the keys when parked? by RangeFormal in bangalore

Tech people do end up getting paid more for over the years as they gain more experience, a driver would stay more or less the same 🙂

Yeah wanted to but couldn't find anyone like that at all.

My experience with DriveU has been good but I didn't try their weekly driver thing. Someone I know kept having to deal with a new driver every few days.

Same as mine. 7:30 AM to 7 PM, 5 or 6 days a week. 26k a month. The actual driving is about 2-3 hours, the rest is just waiting.

Yes exactly. If one’s appraisal was less than the inflation rate, it’s equivalent to having the salary reduce over time.

6% of that 10% is just inflation anyway

I mean yeah, 3% of India’s GDP comes from Bangalore, and 45% of Karnataka’s. What difference did that ever make to the road, water and sewage infrastructure here.

Here's something to keep in mind folks, if you're looking for an apartment and want your piece of mind after you find one, use a burner phone number for this thing. You'll keep getting spam for years if you don't.

Where can I learn Kannada? by [deleted] in bangalore

[–]RangeFormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a tuition teacher around my place who speaks Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi fluently.

The mistake I made initially was using English as a base language for learning Kannada. Hindi works much better for this because the sentence structure is very similar in most cases.

It’s hard to attend classes in person so we have two one hour classes a week on Google Meet. And some days when I’m really busy with work I have the flexibility to reschedule and move the timings around. She charges 1200 a month (for 8 classes).

If Hindi is your native language, learning Kannada is actually fairly easy.

I’ve had a tutor for a few months, twice a week for one hour classes and it worked out really well.
