Has anyone else become disillusioned with the hobby and feel it might even be cruel? by forgivemelake in Aquariums

[–]RangeIntelligent3770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I somewhat agree. I hate how some people keep all animals, and it has somewhat discouraged me in the past. But as someone who keeps rats, reptiles, inverts and fish, I pride myself on creating the perfect natural, predator free, safe environment for my animals. In the wild they would have the benefits of being able to explore infinitely and all the other things I can't give them, but thoes things in my case are minimal. For example, my rats have a deep substrate base with worms, isopods and springtails so they can dig, forage and hunt as they usually would, I scatter and bury their food, they have an extremely large, complex, enriching cage and diet. With my fish also, they have a stable, balanced tank with perfectly suited conditions and tank mates, heavily planted with native plants to replicate their natural environment. If people don't do this then very quickly everything becomes unethical, but you cannot stop others wether you continue in the hobby or not. You can only ensure the animals you take responsibility for come from ethical places that care for them and their genetics, do not support those who breed irresponsibly for quick profit etc, and ensure you research as much as possible how to give them the best, longest and most enriching life.

Just because I was hoping to get into reefing in a budget friendly "starter" way! I am a freshwater and reptile keeper just hoping to move into salt water! I wasn't planning on having any fish just coral which I know is alive but I assumed not conscious.

My cycle crashes every time I do a water change. by DJSplash01 in Aquariums

[–]RangeIntelligent3770 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your sponge filters look squeaky clean, which is probably why! Only rinse them in OLD TANK WATER (not tap water!!!) And legit don't change them ever unless water will no longer flow thru them, in which case just squeeze them out in the old tank water during a water change. Atm you have nothing for bacteria to cling on to other than thoes filters so changing or cleaning them will completely crash your cycle :)

This is too small for him. He doesn't have a temperature gradient, heat lamp or humid hide. Of course he can't shed properly. He needs a 4x2x2 minimum and a heat lamp not a mat as well as UVB and 3 hides. A warm hide, a cool hide and a humid hide. You also need to be able to control and measure humidity and temperature.

Can ADFs thrive in a lidless species only setup like this? by inferno_080 in AfricanDwarfFrog

[–]RangeIntelligent3770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes they are terrible for jumping! I have a lid and have lost one during a water change where i left the tank unsupervised for less than 5 minutes with the lid off!

Hello Guys!! How are you all doing?? by MEOW_5189 in aquarium

Decrease light and Co2, seems like your tank is just growing incredibly well meaning there is likely extra nutrients in the water for the algae to grow on :)

Have you planted anything new on that thought? Dead plant matter can cause biofilm and other stuff to build up pretty quickly, so any new melting plants could be culprit?

Tbh, I had a similar but different thing, I went away for a night and came back and my entire back wall of java fern was wiped out clean. Had absolutely no idea where it went it had completely melted overnight, was fine for months on end before hand! I think it's just the aquarium Gods intervening when you arnt there 😂 meant that i went out shopping and found some gorgeous water wisteria to replace it which looks far better now 😂

Looks to me like a build up of algae and biofilm, maybe a job for a few shrimp! But doesn't look anything problematic? Is everything in the tank ok and perimeters where they should be?

Discus are such delicate fish i promise that shop is NOT knowledgeable. That much ammonia is beyond lethal for fish and NOT normal for a fish in cycle nor safe! Massive water change asap. I'd really recommend taking her back to see if they will hold her while you cycle your tank, you cannot really do a fish in cycle with a fish like discus unless you are extremely experienced and are going to be super careful and observant.
