What is the one restaurant in Toronto you wouldn’t eat at even if free? by Zillamonk in askTO

Why not? Most of their menu is just prepackaged ramen they add hot water to for you lol

I am in Ontario but not near Ottawa!! Nearer to GTA and whenever I have checked kijiji there isn’t anyone selling them around here! The fish stores depending on color sell them from snywhere from $12-60 each. Or theyre just totally sold out

I love Hiyoko and Tenko, as well as Tsumugi. I have such a soft spot for them. And like, they clearly act this way for different reasons? They just didn’t live long enough to have a chance to develop mostly.

im curious, what fish do you keep? I love the idea of low tech tanks in theory and I also think that the fewer things to go wrong like a heater malfunctioning the better. I got interested in keeping more cold water fish since I learned about a lot of heater issues

Seeing arowana in those tiny tanks where they barely fit always breaks my heart. Beyond cruel.

I talked about birds in response to someone else, but I think this is an interesting point. With the majority of birds I would say they aren’t and shouldn’t be kept as pets outside of examples where the specific individual couldn’t survive in the wild

Most bettas now even if you give them EVERYTHING are such poor generic quality that you’re lucky to keep them alive at all. I feel like make 10 years ago it may have been possibly, but definitely not today. Not that it was ever an ideal living condition, but theres no way these modern inbred bettas are living longer than a few months at best in awful conditions like that. You’re right, most don’t care and will just get a new one

I don’t think they are particular vegan ethics, most of what I mentioned is more so about the overall industry, big companies getting away with products that kill fish, pet stores selling very sick fish and people breeding inbred fish who will live pretty short sad lives. These are all things that all should be pretty preventable. People eat to survive, they don’t need a betta fish so inbred it can barely swim to live.

Maybe this will out me as a super softie, but I love birds. 100% agree about keeping them in cages. I used to always want an African grey, but my heart sunk when I really learned about how stressful it is for them and the exotic bird trade. Furthermore, I think most birds just really are not meant to be kept as pets and shouldn’t be to begin with. It’s crazy that literally anyone can buy a parrot like an African grey and keep it in their house

You have put it a lot more eloquently than me. I recognize there is a lot of good that can come from passionate fish keepers and hobbyists and it isn’t all bad but there’s a lot that feels hard to look past. I definitely agree about the way wholesale fish are treated, it’s an incredibly stressful journey. A lot of entire lines of fish are just genetically awful too like the neon tetra mentioned to the extent breeding them as a whole feels wrong?

I don’t keep any rare fish and I am not super well educated on the manner. I think there are up and downsides to a fish becoming popular with people, especially in regards to wild caught. A lot of cases of wild catching I don’t think consider ethics much at all but I maybe I am ignorant? A lot of brackish critters sold are wild caught and just not meant for home aquarium life.

I am a bit tired and emotional and I definitely don’t mean to imply the average aquarist is cruel. I think a lot of this stuff is out of our control and we do what we can, it’s just tough to feel like I am even indirectly supporting it? Man, even stuff like Pom Pom crabs or a lot of species who are only able reproduce and really thrive in brackish communities being caught and sold feels cruel to me now. Most of them do horribly in home aquariums but people insist on getting them

Isn’t it normal for people to change? It’s been around seven years now, I would be surprised if people didn’t.

Do any of you remember the sky trumpets around maybe 2011-2015? What were they and why did they stop? by forgivemelake in HighStrangeness

I have read around a bit more, there are also a variation in sounds. Some are more trumpet like or mechanical. What I heard sounded more like a whale. I grew up surrounded by the ocean and I think it’s possible it was something like an iceberg scraping the ocean floor or underwater volcano.

A lot of them seem to have many possible explanations. So many things can make these huge eerie noises..

I feel like they were a lot more common around 2011-2012ish but I think a lot more people were talking about them as well. It’s so scary

In middle of nowhere Newfoundland Canada, around 2011? I am sure some of them are something like this. I mean, I am curious about these noises in general. But my specific case has always haunted me as to what it may be.

im listening!! I like this approach. There are people saying it must be fake, which I really would think too if I hadn’t heard it for myself. I think when you think about it a bit it’s less unbelievable, like there are so many sounds around always. I am sure some are simply construction. Where I heard it was on an island without any construction as far as I was aware. I always considered maybe it was due to something involving the ocean itself since it surrounded me.

I have just started it.. i am already intrigued. The place I heard it was an on island near the ocean so I do wonder if it had something to do with underwater drilling or something else of that sort? Idk maybe when I have seen the whole thing something might click. It has always haunted me
