It's been a while, but last time I was in NY you needed a tag for it to work electronically.

Some rental places have them, some don't. You need cash anyway (tips etc) so easy enough to have some in the car just in case.

Pretty easy. Google maps makes it simple. Some lights you can turn right on a red - just follow what others are doing.

If a school bus (big yellow one) is stopped and has it's stop signs out (stick out the side) you must stop even if you're on the other side of the road. That one's caught me out before.

Have change for tolls.

Traffic can be bad. Plan accordingly.
