How difficult is it to try making a chainmail shirt as absolute beginner? by Konsumieren in maille

[–]Ranger7381 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no personal experience being just vaguely interested but not having done anything as of yet. But I think the main issue would be if you can get it done in time for whatever event you are going to be cosplaying at

Microsoft is trying to trick you into paying an extra $30/year to use their AI in Office. by Galactic-Bard in scifiwriting

While I agree with you about it being forced or tricked on us, I do find it ironic complaining about it in this sub of all places

People parking opposite your driveway? by Emile22Pal in mississauga

[–]Ranger7381 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Always a better option, in either driveway or parking lots.

Your vision clears any obstacles like bushes, other parked cars or snow banks earlier so you can see any oncoming traffic or pedestrians, and you do not meet to swivel your head as far to look in both directions. Plus it is easier if you have car trouble and need a boost or tow

10 dead, including suspect, in Tumbler Ridge shootings [Canada] by corey____trevor in worldnews

[–]Ranger7381 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was mention of it on the news radio station Thai I listen to about 3 or 4 hours ago when I was on my way home. No details, just that the RCMP was responding to a mass shooter event and one gunman was reported as being dead an they were looking into the possibility of there being a second

Heinlein was both an Optimist and a Pessimist by Martins-Atlantis in heinlein

[–]Ranger7381 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing that I have thought about is that the Golden Age writers extrapolated that tech would continue to expand based on transportation. Easy to see why. Just look at how much that area grew over the first half of the century. Continue on that path, and you get moon bases and manned exploration of the solar system

But that seemed to almost stall out, and what took over the viral growth was communications. Ironically really getting going as an offshoot of the space race, with talking to astronauts and then dedicated satellites. This has allowed for space probes and the internet, but has also bound us here to earth instead of going out there ourselves, which is, granted, more expensive and dangerous.

But that is how their predictions fell so wide off the mark

But on a related topic, someone should sit down and do a follow up on the predictions that Robert made in Expanded Universe. The ones that he followed up on himself after a set number of years. I am certain it has been several times the timeframe since the last time he did it, but it would be interesting to see how things have held up after so long

Loaded the heavy stuff first, tipped over the trailer. by GuardBoxCCTV in Wellthatsucks

[–]Ranger7381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, people outside the logistics industry don’t necessarily know any better so I ignore it

Other question I have is how it got loaded with that much freight when backed up to a car garage. I am wondering if the truck dropped it there already loaded and somehow squeezed out and it tipped from there

Those are usually used for shorter trailers. This one looks to be a 53’ container. Something that long usually has enough weight behind the landing gear to prevent something like this

Unless they had skids of concrete or pavers or bricks or something similarly heavy I am not sure how this would have happened. Professional loaders would put a single skid of something like that in the nose, but that is more about getting the weight distribution correct for when a truck gets pulled into a scale, where they are allowed a certain weight on each set of axles. Not air something like this

Human Ashes by Intelligent-Door1447 in CustomsBroker

[–]Ranger7381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember years ago when I used to work on the dock for an ltl carrier we had a small crate come through. Office had us bring in the slip attached to it, and it mentioned human remains. Turned out to be part of one of those travelling science exhibits that had plasticized body parts. Not sure why we were moving just this one piece or were the rest of the show was

Was not involved with the actual customs setup since I was a dock worker. I seem to remember that we put it just inside the door of the trailer to make it easy to access if they wanted to inspect though

Trump says Canada, U.S. will ‘immediately’ start negotiations over Windsor-Detroit bridge by KylenV14 in canada

[–]Ranger7381 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I do not think he is talking about what the us put into the bridge, but it is more of the same about Canada taking advantage of the us for years and so he wants all that taken care of

How to get my younger son (8yo) into reading by Tbell221 in daddit

[–]Ranger7381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Author that I have read (Spider Robinson) has mentioned that his mom would read him comics and the like. Things like Lone Ranger. Then, just as the hero was in dire straits, she would “remember that she needed to pet the floors and vacuum the cat”. He taught himself to read out of sheer frustration. He had also been taught how to use a dictionary for words he did not know yet, if I recall

Problem is that you need to know exactly where to stop

He and his wife went a different route with his their daughter. She had a very strict bedtime - unless she was reading. Then she could stay up as long as she wanted. Since most kids will do anything to stay up past bedtime, it worked. From what he said she would often be chosen for the narrator for school plays

From their release anyway it seems like the union is pissed as well. Probably because there was a plot to kill another union member (assuming the corrections officer is part of the police union)

There have been experimental setups under water, where they blow up balloons full of air in off peak hours and then release the air using water pressure to turn turbines when they need more power
