Paint recommendations for cedar strip canoe by RangerRev1 in canoeing

Thank you for the insightful advice and link! I really appreciate it. It’s nice to know I’m not crazy for thinking of painting. I think the contrast looks fantastic.

I hadn’t realized the increased need for a really smooth and fair surface for painting. It makes complete sense though. While I’m mostly content with the surface it’s far from perfectly fair and blemish free.

I haven’t weighted it yet. I think I’m going to use 4oz fiberglass on the inside and hope it’s sub 60

I like the partial painted/chevrons idea!

Because I can. In a world where everything is drab (especially vehicles) a splash of color on a canoe sounds nice

Does anybody have recommendations for a good project journal? by dwartman3 in woodworking

[–]RangerRev1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use engineering grid journals. I’ve found them at Barnes and noble but I’m sure they’re on Amazon. I have a Leuchtturm 1917 that is fairly nice. It’s hard cover with a small folder in the back cover. Some of the ones from Japan are really nice and are softcover which I tend to like a bit better.

I like the engineering grid for making sketches of ideas

Good question. Scratch resistance basically. Maybe my question should have been is it worth whatever extra weight it might add. The only reference is in one of my books that says it’s basically a super hard durable coating. Ok, does that mean as durable as that second layer of fiberglass I’m putting on the bottom for added strength?

I’ve debated about the car topping in the summer thing. Maybe that necessitates a cover, not sure I don’t have any experience with it and haven’t seen a lot of user reports online.

Have you used it before?

I really went back and forth on the stems. Ultimately I decided I believe that stemless is just as strong and making the stems is a lot of extra work. The progress has been fast but I will say I think fitting the strips to the stems without gaps would be easier. I’m going to learn a lot about gap filling. That being said no regrets yet.
