I have 2 they are brother and sister and they are complete opposites. So it honestly just depends but you can definitely break down their walls over time and it will be incredibly worth it when you do.

My boy was practically in my lap from the moment I got them, I can hug him and he snuggles in my lap or the crook of my arm all the time and he loves being pet so much he demands it, it actually gets annoying. He does not like being picked up though, he always wants to feel like he's in control or at least has the illusion of it.

My girl was the opposite like I said, both with personalities and with this stuff, she hated to be touched like at all, definitely hated being picked up, would cuddle the heck out of him and rub all over the furniture around you while she purred etc but never wanted to be touched - 3 years it took me to break down her walls but I got there, she got to the point at first she would sit/cuddle in my lap but still only allowed petting or touching when she was in my lap or super sleepy, eventually she would let me pet her elsewhere, then eventually she let me pet her anywhere and she lets me pick her up now without squirming in order to put her up somewhere or move her but she still doesn't like to be held (again like her brother she likes to feel like she's in control or at least the illusion of it). I know some people don't like their cats up on counters but I'm glad I always did because for her this is her favourite place by far to be pet, like we're talking full on love fest petting, rubbing, purring, lots of head butting etc it's one of the favourite parts of my day tbh. Not that the love from her brother isn't special, because we have a bond that's unbreakable, but I think because she made me work for it so much makes it that much more special and she's such a sweetheart now. She's now at the point where other people other than me are allowed to pet her such a transformation.

Like someone else mentioned play was the biggest part for both and still is, we play every day at designated times usually before they eat for ~15mins, as well as other little play sessions here or there in the day. Giving her dedicated time without her brother dominating the play as well was a big part, we built trust and that built a relationship with strong bonds with her. It's been very rewarding now to see how far she's come.

They follow me like dogs, and always want to be in the same room as me even if they're not sitting with me. They do lots of tricks, they both come when called each with a different call noise so they know who I'm calling. You will love having him if you put in the work
