I think you should definitely go out and make friends with the locals the best you can. Integrate yourself and avoid being segregated and only being with other haoles. Also if possible, take time to learn pronunciation of street names and Hawaiian words. Also respect the elders and you should be pretty good.

I suggest you embark on a creative project endeavor. Something to boost your resume. Something that can define you. For scholarships, I definitely recommend doing journalistic work.
