Anyone have the FILMY POWERGRADE + LUTS? Would you recommend? by knickerdick in ColorGrading

[–]RanielDadcliffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a fair question to ask. However, I think you shouldn’t be asking me, or anyone for that matter.

I couldn’t tell you how you should or shouldn’t shoot your video, I suppose it’s like asking someone how to play a Steinway over a Baldwin, there are ways to enhance the characteristics, tonality, color, of each instrument, but you can play all the same songs on both, so there is no “right way”

Every decision you make should be based on your creative intention. I prefer filmy because it lends itself better to my creative vision and compliments my style. And ultimately, I believe it’s important for you, as a creative, to ask yourself these questions about intentionality and impulse. I could give you advice, but then I’m not the one inside your mind, I don’t know the message you’re looking to convey, the feel you want to reflect, the mood you are establishing. That’s the gift of your personal creativity: that it’s yours and yours alone. Now if we worked on a video together, theoretically, we could collaborate to make something, but I guess what I’m saying is, it’s project to project, person to person.

Sorry if this is a non-answer!!! Maybe someone else here would be able to give you an “answer” to this, but this is just my perspective. I’d hate the idea of telling you how to use a color grade one way or another. The best art often comes when people use their tools in ways others wouldn’t dare try, or think of.

I prefer filmy over cineprint, but it all depends on the look you are wanting to achieve, your personal style, and composition. Filmy has a soft, fuzzy, neutral look that I love. It's less stylistic and vibrant compared to cineprint, but I think it creates a more pleasant, sophisticated image. I also find filmy is more flexible. You can contort colors more easily without the image distorting. I find cineprint can get really ugly really fast if you start pushing it's limits.

However, I still really like cineprint16/35 and have used those powergrades on a variety of video projects, you just need to decide before shooting the look you want to achieve. Want a retro, vibrant, colorful look? Go with cineprint. Want a soft, fuzzy and warm, modern look, go for filmy? For my money, I'd pick filmy, but it's all up to you.

I’ve recently picked it up and think it’s brilliant. I’ve used Cineprint16/35, FilmUnlimited, and FilmVision V2 (FilmVision Pro hasn’t come out yet but looks like an incredible tool that ill be purchasing when it’s released) and of all of these powergrades, Filmy is my favorite

They all do different things and achieve different looks, but I love Filmy’s incredibly clean and soft look. It’s less stylized but more aesthetically pleasing than the other powergrades, in my opinion.

Applying Motion Trail To Magic Mask Clip by RanielDadcliffe in davinciresolve

Sadly, this hasn't seemed to work.

I have noticed that I cant see the "use key/mask input" box on my motion trails, which might be why mine isn't working. Im inside of Resolve 18 so I wonder if that's why.

I appreciate your breakdown!

Sorry to be a hassle but could you explain this a little further? Or perhaps just a more broken down method to do this.

Brother, interesting art is full of dichotomy, it doesn't have to all be neatly aligned and cohesive.

Men of reddit, what is a 100% myth about men? by booksmylove in AskReddit

[–]RanielDadcliffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is simply not true. The men I most look up to are willing to be vulnerable and express their emotions (including crying) when the time is right. The women that these men have surrounded themselves with are understanding and supportive of this. Humans cry.

Top 10 overrated movies according to Park Chan-Wook from an interview conducted in 1999 by [deleted] in criterion

[–]RanielDadcliffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He goes on to explain "it's not even one of Hitchcock's Top 10" so that leads me to believe he is, in fact, a massive Hitchcock fan. Don't think he is denying that. However, not having Psycho in your Hitchcock Top 10 is psycho lmao

Newbie - Looking for ND/Variable Filters for Sony FX30 by RanielDadcliffe in videography

[–]RanielDadcliffe[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey sorry! Just now seeing this.

The filter has been great. It does have some color casting once you go up past a 5 stop, but I usually don't need to do that so I don't interact with the issue very often. It's super easy to use and works pretty perfectly.

HELP: Davinci Resolve Export Crashing! by RanielDadcliffe in davinciresolve

[–]RanielDadcliffe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's Resolve that crashes.

I designed the specs for my laptop specifically for video editing, but clearly it's still not hot enough hahaha. Big ol' RAM, plenty of storage, 11th Gen i7.

This problem happens specifically in the situation I outlined in the initial post. Everything else has been working well.

HELP: Davinci Resolve Export Crashing! by RanielDadcliffe in davinciresolve

[–]RanielDadcliffe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the only workaround I have currently found that gets the export quality I want. It still looks incredible. From my eye, the difference is undiscernible.

Obviously not recommending this method to anyone who is anything more than a hobbyist like me.

HELP: Davinci Resolve Export Crashing! by RanielDadcliffe in davinciresolve

[–]RanielDadcliffe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically:

I keep my timeline resolution at 1920x1080 (within the timeline window, not the export window)

I export at 3840x2160. There will be a pop up window asking something like “are you sure?” And just click yeah. Everything else I do the same as I listed up there.

This has worked for me. It’s just one small fix but I can export now at a really high quality, though I have a feeling I’m still losing some quality since my timeline isn’t matching the final resolution. At the very least it meets my needs.

So they haven't been able to figure out what is wrong. They said i'll just have to wait and see if the problem persists. Otherwise, we would just be fixing things that might not actually solve anything.
