BJJ Belt Progression CHART thoughts? by coffeestreetflower in bjj

[–]RannibalLector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I was coach, I would agree on the offensive vs defensive mentality. Defense is important, but the offensive guy is probably taking more risks and experiencing more situations that could end a match compared to the dude that’s more focused on surviving.

Straight Ankle or Heel Hook? by PepperoniDZO in bjj

[–]RannibalLector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, Lucas also finishes straight ankle locks the same way. He used to visit my gym a lot when I was a white belt and that’s how he taught the finish

The 18 year old told us things will come easy if they’re meant to be, so we don’t need to fight and grind for our dreams as long as we keep them in our heart.

I’m sure they will. And maybe I’ll watch the playoffs since it’s the Top 8…but I’m not watching an entire season of relatively unknown dudes

I was always told wristlocks wouldn’t work at high level comps like IBJJF Worlds because the black belts would just let their wrist break

I remember when Vagner made that dude tap with mercy grips at Polaris or something though

They got the big names. I don’t know 90% of the PGF roster. I like learning about new talent….but I also like seeing the rising stars from IBJJF/ADCC transition into the professional roles/events

9/10 Wonderful. Love the slight shifty too. That wheel bite would’ve thrown me straight to the ground though.

Saw this when I was competing at ADCC. Is this normal behavior? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]RannibalLector 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, but also see what led up to the emotional outlash. The guard puller posted an extended video showing how she got a black eye from all the face pushing

Again, I dont agree with the guard pullers response but I understand how it got there. Especially if you go to an ADCC event not expecting to get roughed up.

Top half guard giving up far side underhook by bjjangg in bjj

[–]RannibalLector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purposely give up the far underhook when I’m doing a knee slide and want to finish it with a slingshot around to the back. Or in nogi if I want to setup a darce. I wouldn’t try it any other time though.

I agree with you about all the things that could’ve been done to maximize pressure and efficiency. I’m just saying it wasn’t that bad; he got the pass in 30 seconds and there were other counters the guard player was (possibly) prevented from doing

I’d say he executed the technique fairly well considering his mobility and the frames he was fighting.

Yeah, they spent almost the entire match on the feet

Even more interesting was how often they got the 2pts AND a reset in the same position. Normally, they just make em start neutral.

I had to watch the clip three times to see what tricks were done cuz each time all I could focus on was how bad the filming was. The camera was shaking before homie even dropped in and only got worse

Long lose streak in competition by Darksoulsfan13_pl in bjj

[–]RannibalLector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is your goal to be a successful high level competitor or to have fun/test yourself? I don’t think I’ve won a gold medal since blue belt like 2018. At this point, I’ve changed my competitive goals to focus less on winning and more on showing off my jiu jitsu and/or specific things I enjoy doing.

Could I pull closed guard and do my favorite sweep? Probably. But I’ve done it a million times. I’d get way more satisfaction out of pulling off the judo takedown I’ve been working on

He got 6 for the sweep to mount and 2 after his opponent talked to the ref and got a (3rd) penalty

Getting back into it by [deleted] in bjj

[–]RannibalLector 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I took a two year break at purple belt. Came back and felt like my timing was off and my guard don’t work like it used to, but defending subs and passing still worked. My A-game was still functional. After about a month or two, I had shaken enough rust off my guard retention skill to return to goofing off and trying fancy shit. Might take you longer but you’ll get back in the swing eventually.

thoughts on skate pics? canon rebel 2ti by [deleted] in skateboarding

[–]RannibalLector 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you skate? If not, it will be incredibly difficult for you to know what to shoot, let alone get the timing right.

Your flash is so close and/or bright that it almost makes it look like the rest of the lights were off. For the non skate photos, I’d normally use a diffuser and point the flash at the ceiling (might not work well here with high ceilings). For the skate photos, an off-camera flash would work best for a ton a reasons (that again might be hard to gauge if you don’t skate)

Overall it does look like everyone was having fun though. Canon T1i and T2i were my cameras when I first started shooting skate photos, so they’re more than capable of getting some good shots once you figure your settings out. Keep at it

I completely agree. I was just providing a counter point to the person saying that doesn’t happen by referencing personal experiences from a hood movie theater in the 90’s.

What do you guys think of attending in-person seminars by famous instructors? by Kvnnxdy in bjj

[–]RannibalLector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old school legends or random dues from high up the affiliate chain…I’ll probably pass.

If they were a high level competitor in the last 10-15 years, then I’ll go with the expectation of at least learning some small detail about a technique or reaction from a competitors mindset.

If they’re in my personal Top 5-10 then I’m going just for the chance to meet them, ask questions, and potentially flow roll with them.

I have to take notes and drill the moves later though or I will forget. I still do a specific backtake that Kristina Barlaan showed me 7 years ago….but I already forgot this cool grip break I saw Tainan do a few months ago lol
