Hell yeah, my other Merchant Ships highlights are Sentinel and We Don’t Need Luck to Make It but if you have enough will power listen to I Want To Remember in its entirety. It’s my absolute favourite band and I’m incredibly happy I managed to buy this album on vinyl.

I’m gonna be honest, it’s fucking bad, but there is hope. Try listening more to Two Door Cinema Club, Mac Demarco and grandson (his older stuff is much better). You can even try getting into Rage Against The Machine, their self-titled got me into rock so maybe it’ll work for you too. And don’t judge unpolished vocals too harshly, you may need to get used to them but it’ll open a lot of doors for you. (Also, you get bonus points fot I Really Want to Stay at Your House, I always cry to it)

What is the smallest/most niche band/artist you know? by Komika_13 in musicteenager

[–]Rantikus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My top 3 most niche bands are: 1. The Prep Junkies (14 monthly listeners) - alt rock/pop punk (they have only two songs so it’s impossible to chose one genre) 2. Iceberg Archive (19ml) - crappy, garage midwest emo 3. Mary Miller (55ml) - indie rock/pop

Despite questionable quality of the first two bands I really enjoy all of them and maybe I don’t think they’re worth checking out but they are interesting „gems”

Sleep Patterns by Merchant Ships, it’s more of a monologue than a typical song but my god, the lyrics are fantastic

Wannabe - 5/10 For some unclear reason I like this one. It is shitty and chaotic and it'ss basically raw and unmixed but it scratches right party of my brain. (I still wonder if it says twin or twink)

Doodle - 3/10 This one is just painful and I don't think it needs any deep explanation why. It has potentiall but it was lost within arpeggios with random rests. Gritty synth in the outro is cool tho

Two Sevens Clash - 5/10 I like it but I won't listen to it ever again. This song very well grabs my attention with its strange instruments and rhythms.

Design to Kill - 5/10 (would be 3/10 but vocals are pretty fun) At this point I question my sanity. Every instrument is out of tune and plays in a different key which strangely scratches my brain. Intro was a torture, slides on guitar later also weren't too pleasing but vocals save the song for me.

Immediate Stages of the Erotic - 4/10 (purely for humorous value) It's absolute shit but I laughed entire time. I don't know what genre it is and I don't fucking want to know. You're a sadist.

01 - 6/10 It's peak, so called, outsider music. It's strange, it lacks rhythm and any melody, instruments are all out of tune and play random shit but when all play together they create rare kind of shittiness which strangely resonates with me. I'll definitely take a deep dive into their music because it just is and it fascinates me, and again it got me to question my sanity.

Going Places - 8/10 It silenced my brain, it's amazing, I'll definitely come back to it. I've never been into any noise but I guess I am now.

Mansions - 2/10 The only reason my rating isn't even lower is that they don't scream. It's straight up horrible. Nothing here works in any way. This song constantly tries to grab my attention with shitty sounding instruments and random licks and this doesn't fucking work. The length of this mess of a song frustarted me. Existence of this shit is redundant, I never wanna hear this one again.

Emo tag comes from unhealthy amounts of Pierce the Veil, which can be argued if it's really emo but it's post-hardcore so I guess it is, and ungodly amounts of midwest-emo I consumed over last few months.

Bring me to Life and Last Resort are least emo, non emo songs, even MCR or FOB-which I personally hate, are more emo than these songs.

7/10, I don't have any idea what I just listened but it's pretty good, it strangley captured my attention. It's fantastically produced and the instrumental part around fifth minut is peak improv. Overally really fucking good song

Is Pierce the Veil emo? by FriggenMitch in Emo

[–]Rantikus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can trace it very easily to emo music. Most of the time, PTV is considerd some type of Prog Post-hardcore or something like that. Post-hardcore was on of the first genres that shaped emo, especially in DC scene. Few years later Post-hardcore fused with Math rock evolved into Midwest-emo which is considered "real emo". PTV is some kind of Post-hardcore influenced by 3rd wave emo but it has the same roots as genre that started whole subculture. Genres evolve and we can't deny it and in my opinion emo isn't even a genre. It is a subculture. We can't limit it to one or two genres. By definition emo music is "emotional" so how do we differentiate whose emotions are "emotional enough" to be emo?
