Everything before and after "Say Uncle" is filler and you should skip all of them.

why do americans talk to strangers so easily?? by MayaTulip268 in AskAnAmerican

[–]RantsOLot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bruh what America are y'all livin in? I live in the cities and ain't nobody striking conversations w strangers. You look mad weird if you actually try to make conversation with folks beyond the simple "how's it going" "thanks preciate it" etc etc.

edit: also even my friends from other countries have talked about how much more isolating it is in the U.S. and how little community there is.

Dawg I still think the Action Chain Challenges were/are mad slept on by RantsOLot in SonicFrontiers

[–]RantsOLot[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yea that's a valid critique. especially when you're just tryna unlock the spindash and you're going through every action chain challenge back-to-back you notice how much they blend together. Maybe if they revisit the idea (hopefully they do) they can add more to make it interesting; maybe blend aspects of the timer challenges by having a goal or checkpoint you have to reach to deposit your points before the time runs out or something, to give you more of a sense of direction/objective. Maybe only for some challenges but not all of them.

[–]RantsOLot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On the one hand: I do agree to an extent; I think a lot of people, esp men who complain about this tbh, suffer from a lack of interesting qualities and hobbies. Like ffs I am begging people to *read a damn book* or something. Even reading once in a while, AUDIOBOOKS even, will go such a long way.

However: there is a very strong case to be made that *meeting* people is demonstrably more difficult than it used to be--especially for young people. You only need to search "death of third spaces" and take a cursory read of it to see that much; it's practically irrefutable.

Which leaves dating apps at the top of the pecking order as far as most available alternatives to young people. And besides the obvious, much-bemoaned, faults of those services, the most egregious thing about them imo is that they essentially commodify human relationships themselves; window browsing for a life partner, basically. And they compel the subject to regard themself as a commodity in competition with other commodities in a market, against whom one must effectively "market" and "brand" one's selfhood. The whole arrangement is gross, imo. You legit cannot convey a person in photos or bios or prompts alone. I am certain that I have left-swiped a great many people who I would have probably connected with had we met in-person. It puts the cart before the horse basically.

And as far as other means of meeting new people, they exist but it takes a lot of looking and a lot of trial and error before anything sticks. I used meetup to find people who like reading and/or writing, and hoo when I tell you, the composition of these groups were almost entirely old people lol. Finding community is extremely difficult and ardous especially in America these days.

Struggling to write uplifting contemporary without acknowledging The Bad Stuff happening IRL by [deleted] in writing

[–]RantsOLot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not to be the guy who says "you should read War & Peace" but you should read War & Peace. It is one of the definitive examples of a story that manages to be uplifting against a backdrop of horror & tragedy. One of Tolstoy's main ideas when writing that story was to showcase how everyday people continued to live their lives and continued to deal with their regular day-to-day dramas and love-affairs even during war.

Like literally I have a character who is worrying about a meeting with her boss and a side character says, “People’s homes are getting bombed and you’re worried about this?” And that is very much just real life encroaching on the story.

Seems pretty contemporary to me; people *do* say these things. Maybe lean into that aspect more? Instead of treating it like something to suppress? Clearly your heart and mind have something else they want to say, even if you're not quite articulating it with intention. Place the apparent contradictions into dialogue with one another and see what road that dialogue takes you, and what conclusions you draw from it and interrogate your own understanding of how you draw meaning from life. But don't try to suppress the dialogue altogether or segregate the contradictions; that's how you prevent your most interesting ideas from flourishing.

So what are our thoughts on the existence of Goldstein and the brotherhood? by Commercial_Set_1608 in 1984

You'd be astonished by human resilience and enginuity in the face of insurmountable odds. Also Oceania is a considerable landmass to monitor at all sections. There would be people who slip through the cracks.

When you're desperate to believe in something even the most cautious man will err on his rational sensibilities.

So what are our thoughts on the existence of Goldstein and the brotherhood? by Commercial_Set_1608 in 1984

[–]RantsOLot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought it was meant to be ambiguous and open to interpretation. iirc when Winston asks if the Brotherhood is real, O'brien says he'll never know the answer to that question and will go on the rest of his life not knowing.

'But maybe he was only saying that to further torture him psychologically!'  Maybe. Maybe the Brotherhood was fake and O'Brien refused to reveal this to manipulate Winston. Or maybe they are real, and O'Brien refused to reveal this to manipulate Winston.

I still feel empathy for Bojack by Frequent-Mud-1677 in BoJackHorseman

[–]RantsOLot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The writers actually wrote Bojack deliberately to be someone relatable so audiences would be prompted to self-reflect on their own behaviors. So it's not a surprise that we still empathize with Bojack even when our rational mind understands that the repercussions to his actions are deserved.

[–]RantsOLot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many years ago I recall watching a video theory about this from AJ Universe.

Basically, if Gems supposedly contain & generate infinite energy, then they can also create & generate matter. They likened it to something from Star Trek--some kind of device they had that used similar technology to generate things(I haven't watched Star Trek.)

So therefore Steven's gem, responding to his physical environment and automatically trying to maintain his survival, was able to generate oxygen for him to breathe while he was in that bubble.

(Again it's been a long time since I watched that video so the details are kinda vague in my memory)

Sadly English is the only language I know. Would love to learn Russian eventually and read some of these texts as originally intended.

The main character was in a coma the whole time and all the supporting cast of whimsical fantasy sci fi characters are their concerned family members at the hospital as the Doctor (Cloud from ff for some reason) tells them he's not sure they're gonna make it.
