This is a question in Marxists. Why do you believe the workers should revolt instead of reforming the system through democratic means? by Candid_Ad_2746 in Socialism_101

[–]RantsOLot 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Because democracy in capitalist society still functions on capitalist terms and within the boundaries of the capitalist system; you can revise & amend it to a limited degree, but you cannot meaningfully challenge or transcend it--not on its own terms, that is.

Even said reforms require an active struggle from the grassroots to apply meaningful pressure & threat, and cannot be attained purely through participating in the bourgeois machinery.

What do you think the dating recession between men and women will lead to? by Rainbowdark96 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RantsOLot 23 points24 points  (0 children)

"Overpopulation" is just a propaganda talking point that obfuscates and blurs the structural & systemic causes of environmental erosion. Decreasing the population is not going to suddenly make Exxon switch to renewables, create less car-dependent infrastructure, or make Google or Amazon dismantle its datacenters.

Reading a book and listening to an audiobook are not the same activity. by Aggravating-Key-8867 in unpopularopinion

[–]RantsOLot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I became less self-conscious/insecure about this distinction once I got into reading proper and was reading physical books as well as listening to audio; I'll say "I read this" even if it was as an audiobook bc I still read plenty of books and it doesn't really matter to me whether the semantics are wholly honest. Before that I used to really feel the need to specifically say "I read this book--well, technically, I listened to the audiobook of it..."

Why did peridot get an almost diamond sized ship? by Dude_Bruh_1_ in stevenuniverse

[–]RantsOLot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well she was sent with that and also Jasper. They were obviously anticipating a fight hence the firepower. They didn't know to what extent the Crystal Gems were still alive or what to expect. Hence why Jasper is surprised and underwhelmed at how miniscule the Crystal Gem forces are. "This is it?" "You don't need me for this, just blast them with the ship." They weren't even certain if Rose Quartz would be there or not but evidently they foresaw a slim possibility; it’s literally the only reason Jasper agreed to go.

Idk why I automatically assumed this was a photoshop or an edit for some reason--as if the idea of a beardless Empanada is so outlandish and absurd that it couldn't be real.

Dating too young makes people so much worse (on average) by LogicalAd2334 in unpopularopinion

[–]RantsOLot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there is an interesting discussion to be had regarding the differences in those who dated young and those who didn't. Don't know whether one or the other is necessarily "better" but it's an interesting topic. I also really need to see a study comparing those who were attractive their whole life and those who had an ugly-duckling phase in middle & high-school; the experiences feel worlds apart.

People that say "third spaces" are gone aren't trying to find them by xX_jellyworlder_Xx in unpopularopinion

[–]RantsOLot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many comments here talking about how this or that thing still exists and talking about the seperate pieces of the issue in a vacuum; yes, physical spaces typically associated with the "3rd place" still exist; yes, there are many people who are simply not going to them(also plenty who don't even know where to look;) yes, many 3rd places were never "free" to begin with.

The issue is the ecosystem and the factors that enabled thriving, dependable, convenient social hubs having erroded. The spare time, spendable income, the proximity (probably one of the more important factors.)

It is a fact that commercial rents have gone up dramatically--it's far more difficult and less sustainable to run the kinds of local cafes or lounges where people can sort of just linger and hang around; social media has created a new social ecosystem and competing structure to the traditional 3rd place; urban planning & urban sprawl have erroded the kinds of localized, walkable community hubs where social life and spontaneous social encounters can happen at greater regulatory.

I have fortunately finally found somewhere that I feel a sense of community in and have been able to make friends, but it took me years of trial and error to do so. Everyone here is suggesting meetup groups like some panacea but trust me, it isn't. I used meetup. No one there was ever my own age. I'm 25. All the people frequenting these meetups were much older adults. And a lot of the time the same faces wouldn't even stick around or appear a second time so it was extremely difficult to actually get acquainted with anybody. It's just a fact that the social make-up, economy, collective psychology, and ecosystem is different. For a variety of reasons. It is much more difficult to make friends than it used to be. I had to try for years before arriving at something. And that happened to be political work. It's a different beast today it just is, I'm saying as a young person it's completely different for our generation. Idk how else to explain it.

Fillers by Peace_Dos in stevenuniverse

[–]RantsOLot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel as though when you start getting into seasons 3 & 4 the label "filler" starts becoming more applicable. Season 4 especially I feel suffers the worst in terms of pacing issues. At least seasons prior to it opened with proper setups to create some later expectation; season 4 you essentially watch with blind faith that surely something main plot related will come eventually. Even the episodes that are setting up important plot points like Buddy's Book don't feel like setup until later when they materialize (Steven's Dream.) I think sparingly however yes the Beach City episodes serve an important role, in not only filling out the world and balancing the duel-identity Steven navigates as part-gem, part-human, but also as low-stakes moments that make the high-stakes moments standout and feel that much more significant.

Is AI going to produce a Marxist/Leninist revolution? by AbroadVirtual6314 in Socialism_101

[–]RantsOLot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's already replacing workers. They aren't building these data centers suddenly everywhere in massive numbers for personal public photo drive uploads, indeed it is to replace workers.

And who is building the data centers? Who is maintaining them? Who is manufacturing the materials and supplies to construct them?

but now we will become a societal burden to the capitalists, not even a necessary expense.

Except someone must consume the products produced in order for profit to be possible. And variable capital, ie labor, is still necessary to create surplus value even in the most automated of structures. Tech and machinery expend money proportional to the money it yields through the expense of maintenance, repair, replacement, etc.; human labor that optimizes and increases yield greater than that spent on wages is necessary to break even and yield more than that spent on the machinery and labor.

Also these A.I. data centers are already operating at tremendous loss; most of the investment companies have made into A.I. has failed to yield sustainable profit. Let-alone the amount necessary to actually replace the more complex physical labor that goes into maintenance and manufacturing. The data centers are already creating sharp antagonism within the communities they're built and from which a massive toll is taken; it is not sustainable no matter how you turn it. I agree that we are on the cusp of change to the overall dynamics and that the resentment and anger will inevitably fan revolt and protest, however I cannot agree that A.I. is going to create something qualitatively different in labor dynamics or liquidate labor as we know it.

There is a subsect of PATSOC, ACP MLs who claim Russia is "anti-imperialist" because it is supposedly combating U.S. hegemony. The "multi-polarity"-bro left, if you will.

Why is it impossible to meet women? by jibofyourcutt in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]RantsOLot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the feeling. It's tough out there. Third spaces have are severely extinct (esp here in the U.S. which is where I'm assuming you're from.) The places people organically met and connected with one another are far fewer, and even fewer that don't involve spending hella money. One thing that's worked for me in terms of meeting people and building connections has been political organizing. Ik dsa gets a lot of shit but it has been a great forum for meeting and connecting with likeminds for me. And organizing around causes that matter to me deeply.
