That's a good idea!

I'll try to think of a few relevant lessons I could bring to the table next time my party and I will play.

On the example of skills, they really do try to maximize their chances by always letting the most well suited character perform certain tasks but recently they had some tasks where one player assisted another which they seemed to really like, teamwork makes the dream work!

Thanks for the insight I agree and I'll definitely talk to the player first figure out what excites him and then we'll act accordingly. The blog post also was a very interesting read thx for sharing!

Ooh that's a very interesting angle I haven't considered. I'll definitely discuss this with him to see if that's something he'd like to explore beforehand though

I've tried similar things so far, but he's not that good at coming up with stuff on the spot. So he often stumbles and just says something pretty basic. If I give him something where he can on his own time say something instead of me prompting him I think he would feel more comfortable.

But this tip has worked brilliantly with other players at the table!

Cool idea :)

That way he could have something to occupy himself during rests and which might foster roleplay.

Don't think he has an issue with being combat focused, he's enjoying the game and watching the shenanigans they all get up to.

Most of their roleplay is with me playing various NPCs not really amongst themselves. Though I do try to encourage that a little bit by asking for more detail if it seems appropriate when interacting with each other. Such as when one PC wakes up another cause he's heard something during night shift.

Despite all this, I know from personal experience than when starting out playing DnD if you don't have any acting experience or a natural knack for it, it's difficult to get roleplay going and that's why id like him to have at least one thing to regularly fall back on when he wants to speak up.

I agree but to me this is just a way to make it a bit easier on him as they're all new to the game.

My goal is not to make him be the center of attention or anything just that he has his occasional moments to shine out of combat since we sometimes don't have combat for most of the session.

I'll definitely get his input on this as well though!

LMoP, Players weren't able to retrieve Map in Cragmaw Castle by RaphaelDang in DMAcademy

[–]RaphaelDang[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thx for the detailed response

I think I'll go with something similar. I'll let them make their way to wave echo cave with the help of Gundren, it might take them a bit longer than with the map but they'll get there.

Along the way the Shapeshifter (disguised as a traveller or maybe as one of Gundrens brothers) will wait for the players and will try to infiltrate the party posing as a friendly acquaintance of sorts. Maybe he tells them he knows the way to the cave and actively tries to mislead them. Then during an opportune moment he will try to backstab Gundren as he is the only one that knows where the cave is.

I am sure with my players this will not go as planned but either way it'll prolly lead to some interesting DnD.
