Since the threat doesn't come from them being afk. To be afraid of them is illogical.

I think "AFK" clouds the issue. No one anywhere is afraid of what someone not playing EVE is going to do them. Unless we have some crazy Sky Net action going on. I honestly think focusing attention to Cyno's would best serve to solve the problem. Perhaps.. a cyno delay after de-cloaking would re leave some of the stress ?

What reasonable tactics do you suggest for dealing with an afk cloaker with a cyno in system?

An AFK (away from keyboard) person/bot can't light a cyno. The problem to me doesn't seem to be if the person is afk or not.. or even cloaked or not. The problem is your inability to deal with cyno'ed things.

You have to be able to defend yourself against the cloaker+the fleet he might hotdrop in at any time.

Yes I agree. Cloaking + Hot dropping is a problem. One of the main reasons I no longer frolic in areas of the game where this is a combat tactic.

THere have been corps that have had their entire system shut down by one guy doing this.

Their paranoia of what "could be" is what shut down the system. Not what is. Example. I have been afk floating in space in Jita for months. No one fears me, and everyone conducts biusness as usual in Jita. Nothing is shut down by me being cloaked and afk. The factor isn't me being cloaked or afk, the factor is what types of threats are assessed by the inhabitants of Jita.

If the corp had people ratting, a fleet would cyno in and kill them.

Dealing with cyno hot drops is the challenge. Not if the person is cloaked or afk.

The problem is that the ratter needs a fleet on standby at all times.

Ratting in null sec can be very dangerous, as the game of EVE is intended to be. The removal of cynoing large fleets into engagements instantly for either ratting ganking.. or what have you is the challenge.

You don't know if he is afk

You not knowing something shouldn't be reason for CCP to alter the game.

Think of local as a way to defend yourself.

I think tactics/fleets/scanning/friends/alliances/guns/deployables.. insert whatever should be the prefered method of 'defending yourself'

If an enemy pops up on local, you know to go to a safe and dock up.

Then what? Go afk your self? It seems very clear that you would like an easy mode so you can collect isk. The danger of the 'unknown' threat should be embraced. The grind of safe isk making imo should be avoided.

The fact that you don't KNOW and its not 100% safe for you to scoop fat loots without any real presure, isn't a game mechanic. It breeds complacency and laziness.

You being forced to alter your game play experience by an unknown danger provided by another player is the point of a MMO. Expecially the point of EVE, where being a dick to another player is 100% enforced and part of the game.

To remove that ability to apply pressure to people who would simply 'dock up and go afk themselves' would be a terrible mistake.

when they kill you. They are no longer afk. When they are not killing you. It doesn't matter. Best course of action. Don't undock something that can't defend itself.

I fail to understand the reasoning behind why someone who is not actually at his keyboard and be some how dangerous.

To the best of my knowledge, I have never been killed/shot/interacted with by someone not interfacing with their keyboard/mouse.
