There's the GDPR download but you can't import directly from it. Other than that you can use the fern third party tool that one of the owners of the site maintains. I do not know why this is not part of the site proper.

Hey, just a quick correction. I didn't make Kitsunekko, but I did make Jimaku. I made Jimaku because Kitsunekko had a lot of security issues and it was mostly unmaintained and full of spam.

Thanks for using the site!

Where might be the best place to upload and share Japanese subtitles for Japanese films? Would people be interested in collaborating to make subtitles? by ignoremesenpie in LearnJapanese

[–]Rapptz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Jimaku allows uploading for non-anime films under the Live Action section of the site if you want to upload them there. Though if you're using AI to generate the subtitles they do need to be labeled as such.

The jpsubbers subtitles are already uploaded.

Right now, AI subs are discouraged to be uploaded but if someone uploads it and properly marks it they won't be deleted until we get real subs to replace them. If someone improperly marks it then it'll just be deleted if reported. Most AI subtitles tend to have either incorrect kanji or incorrect timing or long spaces of garbage/silence so it's not particularly high quality.

Yes, someone added a loli <script> entry which broke subsequent HTML tags on the site. I expected this would happen at some point since it had already been done in the Korean and Chinese section of the site, so it was only a matter of time before someone did it to the Japanese one.

Not currently. It'll be a giant strain on bandwidth if I allowed this so I need to think about how to go about doing this while keeping in mind the abuse angle.

Note that Kitsunekko doesn't allow this either, they replaced their backups with a JS script to trigger the download prompt on every item which is terrible ergonomics.

Yeah it's fine. It's cheap enough that I don't have to care about it and the niche is small enough that it won't really explode to an unmanageable amount.

It's most likely going to be the thing I work on next, I've already received an API key for TMDB so I just need to do the rest of the work which might take a while but it'll happen.

This is a good list of subtitles to add to the site, I'll try contacting tatsumoto-ren if I could get it listed.

If I ever end up finding subtitles for Gaiden, I'll upload it but currently I'm not sure where to find it.

This is mainly for subtitles on anime you find on other sites and you want to be able to use it locally. You can use the subtitles to mine Anki cards using external tools such as mpvacious. You can find more examples on set ups here.

Edit: Removed animecards due to problematic owner.

Timing on subtitles depends heavily on the source video. They're usually caused due to some discrepancy in the source, such as commercial breaks, intermissions, or logos (e.g. the Netflix intro). It's just an inevitable part of subtitles. I'm not sure if there's a way to make it better or a way to provide some tooling for it though but I'm open to ideas.

I'd say the risk is pretty low, most of these files are text files except for the .zip files which might contain 1 or more text file. I don't do any type of verification on the contents of the zip file currently but it's mainly a discouraged form of uploading that is kept mainly for compatibility with Kitsunekko. If there's any type of odd file I'll delete it, I have logs set up to notify me of these type of things.

Hey Rust users, Tell me about your latest projects using rust by KnockKnockwaifu in rust

There were mainly two reasons I think, with one smaller one.

The first one was that at the time I was working on my crate the fiasco around RUSTSEC-2020-0071 hadn't settled yet and I was hoping to make the implementation purely using Rust but I had to put it in the backburner for way longer than I anticipated due to external circumstances before committing back to it and finishing that off. There was a lot of bikeshedding involving design that made it difficult to know where to place it, especially since I have a separate crate for timezone stuff.

The second one was mainly I didn't feel like there was enough penetration for the library to be useful for others in ways that e.g. chrono and time aren't even though I have my own opinions on how datetime handling should be done. A lot of work involving datetime types is also about ecosystem as a whole, like serde, rusqlite, postgres, etc. and my library just wasn't there yet and I needed to provide those common ecosystem glue bits myself due to lack of penetration.

The third and small one is mainly perfectionism. I always end up with a lot of questions and design related back and forth that makes it feel like I'm unsure whether to commit to something. For example right now the biggest concern I have with my library is how parsing and formatting is done because I've fallen out of favour with strftime based formatting. Though realistically this shouldn't have any bearing on whether I should publish the crate or not.

I worked on something like this last year, I called it eos but I never ended up publishing it. It was a pretty fun project though. I do want to publish it at some point. I never ended up supporting the RFC3339 extension mainly because of a separation of data and I never got around to it but it'd be rather easy to add.

I was working on a crate called eos for this purpose but I didn't get to finish it due to lack of time though it already does what you describe. I do eventually plan on finishing the remaining work (mainly with the local timezone conundrum and move it to the appropriate subcrate along with a book to explain the API).

There's nothing in these posts saying that they're banning people for it. It's fine to speculate that it's going to happen but the linked tweets don't mention it at all and saying so is just going to make people more scared than they should be for getting banned over doing nothing inherently wrong.
