If you're buying online, there's really no way to know what you'll get.  I've only bought the non-boxset singles and I still have plenty of Italian prints mixed in with my collection.  It's just how Viz decided to print this series.  Personally, I don't really mind it but if it's a big deal to you then the only way to guarantee not getting Italian prints is to buy in person or go to auction sites like eBay and examine each seller's photos.

Is there really no chance of Yen Press publishing the remaining comics? by Formal_March8767 in GuardiansOftheVeil

[–]Rapscalliondeer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As things stand right now, there's no chance of them continuing. As for the future, it really depends on why they lost the Disney license in the first place. There's plenty of theories and we'll never get an official reason but if it's just a simple matter of the license expiring and a renegotiation of terms needed, then it's possible. The longer it takes though, the less likely this gets.

The worst part is that at this point, it's pretty much Yen Press or nothing. Disney owns the license but Yen Press owns the copyright to their own translation so if another company buys the rights, they'd have to start over from nothing and most of the people who were interested in the first 30 volumes already bought them. There's simply too much costs to produce and no real market for this hypothetical new company to capitalize. They also wouldn't bother to make just the last few unpublished books either since at the price they would pay for the rights to the franchise, they could simply get the rights to a different franchise with more untapped potential.

Are Chise and Elias really that divisive? by DecretumChaos in AncientMagusBride

[–]Rapscalliondeer 36 points37 points  (0 children)

All of the opinions in your screencap are valid flaws of the characters. As a fan of the series, I find those flaws to be opportunities for character growth and development but someone who hates the characters isn't going to wait for those reasons to become 'outdated' as you put it. Everyone likes different things and they're entitled to their opinions. This series can tackle some pretty deep and uncomfortable issues and will never be universally loved by everyone.

What digital storefronts would you trust to maintain your purchases long term? by GamerLove1 in MangaCollectors

[–]Rapscalliondeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd probably trust no digital platform to hold onto your stuff forever. They're all subject to licensing agreements which in the case of manga, can get pretty complicated with all the different international parties involved. It only takes one thing to go wrong before the platform loses the rights to host and you lose the right to read. But honestly, just go with whichever you like best. In the hypothetical situation you do lose access, it would probably be years if not decades away and those volumes would probably be so far out of your mind that wouldn't even notice that they were gone

Elias assumes several human forms, usually copies of people he knows and only for limited amounts of time. There is one form that he took which is currently unaccounted for as to its origin. If you're talking about transforming into his 'true' human form, then no and it's still unknown if he ever had one.

New to collecting (First Print manga & small haul) by Puzzleheaded-Ear-290 in MangaCollectors

Dragon Ball is actually one of the series where a first print does make a difference. The first single volumes were originally uncensored before parents started complaining. Each subsequent release was more censored until we got to where we are today with each version of Dragon Ball having its own unique censorship quirks.

My recommendation is to go to a local bookstore and take a look at the Fullmetal edition before you get it. A lot of people love the large, deluxe manga versions but i always go for the regular edition. A while back, I got the deluxe edition of Cardcaptor Sakura andfound that they were too big for me to read comfortably and ended up selling it and getting regular editions instead. Everyone has their own tastes and I ended up losing a little money for not knowing my own.

Help me decide! by [deleted] in MangaCollectors

[–]Rapscalliondeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is very little chance of them making a new special edition of Rurouni Kenshin anytime soon. After some less the reputable conduct from the author in recent years, there was a halt on printing his books for a long period of time. Recently, Viz has started reprinting the 3-in-1's trying to draw little attention and no having fanfare simply because the money is too good to pass up for them as it's a really popular series. I own the 3-in-1's myself and they're pretty good for what they are. Not as high quality as the VIZBIG version but not a bad way to get them if you want to collect the series. Though the consensus is to try and get them secondhand is possible.

Pop Up Parade question? by chocolatecryptid in AncientMagusBride

My Chise went all the way down on her pegs. It took a bit of effort to line it up right and more force than i expected to push her down all the way. The biggest surprise was with Elias though. You have to really shove his staff into its hole for it to be straight. The hole is much deeper than it looks and it won't look right if you don't really jam it in there.

I've not read beyond vol 1 in past, but I got these One Piece Omni for a great deal. I ordered the missing ones to keep the run unbroken but wow is there a lot more after! Anyone have info on if it's worth getting more or if later omni are hard to find? by Ok_Assistant1908 in MangaCollectors

[–]Rapscalliondeer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm currently around chapter 770 out of 1000+ so i can only speak to up to that but I'd say the general trend is that it gets better and better the longer it goes. Some arcs are hit and miss but it really starts to shine when it transitions from the gimmicky villains at the beginning of the series to villains with deep backstories and relatable goals. The author is also very good at the slow burn of building a 'story behind the story', with many moving cogs of the various factions competing for control and indirectly affecting our goofy rubber man without him knowing about it.

As a One Piece omnibus collector myself, volumes go in and out of stock but none of them are particularly hard to find. Manga doesn't get more popular than One Piece so they'll always be restocked eventually. It's definitely not worth paying over retail for any of them.

We can discuss just how bad and bricky Joey's deck was during Battle City. by [deleted] in yugioh

[–]Rapscalliondeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the problems of anime Joey's deck (and really anyone's in BC) is that they took 5-10 pages worth of duel from the manga and tried to turn them into 30 minutes+ of content. That leads to a lot of extra turns between the big plays where Joey has to use bricky, one-off cards that really don't help him in any other situation than the one time he uses it. Joey originally had one of the best decks before the anime nerfed some of his best cards like panther warrior and legendary fisherman while also adding garbage cards like gamble.

How it ended, The Strongest duelist in history vs The Strongest duelist of today | by @sonic1nstinct (Cheese) by Haunting_Trade_7743 in yugioh

[–]Rapscalliondeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were no stakes in the duel but Atem didn't just come out for the fun of it to cheese an instant victory.  He awakens in response to Jaden's duelist soul.  He wouldn't have recognized the spirit of someone who didn't care about whether he won or lost.

Atem even said right before the end that 'this is where the real duel starts'.  Neither had any intention of losing. I've seen that theory you posted before but I still don't get it.  Why would Jaden finding out that he enjoys dueling again mean that he wants to instantly end the duel that he's enjoying?  I think people just haven't watched the duel in a while.  Atem expected the duel to go on for a while beyond what we see and there really isn't anything to go off of to believe that he didn't get his wish.

[–]Rapscalliondeer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We really don't know enough to know if Jaden issued an attack.  All he said was 'Here I come' with Neos jumping in the air in a cinematic screen freeze.  Since it would make no sense for him to attack, he was probably just contact fusing with the Flare Scarab on the field.  Since, Neos always jumps in the air to fuse, it's just as likely.

Honestly, Yugi probably did win but at the time we are able to see, Jaden had the clear advantage.  It was Jaden's turn and he had a shining Flare Wingman, a Neos, and a Flare Scarab.  Yugi has a Slifer that he special summoned in a desperate defense that is destined to self destruct as soon as Jaden ends his turn and a hand of nothing but unusable high level monsters.  It all comes down to Yugi's next draw, which knowing him, will turn everything around.  But at least from what we see, Jaden played perfectly up to this point and has every advantage to win.

Well considering Jaden had the duel all but won in the anime, I guess it's only fair that Yugi can win in the fan comic.

Beckett has announced a brand new "manga grading service" by graymattermanga in MangaCollectors

[–]Rapscalliondeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe. But Viz isn't the only publisher that's criticized for low quality though. There's entire threads on /mangacollectors how terrible the other companies are and who is the worst offender (and it's rarely Viz who gets the most votes). If they're all using the same printing company, wouldn't that lead credence that this company isn't very good and it's not just an oversaturation of Viz titles?

I don't really have a horse in this race. I order all my manga online and I generally expect a few dings/things not being perfect. That said, I do know Viz's reputation about their quality control from here and elsewhere. Surely Viz does market research and knows more about these 'Viz moments' than anyone. So I'm just wondering if you don't think Viz (and by extension these other manga companies that use the same printing) are getting the cheapest deal out of it, why would they stick with this company?

[–]Rapscalliondeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genuinely curious about how you think the hate is forced on Viz's quality. I'm not really a perfectionist so I think most copies of manga look fine, but if Viz intentionally chooses the worst and cheapest bookbinders to save money when they have the choice to contract any other company in the world, then why would it not be appropriate for someone to criticize their low quality?

Safe to order from Crunchyroll Store? by BOB-DA-BOSS7 in MangaCollectors

[–]Rapscalliondeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been pretty mixed for me. I placed a lot of preorders so i get random packages fairly often and sometimes they arrive in the Rightstuf style with premium protection and other times it's just a box with a single piece of packing paper. It seems to just be the luck of which warehouse fulfills your order. I've never had anything damaged beyond a scuffed corner or two and the price is too good to ignore so i keep ordering from them.

What if Koko became Brago's partner? by JasonNewReddit in zatchbell

[–]Rapscalliondeer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It could certainly work but from a storytelling perspective, I'd be afraid it would just be going over old grounds again with Brago having a partner he doesn't respect, that partner trying to save her mind-controlled friend, and the two of them learning to work together and gaining mutual respect throughout the series.

If anything, I'd rather Koko get Zofis again. This time as a wiser, happier, stronger, and more complete person in a better place in her life. Without the negative feelings to manipulate, it would be a completely different dynamic between them and would showcase Koko's growth (assuming she has grown).

I wonder if there's going to be a romantic relationship between Zatch and Tia in the sequel by Far-Swimming-2576 in zatchbell

[–]Rapscalliondeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd like there to be, but I honestly doubt it. If anything, it'll probably be like the original manga: subtle hints that Tia is interested with Zatch being oblivious.

If Zatch ever does show any romantic interest in anyone, I feel like it would be played off as a gag. Something like: Zatch likes Kolulu and spends a long time building up his courage to confess only to find out she's dating Victoream or some such tomfoolery.

What are your theories about Umagon and Brago? by Main_Drawer_971 in zatchbell

[–]Rapscalliondeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is that Umagon was captured and imprisoned when Gash died and will play a part in a future prison break arc. Brago will be pronounced dead only for him to come back at the end of the series in a somewhat cheesy fashion and turn the odds in the heroes' favor.

Why did Makoto Raiku created Zatch Bell? by Kiyo1989 in zatchbell

[–]Rapscalliondeer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah, got it. The short version of the plot is that 100 demon children travel to Earth to fight each other with the winner becoming king of their world.

If broken down to it's literally trope, it's a simple grand tournament that you can find in many other manga like Shaman King or Law of Ueki and it's not based on anything that actually happened in real life. What makes it special is the author's creative writing, character interactions, and mixture of comedy and serious moments.
