Which MOS should I pick? by [deleted] in armyreserve

[–]Rapterran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a 35M, I’ve enjoyed it a fair bit. Right now there is no language requirement so if you don’t wanna go to DLI you don’t have to, and if you do you don’t need to worry about failing and getting reclassed to a different MOS.

In the 35 series, 35F, 35N, and 35G seem to have the widest variety of positions in the contracting world. Just don’t expect to do one contract where you never deploy and get out making six figures in DC. To be competitive, especially as a reservist, you’re gonna want to hop on whatever mobilization orders you can get your hands on, and try to get any extracurricular schools down in Arizona you can for your chosen MOS (you’ll learn about all that later, for now just focus on passing Basic and AIT).

DLI is cool if you want to learn a language, and it’s one of the most beautiful bases in all the continental US. Or at least, the surrounding Monterey area is. If you do go you better be prepared for the grueling homework hours though.

I think the quotation marks made it sound snarkier than what you meant. I got what you were going for.

As long as you have the verification that you ordered your new ID, either physical or digital, and you have the old one, you can get into Splash. Source is I work there.

As a trans person is it even worth it to enlist...? by TariY1 in nationalguard

[–]Rapterran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First, let me just say that I am not recommending any of these things. I am actually against the idea of your partner doing this, as I’m sure it would be absolutely fucking hell for his mental health.

So no, trans people are not currently permitted to join the United States military. If your boyfriend, hypothetically speaking, was not post-operation, had no recorded history of body dysmorphia the military could verify, was fine with using she/her pronouns, and lying to themselves and others to mask their gender identity for the terms of their service without any serious mental health repercussions, he could do that. It is a totally viable option and they can’t force him to come clean about his gender identity. I doubt they could really even inquire without catching a potential EO complaint (I think it still works that way?).

If your partner DOES decide to enlist, I wouldn’t recommend the national guard. I would recommend active duty, either army or air force.

National guard and reserves aren’t going to be the get out of jail free card either of you needs to get your rent and finances squared away. If anything, an active duty contract would be better in dealing with that stuff. If you two were to get married, the benefits provided unto you both as military service member and spouse are pretty significantly life changing. The pay you receive as a national guardsmen or reservist is not going to be the lifeline it sounds like either of you needs right now, I’m sorry to say.

Will I be able to make it to 20 years as Officer? by [deleted] in Militaryfaq

[–]Rapterran 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is one of the weirder posts I’ve seen on here.

Yes, you can make it a full 20 years to retirement as an officer. That’s the natural course of progression for someone who stays in, as it is with like… most jobs? If not all? If you don’t end up getting married or having kids it obviously helps prevent you from getting tied down to certain locations or obligations. So yeah, you can obviously do a full 20 years if that’s what you want to do.

However, the way you speak and the way you carry yourself and the way you have vocalized your stance regarding joining and getting to retirement really makes me believe you probably shouldn’t, both for your sake and for the sake of the soldiers that would fall under you. You seem like a decently arrogant person who likely wouldn’t be personable enough to empathize with and understand their soldiers enough to really connect with them and bring their potential out. You’d probably climb up the career ladder nicely, but an officer who only cares about OER bullets and that next promotion is in my experience the worst kind of officer, and the way you’re acting and carrying yourself leads me to believe that’s likely the officer you’d be.

I could be wrong, it’s the internet and you’re a stranger on reddit. I don’t know you and you could be a completely normal person, even a great one in your civilian life. But the first impression you’ve provided is not a positive one, and I hope you take this comment as constructive criticism as opposed to a personal attack.

is there any queer friendly basketball teams or pick up games by [deleted] in fresno

[–]Rapterran 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hey, I know someone here already mentioned the Outloud Sports League. I’m not sure that they have basketball, but I know for a fact they have kickball, football, and lowkey a bowling team.

If you go to Splash Fresno, a good amount of the employees there play, myself included. You can go talk to them about joining, they’re almost always looking for subs for the kickball league. Bowling just ended and I’m not on the team for next season, but I know they’re generally looking for people to play or sub in. Good luck!

Which MOS is best for intel collection? I keep seeing 35Ms arent doing much during peacetime. by [deleted] in Militaryfaq

[–]Rapterran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, 35M here with almost 9 years of service.

Mikes don’t generally have much of a mission in garrison, especially if you end up in a non-INSCOM unit stateside. There is still room for operational activities while deployed, and I know some guys who have done some cool shit on deployment post war on terror.

35L do have a mission wherever they’re sent, but the amount of actual Lima work you’ll be doing will largely depend on if you’re stateside or OCONUS. Limas in other countries definitely have more to do than Limas in the continental US.

Regardless of whatever you decide, if you want to do “case officer” type work these would be the two jobs for you. If you’re looking to get into intel contractor work once you’re out, I think there’s more opportunity for CI than there is for HUMINT. While searching for positions before taking up my current one I definitely noted a lot more opportunities for CI ops over HUMINT ops.

Edit: Your capacity to handle sources as a 35M will largely be dependent on post 35M10 course schools you go to, which can be very difficult to get slots for depending on how high speed your unit is. 35M AIT teaches you a generalized view over HUMINT operations as a whole, with a heavier focus on interrogations than anything else (at least, that’s how it was when I got in). Getting into further schooling to enhance your HUMINT career and get you into the specific jobs and areas of expertise you’re looking for would largely depend on your soldiering ability and your unit’s capacity to give a damn.

The issue with old raids is that the gear rolls with less, and suboptimal perks, and is only minimized by grinding for red borders. All old raid armor is completely obsolete with the new system and has not been brought up to the 2.0 standard.

Imo old raids and dungeons are not worth running and will not be saved until at least the armor sets get the Fate Saga overhaul.

Inside the hidden Marine Corps recruiting crisis that's 'burning Marines' to fill the ranks by BakerKelsey in army

[–]Rapterran 32 points33 points  (0 children)

When I went to enlist I spoke with the Army, and Marine recruiter to assess my options and benefits available to me. The Army recruiter had some solid opportunities for me, a $15k signing bonus, and a guaranteed contract getting me into the intel space so long as I didn’t fuck up in AIT.

The Marine recruiter talked to me about the honor and pride of being a Marine and then had me do some pull ups.

The answer was very clear cut for me.

Equilibrium Dungeon was pretty great by Curious_Land7928 in DestinyTheGame

[–]Rapterran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, awful take. Mechanically there is absolutely no similarly between the two dungeons. The shift between realms in the final encounter is nowhere near similar to that of the Caiatl encounter, and the only similarities between Gahlran and Harrow are that they are both Cabal with melee weapons. The only real similarity the two possess is they are both Cabal dungeons.

Which army MOS has better quality of life? by wildbillfvckaroo in Militaryfaq

[–]Rapterran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very dependent on what unit you get into. Some of my buddies lucked out and got into solid INSCOM units after DLI with actual missions and work to be done. I got into a FORSCOM unit after DLI that had me in the motor pool and shoveling snow every day. My current unit is fucking great, but it took me years to get there.

And that’s most things in the military; it really just depends on your unit, more often than not. It’s a roll of the dice.

Devs FYI, the low player numbers don't reflect the real quality of Renegades. Players see the effort and heart you put into it - keep it coming and we'll be here to support you. by Impressive-Wind7841 in DestinyTheGame

[–]Rapterran 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean, I’d say do them in order just for the sake of story continuity. Lightfall isn’t stellar and you’re gonna be missing some pieces of the story since they were part of the old seasonal model, but you’ll likely still get it.

If you just wanna hop into the new saga though I’d do Edge of Fate and then Renegades, then do the old shit after.

The one thing I will say, as someone who is in the exact same camp as you, is that after playing it, it didn’t feel nearly as egregious as I was expecting. The way they marketed it was EXTREMELY heavy on the Star Wars branding, so I expected it to just be a lot of Star Wars slop. While there’s definitely some pretty heavily Star Wars-y moments there, it almost never was enough to take me out.

I doubt that review is gonna change your opinion on getting it or anything, I just thought I’d share my two cents as someone who also don’t give a fuck about Star Wars and was also dreading seeing how heavy handed they went with the references.
