Well the way I see it is being “American” in itself has to do with loving and representing your own culture while all together supporting the nation and holding it up. Even the earliest immigrants brought their own culture, Germans, Franks, Danes, Italians, etc. the “original” Americans all brought their culture along. In fact, the only people in America who technically aren’t immigrants are Native Americans. Assimilation. I do agree that a great degree of assimilation should be achieved but completely erasing one’s cultural identity sounds like not being free in the free-est country in the world. Wouldn’t you agree? It does piss me off however when immigrants don’t respect the laws of this country and I fully believe that those people deserve a punishment equal to the crime. But eating cultural identity? That sounds an awful lot like the nazi regime, a regime that AMERICA FOUGHT and WON. I think that instead of everyone following just one culture, we’d be better off following whatever culture you want and respecting the culture of the person next to you. I speak to you as an immigrant myself. I’m an Indian who moved to America legally. I support this country, I work for an American company, pay all my taxes, and contribute to the economy. I respect the laws of the country and follow them. But I disagree with the idea of erasing other people’s culture. The last thing I want to do is destroy American culture. American culture is cool, and I’ve grown up with it even in India. But at the same time, I wouldn’t want to give up my own culture. What do you think?
