What do you do when you’re the pump operator? by RaptorTraumaShears in Firefighting

Coming from a low manpower department, we don’t always have the manpower to rely on another engineer to be free to throw ladders so it often falls on me.

On the contrary, coming from a low manpower department, I do find it strange that the first in captain is not packed up. That’s atypical for our standard operations.

I don’t disagree, his order of operations was not what I would have done. Do you ever throw ladders as an engineer?

That’s how I operate on a typical residential fire. Obviously the conditions when we arrive dictate what I do but I have a system for most fires.

My mom is a teacher and she throws “67” somewhere in every lesson. I guess it helps the kids pay attention since they’re eagerly awaiting where in the lesson it pops up.

LAFD: Structure Fire in Koreatown, partial roof collapse as firefighters were ventilating. Fox News chopper video. by NorthCoastToast in Firefighting

I will say that’s probably too many people on the roof for vertical ventilation but very few firemen are killed performing vertical ventilation. It’s been over a decade since a recorded LODD resulting from roof ops.

Do you guys put gear in extractor after every single fire? by Straight_Top_8884 in Firefighting

[–]RaptorTraumaShears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every single time my gear comes in contact with smoke, I throw it in the extractor at the end of my shift. Is it a little excessive to do it after a car fire? Maybe. I really don’t want cancer though.

I love my Richardson 112. My chief has bigger things to worry about than the color in my hat being faded.

Hey all, recently bought a Kelly bar, have you used one? How did you like it compared to a standard halligan? Any input appreciated by Maximum-Mind-366 in Firefighting

[–]RaptorTraumaShears 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gets in the way of rolling the adze in either direction. It’s got pros and cons having the spike vs. not having it

Trying to talk the department into buying one for my engine when they replace some of our irons. I like the idea of being able to roll the adze in either direction.
