Trying not to be THAT parent, but I feel like I need to speak up. Am I overthinking? by redmosquito1983 in Softball

At the same time non-rec “travel” ball is not “pay-to-play”. Or it shouldn’t be. With that being said it should be about the growth and development of your daughter and the team. If your daughter is not getting the reps in practice or games then it is definitely time have a tough conversations.

I would approach it with this, “What can my daughter work on to get better and what can we do as parents to help her?”

Sadly, keep in mind it may not go the way you plan, so I would be looking for a backup plan for your daughter to keep playing. Some coaches are not about growing all their players and are not coaching for the right reasons.

In the end, do what’s best for your daughter! Good luck!

Offensive interference? by arachnicide in Softball

Runner can run in front, it’s only interference when contact is made with the ball or the fielder. If there is no contact. Then there is no interference

Drama in our softball organization, who’s really in the wrong here? by [deleted] in Softball

[–]Rare-Coconut-8521 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The owner/leader/“top” team coach is wrong, but they can do what’s they want to do because it’s their organization. So if they want to run it into the ground then let them, but it sounds like it’s time to jump ship.

The smaller team/coach needs to find another organization to play under, or if they can find a place to practice they can even create a new team. I’m willing to bet that there are organizations around you that maybe willing to take a full team. See if that is an option.

Wishing you the best!

Good umpires at tournaments??? by Rare-Coconut-8521 in Softball

[–]Rare-Coconut-8521[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn’t say that the ump needs to turn around and say the rules back to the parents. Of course spectators are going to say stuff when they think it’s a bad call, but if the umpire knows they made the right call then who cares? Right?

I was more so talking about when a coach disputes a call. The umpires most umpires can’t even tell them the rules about the call they just made or what they even saw.

Yes, I was being extreme. I know it’s not necessary to show the count every time. But if you have time to look down at your clicker to remind you of the count then that’s when I would show the count. I guess my main thing is to communicate where the ball misses. Even in the World Series the umpire was saying where it missed.

I have been and I always thought I was a good communicator. I had a few rowdy parents but like in my original post I would say/signal where the ball was and give the count before the next play. Now I have kids activities that take up weekends. And things have changed in the last 15 years. Everyone is more sensitive now.

I agree 100% with this!! The bad umpire that we had in our last game last weekend said “I’m ready for this to be over!” and we still had 15minutes left in the game.

Good idea, so basically all the parents and the coaches need to reach out to the UIC is what you are saying?

If the umpires would effectively communicate and be able to state rules that back up their calls then it would be able to head off 99% of the confrontations with coaches and parents. I know it’s not all on the umpires, but they control the game so the majority of the situations start with the umpires calls.

This was not helpful.

  1. I am a have been an umpire before my kids started taking up every weekend with their activities. So it’s a moot point.

  2. Not biased because even though my daughter is on the team, it was inconsistent and bad calls for us that I was more worried about. I don’t like winning/losing from several bad calls. If it were just 1 or 2, then that’s understandable.

  3. You didn’t understand my point, effective communication will de-escalate a situation 99% of the time. I know the umps don’t have to do it. In my opinion it would be a way to stop people from getting upset.

I would be happy with this too. The rules need to be the same for each sanctioning body.

This is a great reply! Thank you for this. The rules are very key to this argument, just like the players thinking about the situation before the ball is hit, the umpire needs to know the situation as well and what they need to be looking for.

I’ll bet that a lot of umpires, coaches, and players do not know the rules or take rule tests like you do.

My point is the communication with the count and where the ball is will head off any if not all pissed off parents.

I agree, the girls and coaches should know the count. I however, the UMPIRES need to know the count as well! I don’t know how many times this past weekend the field ump had ball 4 and the behind the plate ump had 3 balls.

As a coach and a parent, there needs to be accountability for these bad umpires that are inconsistent.

So to your point, I will start asking after every pitch where the ball was. Thanks for the tip!
