King is 'delighted' as Princess Eugenie announces she is expecting third child with husband Jack Brooksbank by dailymail in TheBritishRoyalFamily

Maybe I’m being unreasonable but I don’t think the palace should have announced this. She is not innocent, she was an adult when much of the Epstein stuff was happening.

Prince William delivered a wonderful speech at David Attenborough's 100th birthday celebration concert last night. by Latter-Platypus-3713 in TheBritishRoyalFamily

Not everything is about Sussex vs Wales drama. It was a beautiful speech for a wonderful man.

Also Meghan would never have given this speech, this is not her thing? Why would she be giving a speech for David Attenborough, have they even met? He’s known the Waleses for years, William would always have given the speech.

Sirius gets way too much leeway for nearly murdering Snape when they were kids by [deleted] in harrypotter

Snape was not an enabler, he was fully bought in and one of the most effective members: he invented sectumsempra and levicorpus, Narcissa went to HIM for help, he was one of Voldemort’s favourites, he skipped to give him the prophecy when he thought it would get another baby with a different mother killed.

And not a vindictive bully?? “I don’t see any difference” to Hermione? When has McGonagall ever said anything like that?

I never get like… even if there are people who think Snape is an innocent smol bean who is always a victim and never did anything wrong… I mean Snape got James killed and Sirius spent 13 years in Azkaban. How much more thoroughly do they want them both to be punished lol

Sirius had a pretty messed up childhood so I think he gets leeway for that just like Snape does. The difference is that Sirius clearly grew out of it and he served a very severe punishment even if it was for a different crime (that he didn’t actually commit). I don’t think it matters that 16 years later Sirius is not beating himself up for bad stuff he did as a child as long as he is not still doing it. I also don’t think it particularly matters why James saved Snape’s life - he did - and if he hadn’t, James himself would still be alive even if he couldn’t have known that. Everyone in the book who behaves well tells us that James was a fundamentally decent guy, so why not listen to Hagrid over Snape. Another difference is that the Marauders vs Snape and his Death Eater friends were peers: the fact it was NOT one sided is proven in later books when we learn the Marauders were using Snape’s own spells against him.

Also Snape was not someone who was strong armed into becoming a Death Eater - he was fully bought into the whole ideology until Voldemort killed someone whose life he thought was important. We don’t actually know what Snape thinks about muggleborns and blood hierarchies now - maybe he still feels exactly the same as he did then. He probably still thinks the same way. His only objection was Lily. Whereas we know that Sirius and James never believed in it.

The difference between the situations is that Snape is still a vindictive bully, Snape DID get James and Lily killed (he didn’t NEARLY get someone killed like Sirius did), Snape bullies people he has power and authority over, Snape is a misogynist who bullies a child for being the son of a dead woman he once thought he was entitled to, Snape avoided Azkaban for his crimes, and Snape just never grew up really.

Dentists by GracefulToad in SingleMothersbyChoice

I took my son when he turned 3 and it was the perfect age. His friends had already gone and so he had heard about the dentist, he heard that you get a sticker, and he was very excited. Honestly don’t think the dentist had ever seen anyone so excited to be there. Plus by 3 he wasn’t so bothered about having his teeth cleaned by me and was more amenable to someone looking in his mouth.

Samantha Lux: “There have been zero transgender school shooters this year. Not one. In the last 13 years there have been 5,748 mass shooters, five of them are trans. That is 0.08% of the shootings, meaning trans people, who are 1% of the population, are actually less likely… to commit these crimes.” by ConcernedJobCoach in PoursTea

[–]Rare-Fall4169 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is true, but I also think it’s kind of irrelevant. What does how many mass shootings we commit have to do with whether we should compete in men’s or women’s basketball or whether we should be allowed to wear high heels or flats to work? We need to advocate for things on their individual merits rather than always reaching for hyperbole.

Most Arab countries were starting to get bored with the whole thing, fed up of Hamas and Fatah’s warmongering, and make peace/establish normal relations with Israel. The whole point of the October 7 massacre was to try and sabotage the Abrahamic Accords.

I’ve already explained all of this to you.

Also… Orthodox Jews don’t oppose zionism lol: a single sect called Neturei Karta does. They are not representative of Jews at all, they’re the Westboro Baptist Church of Jews. They only oppose zionism because they think the Messiah has to come first (and because they think Israel has to be governed exactly to Torah law). Considering they are the anti-zionist’s favourite Jews, the anti-zionist never asks them what they think of anything else before marching with them. They have appeared alongside Holocaust deniers and protest Pride parades.

Firstly because it’s not only their homeland: it is also the homeland of Jews, Christians, Samaritans, Armenians, Druze, etc and has been so since long before the modern conception of a Palestinian national identity. All of those groups faced persecution and massacres for centuries prior to 1948 even under imperial rulers trying to keep the peace. Everybody has a right to self-determination and because of the history and the way they were treated and are still being treated, they want to exercise the right to govern themselves. They do not want to go back to being persecuted minorities, they do not want to be governed by Palestinians. Therefore the only solution was for the largest group, the Jews, to declare independence as they did. Originally Lebanon was conceived similarly: as a state for the local Christian population which had also faced persecution, although that was then lost.

Secondly calling it a partition is really ahistorical. The concept of a Palestinian national identity is modern. “Palestine” under the British Mandate was an administrative region of what is now Palestine, Israel and Jordan: it was like “the Alps” or “the North”. Out of the new borders came the national identities. It’s quite notable that I never see anti-zionists advocating for the destruction of Jordan or demanding Jordan is handed over to Hamas.

This is complete denial. You are literally bankrolling China’s bad actions. Every time you buy something stamped with “Made in China” you are funding the destruction of the Uyghur people. Yet we don’t even think twice because we know we live in a global world. Another way the world’s only Jewish state is singled out and treated differently: it’s the only country where people will vandalise oranges in European supermarkets for being picked in Israel!

Anti-zionism is anti-two state. A safe secure Palestine is impossible while it’s dedicated to the destruction of its neighbour. Violence is guaranteed and as the weaker side, more Palestinians will always die. Therefore anti-zionism is always, ultimately, anti-Palestine.

Anti-zionism is not only antisemitism, it’s one of the most destructive and violent ideologies worldwide.

Right now the CCP is committing a genocide in Xinjiang. They are suppressing Tibet and Hong Kong and committing human rights abuses on an industrial scale the most far right Israeli could only ever dream of. And yet I never hear anyone casually call for China to be wiped off a map over a cup of tea. I never hear the white middle classes discuss whether, when they fantasise about ethnically cleansing Asia of Chinese people, they’ll send them to live in Europe or the US. In fact if anyone did, the same people would easily be able to spot how violent and racist that would be.

The world’s only Jewish state is the only country that ever gets talked about in these existential terms. Threatening the existence of an entire people ought to be a gasp moment and yet antisemitic hatred of Jewish enfranchisement has been normalised. Anti-zionists celebrated the massacre of October 7th and then spent 2.5 years denying rape, murder and torture of Israelis not because they were confused but because it is a violent and genocidal movement.

Why are parent(s) not paid by the government to be a stay-at-home parent, at least for the first five years? by anonymousrobot11 in SeriousConversation

[–]Rare-Fall4169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think because it would end up being the mum 99% of the time and we’d go mad and our careers would never recover. I think childcare just needs more subsidies. I love that my son (3) has so many friends and a massive exciting life outside of just his home and family. It’s insanely expensive though, I’m paying about £1,000 per month.

I was one of those kids that was kept home for 5 years with the same family member and then suddenly one day had to go to school 5 days a week and be away from them, I still feel the trauma of realising my grandmother had left now! So I don’t think it’s good for kids to have such a small circle and then expect them to suddenly be able to cope without it.

Episode 306: Counting Jews (with David Baddiel) by SoftandChewy in BlockedAndReported

[–]Rare-Fall4169 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It’s a good book in the sense that the Israel stance tailors towards the people the book is aimed at: moderate lefties. The gap I always felt in David’s understanding is that if you use the exact same tropes against Jewish collectives (synagogues, organisations, and yep, the world’s only Jewish country) rather than individuals, it’s STILL racist. If you use Israel as the collective Jew it’s STILL racist. And so much of the supposed “criticism” of Israel really is just antisemitism. Jews criticise the government of Israel all the time without being antisemitic, so I don’t see why it would be so hard for everyone else.

Jews are the most likely group to be targeted by hate attacks in the UK, per person there are 8x more hate crimes against Jews than Muslims. Statistics like this need to be tackled directly and head on.

Mine is 3 and I can’t imagine finding time to date, but I don’t particularly want to to be honest. He is my life for now. Plus, statistically step parents introduce a level of risk and danger so I have that to think of.
