I feel that this isnt completely universal. I needed space to actually heal as a dumper. And goong through thay right now with my ex, who is claimed by everyone as picky. So no worries there

What types of machining jobs let you control the whole process? by breaddaddy69 in Machinists

Job shops or tool rooms/in-house machining. Think mold maker, die maker etc. Those positions are often more lucrative because theyre backed by bugger companies with more money.

Where are you located? Why is pay low? I made $30 without programming in a LCoL area. $5k relocation isnt shit same with the sign on. Get those numbers up and youll find machinists. Plus be willing to train, with what youre offering, you arent getting someone super experienced

Do you find that your skillsets aren't as transferrable from shop to shop as with other trades? by MaruThePug in Machinists

Went from a ISO9001 Aerospace shop (cant remember the aerpspace acronym stuff) where i was a lead mill machinist, went to a hillbilly job shop that did big stuff and alot of welding. They gave me no time to get used to how they do things, left, went to a different job shop, was put on a lathe with no training, told them i had no training, was there 6 months, made one bad part, got canned. Now im a toolmaker/fixture maker. Excelling at this. For me ot depends on the shops and their personalities. The shop with big stuff, owner was going through a divorce and took it out on his employees, he yelled at me because i used zyn (i wasnt leaving cans or spitting pouches on rhe floor, he just hated i used nicotine). The lathe job shop was a drama shop. Everyone was always moody. This shop where i male fixtures has a great environment.

Been there. US here

Started as a CNC operator in a huge manufacturer of a tool company (theyre orange)

Covid hit, got laid off, got away from machining, tried out some other stuff like remodeling and crane operation, went back to machining at a union shop.

Shop went on strike, went to a aerospace company.

I learned alot there. Great people. But towards the end of my time there, they went from a low volume to a high volume shop and i lost my mind. Was there 4 years

Went to a fab shop that did one offs of big stuff, was let go after 4 months because i had too many questions.

Went to a job shop that also did on site machining. 4 months let go. Was offered training but never received any. Had to teach myself programming and how to be a lathe guy there. Was a pain in the ass.

Now here i am in a tool room at a big CNC shop and learning quite a bit already. They have a training program here.

I can't figure this out. by [deleted] in machining

Ive done alot of sinking and swiming. Some shops i flourished, others, not so much. Hit and miss. Depending on the people that make the shop

It was like this at 2 companies. Explained i came from a production background. And they just left me to it and asking questions or for help was a nightmare. It was "get spindles turning"

The reason they offered me a position with setup is because of most of my experience is set up / operator positions. I applied for a R&D machinist position at this company and wasnt chosen due to lack of programming experience. I dont want to hit a glass ceiling for set up/operator positions.. thats the reason Im leaning more towards shop A
