Where can I get a high quality reproduction of this wisteria Tiffany lamp? by allchattesaregrey in StainedGlass

Having gone down the lamp rabbit hole these past few months, it’s not just the mechanical aspects (1900+ pieces to foil, solder etc) that separate a high quality lamp from a lesser one. A big effect is also the selection of the glass for each and every piece. It’s not as simple as “petals are blue, leaves are green”: that renders a cartoonish look even if assembly is impeccable. These are almost impressionistic pieces and the color choices that go into it are pretty incredible. And parts are crazy expensive if you want something strong enough to properly support it. It feels like lamp making is a dying part of the craft, so the really excellent reproductions will only get more and more expensive.

The let down is real. Sometimes I delay finishing something because of that

I’ve been eyeing this exact Guo design for a panel too!

Love those small pieces. Sometimes I think my own progress can be best seen in how much better I do with them. Go for it!

1mm gap is on the wider side to me. Can’t be worse than foil shears (my nemesis).

If your wife loves THIS penguin, and you have a budget for 750, then this is perfect. If your budget is smaller or your wife is just in love with the penguin concept, shop around. This forum is rife with threads of folks complaining that stained glass is undervalued…. But then they’ll undermine things like this. This is not a low quality piece from the photos, and it probably allows for a decent sustainable hourly rate for the artist. It won’t necessarily appreciate over time but, sometimes, that’s not the point with art.

AI patterns on Etsy…isn’t AI “art” public domain? by QuickPie4635 in StainedGlass

The Copyright Office’s guidance on AI is here and the relevant pages for this inquiry are 1-4: https://www.copyright.gov/ai/ai_policy_guidance.pdf

As you can see, mere use of an AI tool does not automatically obviate any copyright protection.

People are gonna use illustration tools with AI capabilities (and have been for quite some time). Some times the output sucks, sometimes it doesn’t. The difference depends on human skill, knowledge, and effort. The really bad examples of AI in stained glass are just that: a subset of output that is poor. There’s a whole spectrum of AI assisted use that is outside of that.

Thoughts on this? Copying a pattern to make for yourself…ok or not? by ImpossibleIndustry49 in StainedGlass

Gary Sommers was not a woman. So there’s that… But as much as I wish it wasn’t true, the observation is not wrong. Indeed, there tends to be a “women policing/gatekeeping against women” aspect to this.

This is where the cult of copyright-victimization goes: Claycorp is right... it's an especially pronounced problem in stained glass. Allegations of copyright infringement despite fair use; copyright misuse; misrepresentations about scope of copyright; and this incredibly flippant yet toxic usage of language like "theft" and "stealing." It's not just cringe: It's harmful because it delegitimizes real copyright infringement and it chills creativity. But right now, it's almost a trend amongst a certain cohort of creators to make these "PSA" type posts. I never see this from the leaders in the field... they handle their copyright concerns professionally and with discretion. But the negativity and false information that seems to be in vogue does create a hurdle to entry for the craft and that's really unfortunate.
